49ers GM John Lynch said Jerick McKinnon will be out of action until Week 1.

It's hardly a shock after McKinnon averted what was initially thought to be a more serious injury. With Matt Breida (shoulder) also sidelined until Week 1, all preseason reps will now fall to 2017 fourth-rounder Joe Williams, free agent acquisition Alfred Morris, Raheem Mostert, and former fifth-rounder Jeremy McNichols. McKinnon and Breida will inevitably open the season as the 49ers' top two backs, but Morris could contend for more carries with a strong showing.

Jerick McKinnon's MRI showed "just a muscle strain."

What a relief. The 49ers are already without RB Matt Breida (shoulder) until Week 1, so another blow to their backfield was almost inconceivable. The Niners gave no timetable to how long McKinnon will be out, but it's likely he doesn't participate in preseason action until fully healed, even if precautionary. Raheem Mostert received a majority of reps once McKinnon was sidelined Sunday.

Jerick McKinnon (knee) will receive an MRI Sunday.

McKinnon stayed down holding the back of his right knee following a hit Sunday. He was helped off by trainers and remained on the sidelines for the rest of practice. Although he was seen signing autographs on his way back to the locker room, the 49ers immediately announced that he'll go for an MRI on his right knee. The team is already without RB Matt Breida (shoulder) until Week 1. Stay tuned for updates.
Aug 12 - 4:09 PM

Richard Sherman (hamstring) returned to practice on a limited basis Sunday.

Sherman missed the last week of practice, including the team's preseason opener versus Dallas Thursday. Now healthy, the staff will slowly bring him back into the mix during camp. It would still be shocking to see him suit up in the Niners' next preseason game against the Steelers Thursday.
Aug 12 - 1:54 PM

49ers C/G Mike Person has emerged as the leader to start at right guard in Week 1.

Person started at right guard in Friday's preseason opener versus the Cowboys, allowing no quarterback pressures in the 40 snaps he played. Person, who hasn't missed a single day of camp, has recently emerged as a starter due to the continued absences of Jonathan Cooper (knee, active/PUP list) and Josh Garnett (knee). LT Joe Staley, LG Laken Tomlinson, C Weston Richburg, and RT Mike McGlinchey round out the rest of the 49ers' prominent line.
Aug 11 - 1:28 PM

George Kittle exited the 49ers' preseason opener with a shoulder injury.

The extent is unknown, but he's been ruled out for the rest of the game. Kittle came down hard on his shoulder while attempting a catch downfield and immediately walked over to the medical tent. A popular sleeper pick in drafts so far this season, Kittle is one of the few being drafted in the 10th-round or later that projects as an every-down tight end.
Aug 9 - 10:39 PM

Richard Sherman (hamstring) will be sidelined "at least" one week.

Sherman exited Friday's practice with hamstring tightness and will miss "at least" one week of camp. The aim is that he can return progressively, which means he'll be inactive for the Niners' first preseason game versus Dallas Thursday. Sherman will be re-evaluated next week.
Aug 5 - 1:09 PM

49ers second-round WR Dante Pettis continues to impress in camp.

The 49ers gave up the 59th and 74th picks to move up and draft Pettis No. 44 overall, so it's not shocking the team continues using him all over the field. Pettis has taken advantage of Trent Taylor's absence in camp and remains a plausible starter for the Niners in Week 1. He's a terrific late-round flier in Kyle Shanahan's up-tempo offense.
Jul 29 - 3:43 PM

Jets signed CB J.J. Wilcox.

Wilcox was ready to sign on the dotted line with the 49ers but evidently got "stage fright." He's now flying cross country to ink with the Jets. The ex-Cowboy and 2017 Steeler was cut by Pittsburgh in late April. He will fight for a role on special teams with the safety-heavy Jets.
Jun 5 - 5:08 PM

49ers waived CB Trovon Reed.

Reed was on the 90-man roster on a reserve/future deal. He is a former undrafted free agent out of Auburn who previously had a stint with the Chargers.
Jun 4 - 5:14 PM's Tom Pelissero reports it's "unlikely" the 49ers sign free agent Dez Bryant.

Bryant posted (and then deleted) on social media that he would like to play in San Francisco. Although Pelissero reports there's a mutual respect between Bryant and 49ers GM John Lynch, the Niners "love their receiver group as it is." Now on the market for well over a month, Bryant is going to have to lower his money demands.

Free agent DL Terrell McClain has a visit scheduled with the Cowboys.

McClain spent three seasons with the Cowboys before his disappointing one-year stop in Washington. He visited the Dolphins last week and met with the 49ers on Monday.
May 8 - 10:12 AM

49ers released OG Zane Beadles.

Beadles had one season remaining on the three-year, $11.75 million deal he signed in 2016. The move clears $3.5 million against the cap. A mega-bust at left guard in 2016, Beadles was no better as he shifted all along the line last season. The former second-rounder turns 32 in November.
May 7 - 3:12 PM

Free agent DL Terrell McClain is visiting the 49ers on Monday.

Cut by the Redskins last week, McClain has already met with the Dolphins, but he left without a deal. The former Cowboys disappointed during his only season in Washington.
May 7 - 11:01 AM

49ers general manager John Lynch said moving S Tarvarius Moore to cornerback is "no doubt a projection".

Niners will also move Jimmie Ward and fifth-round pick CB D.J. Reed to safety. Coaches figured Moore (6'2", 38 ½-inch vertical, 4.32 forty) profiled better at outside corner since Southern Mississippi's defense emphasized man-to-man coverage. Reed will compete with K'Waun Williams at nickel cornerback while also practicing at free safety. With Ward also practicing at corner, the 49ers' top free safety is currently projected as Adrian Colbert.
May 5 - 10:57 AM

Free agent Youngshoe Koo is practicing with the 49ers on a tryout basis.

He's one of 33 players trying out for San Francisco this weekend. Shoo began last year as the Chargers' starting kicker but flamed out quickly after missing three of his first six attempts. The Georgia Southern alum has little chance of overtaking Robbie Gould, who missed just two of his 41 field goal tries last season.
May 4 - 2:32 PM

49ers waived LB Donavin Newsom.

Newsom suffered a terrifying head and neck injury during a training camp practice last year. Taken off the field in an ambulance, Newsom spent two days in the hospital and dealt with symptoms until December. He was cleared in January and said he wants to continue his career.
Apr 30 - 11:55 AM

Patriots acquired OT Trent Brown and the No. 143 overall pick in the 2018 draft from the 49ers in exchange for the No. 95 overall pick in the 2018 draft.

Brown is a mauling right tackle with long arms who has battled conditioning issues. He's reportedly a bit out of shape as he recovers from labrum surgery on his shoulder. Brown isn't expected to be healthy until training camp. He should be a has one year left on his deal.
Apr 27 - 12:31 PM

Draft Analyst's Tony Pauline reports the 49ers are targeting Virginia Tech LB Tremaine Edmunds with the No. 9 pick.

The 49ers have a need at linebacker and "covet" the high upside three-down profile of Edmunds. They've also been connected to Alabama DB Minkah Fitzpatrick and may look to trade down for Boise State LB Leighton Vander Esch. Edmunds would give San Francisco insurance for MLB Reuben Foster but has the edge-rush skills to line up at multiple spots.
Apr 25 - 6:30 PM

49ers GM John Lynch said the team remains interested in re-signing free agent S/LB Eric Reid.

Reid has drawn minimal interest on the open market despite being 26 and in the prime of his career with a multi-position skill set and coming off a strong year. His kneeling during the national anthem is certainly playing a role. With the Niners, Reid wouldn't be guaranteed a starting job, which is the hangup.
