49ers waived QB Tom Savage.

It means C.J. Beathard (wrist) will be good to go against the Raiders on Thursday evening.
Nov 1 - 4:40 PM

49ers waived WR Victor Bolden.

CB Greg Mabin has also been cut. Boden returned from suspension earlier this month and made four appearances, catching one pass for the 49ers' banged up receiver corps.
Oct 30 - 5:11 PM

NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco reports the 49ers want to add a third quarterback to the roster.

C.J. Beathard has played well since taking over the starting job, but the 49ers would like some more insurance behind him with Nick Mullens currently filling the No. 2 spot. According to Maiocco, Tom Savage is the favorite for the job, but Matt Simms is also in the mix.
Oct 16 - 9:41 AM

The 49ers worked out free agent RBs Andre Ellington, Charcandrick West, Shane Vereen, Matt Dayes, and Jeremy McNichols this week.

Ellington has been out of the league since the end of last season with the Texans after he was cut by the Cardinals. It's somewhat surprising he was unable to find a pass-catching job after showing flashes of excellence in that area. None of the five backs were signed to the 53-man roster by San Francisco, but Dayes landed a practice-squad gig. Alfred Morris is the new lead back.
Oct 10 - 11:26 AM

The Athletic's Matt Barrows reports the 49ers also offered new Panthers S Eric Reid a one-year contract this week.

The 49ers lowballed Reid all offseason. They apparently did so one final time before the Panthers ended Reid's marathon free agency. The 49ers certainly need help in their secondary.
Sep 27 - 1:54 PM

According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, free agent Tom Savage is considered the "favorite" of veteran quarterbacks to sign with the 49ers.

The 49ers were already working out Savage, so this isn't too surprising. Garafolo and NFL Media's Jim Trotter believe a veteran quarterback won't be signed this week, however, because the 49ers need the roster spots to fill other positions. Whoever ends up signing will be C.J. Beathard's backup to start. Savage has more career interceptions than touchdowns and has a 5.7 adjusted YPA. There's no way that Savage is the best free agent quarterback available.
Sep 25 - 7:23 PM

TitansInsider.com's Terry McCormick reports free agent Matt Moore has turned down a chance to work out for the Titans.

Per McCormick, Moore has also been contacted by the 49ers. His interest level there is unclear. It's unusual for a non-retired free agent to turn down a workout. Perhaps Moore didn't like his odds of being signed or the potential money. Moore would be an upgrade on Blaine Gabbert behind Marcus Mariota.
Sep 25 - 1:54 PM

The 49ers are working out free agent Tom Savage.

The Niners are grasping at straws after losing Jimmy Garoppolo (ACL). One of the least-mobile quarterbacks in modern NFL history, Savage failed to make the Saints' 53-man roster in training camp. C.J. Beathard will be the 49ers' starter for the foreseeable future, unless of course he plays his way out of it.
Sep 24 - 3:52 PM

ESPN's Rich Cimini reports the Jets have "some interest" in Josh Gordon.

Earlier, Pro Football Talk passed along a report that the 49ers have interest in Gordon, as well. Cimini calls the Jets' interest merely doing their "due diligence," but it's notable nonetheless. In 2014, reports had the 49ers potentially trading RB Kendall Hunter and a second-round pick to Cleveland for Gordon, but owner Jimmy Haslam nixed the deal. Gordon should resurface with a team this coming week. A clear-cut favorite has yet to emerge.
Sep 16 - 5:33 PM

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Josh Gordon is keeping "his eye on" the 49ers and Cowboys.

Rapoport adds that Gordon's impending release is not related to any substance abuse violation and was mostly the result of a hamstring injury he suffered during a recent photo shoot. The Niners and Cowboys would both be logical fits as San Francisco is currently without deep threat Marquise Goodwin (quad) while Dallas is currently trotting out a receiving corps of Allen Hurns, Cole Beasley and Deonte Thompson. Gordon is sure to attract interest, though teams need to know that he's healthy before taking a chance on him.
Sep 16 - 9:25 AM

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the 49ers are working out DEs Erik Walden and Hau'oli Kikaha.

Walden signed with the Seahawks in August, but he was recently released with an injury settlement. Kikaha was waived by the Saints at final cuts.
Sep 10 - 11:23 AM

Colts signed RB Jeremy McNichols to their practice squad.

McNichols was part of the 49ers' roster cuts over the weekend after managing a 23-73-3.2-2 rushing line this preseason. McNichols was an interesting draft prospect last year but failed to make the Bucs after being a fifth-rounder. The Colts, on paper, are a solid landing spot for McNichols.
Sep 3 - 7:33 PM

49ers waived/released RB Jeremy McNichols, DE Jeremiah Attaochu, WR Aaron Burbridge, OG Jonathan Cooper, WR Steven Dunbar, TE Ross Dwelley, S Antone Exum, TE Cole Hikutini, FB Malcolm Johnson, OL Andrew Lauderdale, DB Dexter McCoil, CB Tarvarus McFadden, CB Emmanuel Moseley, QB Nick Mullens, DB Tyvis Powell, DL Niles Scott, OL Coleman Shelton, LB Pita Taumoepenu, LB Korey Toomer, OL Najee Toran, and RB Jeff Wilson.

There are no surprises. McNichols received some decent run in the preseason but saw his roster chances wash away when the Niners signed Alfred Morris.
Sep 1 - 4:10 PM

49ers released OG Jonathan Cooper.

It's probably not a good sign for your career when you get beat out by Mike Person for the starting job. The Niners employ a bevy of first-round busts at guard, but Cooper couldn't make the cut. He was the No. 7 overall pick in the disastrous 2013 draft by the Cardinals. Cooper is nearing the end. The 49ers gave him a $2 million signing bonus in March, which the team will now eat.
Sep 1 - 1:13 PM

The 49ers are exploring the possibility of trading for Raiders DE Khalil Mack.

La Canfora also lists the Jets, Bills, Colts, Packers, Browns, and Bears among teams inquiring about Mack. The Raiders are reportedly asking for two first-round picks in return for their perennial All-World holdout, though numerous Oakland beat writers have suggested Mack could be had for a first-round pick and standout player combo. Currently gauging and listening to offers, the Raiders appear to be closer to dealing Mack than paying him.
Sep 1 - 1:12 AM

49ers released WR Aldrick Robinson.

Famously nicknamed "Lord" Aldrick by ex-Rotoworlder Adam Levitan, Robinson was a perennial preseason hero in Washington and Atlanta before failing to make this year's final cut in San Francisco. Robinson offers enough deep speed that he could latch on elsewhere, but he's really only had any kind of success with Kyle Shanahan. He got beaten out by Richie James and Kendrick Bourne.
Aug 31 - 4:27 PM

49ers released P Jeff Locke.

It's the second straight year Locke has failed to make a Week 1 roster. Bradley Pinion will open the season as the 49ers' punter.
Aug 31 - 4:05 PM

49ers waived RB Joe Williams.

Williams struggled before going on IR with an ankle injury last summer and missed time with a broken rib earlier this month, though he's reportedly healthy now. Coach Kyle Shanahan was a big believer in Williams coming out of Utah but so far he hasn't measured up in the pros. The decision to move on from Williams could be a sign that Jerick McKinnon (calf) and Matt Breida (shoulder) are nearing full strength.
Aug 31 - 3:40 PM

Lions acquired LB Eli Harold from the 49ers in exchange for a conditional seventh-round pick.

Harold started 10 games for the Niners last year but was graded by Pro Football Focus as one of the worst outside linebackers in the league. His absence now makes Dekoda Watson the likely starter opposite WLB Malcolm Smith in the 49ers' defense. Harold will compete for a roster spot in Detroit.
Aug 23 - 10:40 AM

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said the team still has interest in re-signing free agent S Eric Reid.

However, Shanahan would only consider him as a backup to Jaquiski Tartt at strong safety. Shanahan imagines that role wouldn't be enough to pique Reid's interest. The 26-year-old recently filed a grievance against the NFL, claiming teams were avoiding him in free agency because he protested the national anthem. The Titans showed some interest in Reid earlier this summer, but nothing came of it.
