There's an outside chance that the Colorado Avalanche will end up with the fourth overall pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft.

The Ottawa Senators owe the Avalanche a first round pick in 2018 or 2019 as part of the Matt Duchene trade. The expectation is that the Senators will give Colorado their 2019 first rounder given that they have the fourth overall selection this year, but Ottawa doesn't have to give Colorado any notice before making its decision, so the Avalanche have to prepare for every outcome. "That’s just a personal opinion but if they do hand it to us after they’re on the clock at No. 4 then we’re ready — ready to go with that pick as well. So we got to be prepared," Avalanche director of scouting Alan Hepple said. It's hard to imagine Ottawa actually giving up the fourth overall pick, but if the Senators management believed they might get an even better pick in 2019 then the Avalanche might actually end up with the 2018 selection.
