Anaheim Ducks GM Bob Murray had a shot at acquiring Erik Karlsson from Ottawa, but didn't want to get him with only a year left on his contract.

"You’re not going to trade for him for one year," Murray said. "You’ve got to be able to think you can sign him going forward and I just didn’t feel we would be in a position to sign him going forward. That’s the way it is right now with our hockey team." The Ducks only have a little over $6 million in cap space available and already have $69 million committed to players in 2019-20, so they're not in a good position to sign another superstar for the long term. Still, it must have hurt to see Karlsson traded to the rival San Jose Sharks instead.
