Lightning GM Steve Yzerman said there isn't any trade that's close or imminent.

"Despite what you might all read or report, very inaccurate," Yzerman said. There have been reports in the past about a trade involving Erik Karlsson going to Tampa Bay and of course so far he's remained with Ottawa. Such a trade still might happen, but this might not be an issue that's resolved in the near term. The Dallas Stars and Vegas Golden Knights have also previously been cited as possible destinations for Karlsson.

The Dallas Stars might still be in the mix to acquire Erik Karlsson.

The reports regarding Karlsson has been something of a roller coaster for the last 36 hours or so. On Thursday night there was a report that a deal with Tampa Bay was imminent, pending only a trade call with the NHL. That hasn't come to pass and then on Friday afternoon it was reported that there was no imminent trade. Now it's been suggested that the Dallas Stars, who were previously believed to be in the mix before the Ottawa-Tampa Bay flurry of reports, might still have a chance to get Karlsson. At this point, nothing can really surprise. Even him ultimately re-signing with the Ottawa Senators, as improbable as that has seemed, might still come to pass.

It sounds like there might be a trade in the works between Tampa Bay and the Ottawa Senators for Erik Karlsson.

There have been reports suggesting that Ottawa wants any trade partner to take Bobby Ryan's contract as part of a Karlsson trade and given the Lightning's cap situation, they would likely need to find a third-party willing to accept Ryan's contract in exchange for some other assets. We'll have to see what happens from here of course, but the Rangers were mentioned as a possible three-way trade option. An earlier report suggested that the Dallas Stars had emerged as frontrunners for Karlsson and the Vegas Golden Knights have also been brought up frequently as a potential landing spot, so this might not be the last twist in this story.

The Dallas Stars, Vegas Golden Knights, and Tampa Bay Lightning are reportedly among the more probable potential destinations for Erik Karlsson.

We've seen Dallas and Vegas being floated around as contenders before, but the Lightning are a somewhat rare addition to that list. Apparently Tampa Bay is looking to make a big splash after falling short in its pursuit of John Tavares. Ottawa has made Karlsson a contract offer, but it was reportedly at eight-years, $80 million, which is below market value.

The Dallas Stars are reportedly a front-runner to acquire Erik Karlsson from the Ottawa Senators.

There has been plenty of speculation that the Senators would like to pair up Bobby Ryan as part of a Karlsson trade to get out from under Ryan's contract, but one report stated that Ryan wouldn't be involved in any trade involving Dallas. The Senators reportedly want Miro Heiskanen, who was the third overall pick in the 2017 draft, but the Stars Dallas would prefer to give up Julius Honka instead. Karlsson is one of the league's best defenseman and Dallas would be an interesting fit given that they already have a top-tier offensive defenseman in John Klingberg.

The Dallas Stars are reportedly among the teams that would pursue John Tavares if he became an unrestricted free agent.

Tavares can test the UFA waters on July 1 if he doesn't re-sign with the Islanders. Dallas would certainly be an interesting destination for him. The Stars have the cap space for it and with Spezza's $7.5 million annual cap hit coming off the books in the summer of 2019, Tavares' contract would likely fit in the long run too. Tavares would also nicely fill the void left by the fading Spezza. Adding Tavares to a team that already has Jamie Benn, Tyler Seguin, and Alexander Radulov would once again give the Stars an enviable offense. Of course, Dallas is far from the only team that would make a push for him, but they'd be an interesting destination.

Jim Montgomery has reportedly emerged as a frontrunner to be the next head coach of the New York Rangers.

Montgomery was seriously considered to be the Panthers' bench boss in the summer of 2017, but he eventually pulled himself from consideration so that he could stay with the University of Denver. Montgomery also reportedly rejected an offer from the Los Angeles Kings to serve as an assistant coach. It's not entirely clear if Montgomery has since decided that he'd be open to leaving the University of Denver, but Rangers GM Jeff Gorton is reportedly "very impressed" by Montgomery. Further complicating things is that the Dallas Stars are also believed to have interest in Montgomery for their vacant head coaching job.
