The NHLPA will reportedly declined to trigger the salary cap escalator for the 2017-18 campaign, which would result in the cap staying roughly flat compared to 2016-17.

If the NHLPA decides to raise the salary cap then unrestricted free agents will have more flexibility when it comes to destinations, but players overall will lose more money to escrow. A flat salary cap might hit the Chicago Blackhawks the hardest as they are arguably in the toughest cap situation to begin with. That being said, the Vegas Golden Knights' expansion creates an opportunity for Chicago and other franchises to potentially shift some contracts to the new team, both through the expansion draft itself and trades. It's believed that Marcus Kruger, who comes with a roughly $3.1 million cap hit, will be taken off Chicago's hands by Vegas.

Swedish defenseman Calle Rosen is reportedly drawing plenty of interest from NHL teams as an undrafted free agent.

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Chicago Blackhawks are among the front-runners to sign the 23-year-old blueliner, according to The Athletic. Rosen has played for the Vaxjo Lakers of the SHL for the past two seasons. He had 19 points in 41 matches in 2016-17.
