Lightning GM Steve Yzerman said there isn't any trade that's close or imminent.

"Despite what you might all read or report, very inaccurate," Yzerman said. There have been reports in the past about a trade involving Erik Karlsson going to Tampa Bay and of course so far he's remained with Ottawa. Such a trade still might happen, but this might not be an issue that's resolved in the near term. The Dallas Stars and Vegas Golden Knights have also previously been cited as possible destinations for Karlsson.

There's a report that we might actually be close to an Erik Karlsson trade involving the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Obviously, take this with a grain of salt. We've already had a report surface last week that a trade was done pending a call to the NHL and that didn't come to pass. Not much we can do but wait and see what happens next.

The Dallas Stars might still be in the mix to acquire Erik Karlsson.

The reports regarding Karlsson has been something of a roller coaster for the last 36 hours or so. On Thursday night there was a report that a deal with Tampa Bay was imminent, pending only a trade call with the NHL. That hasn't come to pass and then on Friday afternoon it was reported that there was no imminent trade. Now it's been suggested that the Dallas Stars, who were previously believed to be in the mix before the Ottawa-Tampa Bay flurry of reports, might still have a chance to get Karlsson. At this point, nothing can really surprise. Even him ultimately re-signing with the Ottawa Senators, as improbable as that has seemed, might still come to pass.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have reportedly acquired Erik Karlsson from the Ottawa Senators.

Let's start by emphasizing that this isn't official yet, but if the report is true, then it's just pending the call with the NHL office. It's also not yet known what Tampa Bay gave up. There were earlier reports that a third team, possibly the New York Rangers, were involved so details about that may emerge in the near future too. Tampa Bay was already a powerhouse and to throw a superstar like Karlsson on top of that is insane, so depending on the details and if this becomes official, the Lightning might emerge from this trade looking like an early favorite for the 2018-19 campaign.
Jul 5 - 10:28 PM

The Tampa Bay Lightning and Ottawa Senators are reportedly getting close to pulling off a trade involving Erik Karlsson.

An earlier report suggested that a third team, possibly the New York Rangers, might end up involved. That's likely important for Tampa Bay to make this whole move work from a cap perspective, especially if the Ottawa Senators insist on dumping Bobby Ryan's contract as part of any Karlsson trade. Perhaps we'll see something happen on Friday or even late tonight. Of course this could all still fall apart, so don't count on anything just yet.
Jul 5 - 9:43 PM

It sounds like there might be a trade in the works between Tampa Bay and the Ottawa Senators for Erik Karlsson.

There have been reports suggesting that Ottawa wants any trade partner to take Bobby Ryan's contract as part of a Karlsson trade and given the Lightning's cap situation, they would likely need to find a third-party willing to accept Ryan's contract in exchange for some other assets. We'll have to see what happens from here of course, but the Rangers were mentioned as a possible three-way trade option. An earlier report suggested that the Dallas Stars had emerged as frontrunners for Karlsson and the Vegas Golden Knights have also been brought up frequently as a potential landing spot, so this might not be the last twist in this story.

The Dallas Stars, Vegas Golden Knights, and Tampa Bay Lightning are reportedly among the more probable potential destinations for Erik Karlsson.

We've seen Dallas and Vegas being floated around as contenders before, but the Lightning are a somewhat rare addition to that list. Apparently Tampa Bay is looking to make a big splash after falling short in its pursuit of John Tavares. Ottawa has made Karlsson a contract offer, but it was reportedly at eight-years, $80 million, which is below market value.
Jul 4 - 4:57 PM

Lightning GM Steve Yzerman confirmed that he met with John Tavares.

Yzerman described it as "more than an informal meeting," which isn't surprising given that Tampa Bay is believed to be on Tavares' shortlist. The other clubs that Tavares is reportedly considering signing with are Toronto, San Jose, Boston, and the Islanders. If Tavares did sign with Tampa Bay, Yzerman acknowledged that they would have to "do some other things" in order to get under the cap. According to CapFriendly.com, Tampa Bay only has $5,311,220 in projected cap space for 2018-19 and Tavares' cap hit would likely be in the ballpark of $11 million.
Jun 28 - 3:41 PM

The Boston Bruins and Tampa Bay Lightning have both reportedly expressed interest in acquiring Ryan McDonagh.

That said, neither team has made a compelling offer to the Rangers yet, according to The Post. McDonagh is signed through 2018-19, so even though the Rangers are expected to be sellers at the deadline, they aren't in a position where they need to move their captain. As an aside, McDonagh is currently day-to-day with an upper-body injury.
