Free agent CB Vontae Davis is meeting with the 49ers Tuesday.

He met with the Bills and Browns last week. Davis struggled while dealing with injuries each of the last two seasons, but he is only 30 (in May) and was a Pro Bowler in 2015. He would be a quality flier for the 49ers.

According to NFL draft insider Tony Pauline, the 49ers are one of several teams high on Oklahoma State WR Marcell Ateman.

The Niners struggled in the red zone last season, and Ateman (6'4/220) would add size in scoring position. Per Pauline, Ateman is likely to improve his stock at the Scouting Combine with a forty time in the 4.45 range and 40-plus-inch vertical after training with ex-Olympian Michael Johnson before the draft.

The 49ers have interest in free agent CB David Amerson.

Amerson has already visited the Texans and Bears, and reports indicate he has three more visits set up for the rest of the week. The 49ers struggled at corner all last season. 26-year-old Amerson is worth a flier on a cheap salary.

Seahawks hired Ken Norton as defensive coordinator.

Norton coached the Seahawks' linebackers from 2010-2014 and is a "comfortable" hire, reuniting with Pete Carroll. He signed a deal on January 8 to work as the 49ers' assistant head coach/linebackers, but Norton can break that contract for a higher-up position. Norton coordinated abominable defenses in Oakland the past two years. After his firing this past season, the Raiders' defense played better down the stretch under John Pagano. Both of Seattle's coordinator hires -- including OC Brian Schottenheimer -- have been thoroughly uninspiring.

49ers released DE Datone Jones.

Because the trade deadline has passed, he will be subject to waivers. The 2013 first-round pick lasted three games with the 49ers, his third team this season. Jones was likely cut to make room for Tank Carradine (ankle), who is eligible to return from injured reserve.

Chiefs signed CB Will Redmond to the practice squad.

It's the first we've heard of the 2016 third-round bust after he was let go by the 49ers at final cuts. He missed his entire rookie year as he recovered from a torn ACL, and evidently still wasn't healthy as of September. The cornerback-needy Chiefs will see if they can capture taxi squad lightning in a bottle.

Patriots signed QB Brian Hoyer, formerly of the 49ers, to a three-year contract.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Hoyer was also being courted by the Packers. He instead chooses to go back to New England where it all began as an UDFA out of Michigan State. Hoyer will slide in as Tom Brady's backup, replacing Jimmy Garoppolo, who was traded to the Niners on Monday.

Jets acquired CB Rashard Robinson from the 49ers in exchange for a 2018 fifth-round pick.

The 2016 fourth-rounder had started 7-of-8 games for the 49ers this season, but struggled mightily, grading out as one of Pro Football Focus' worst cornerbacks. He was benched for Week 8. The 49ers are stockpiling picks, while the Jets are trying to add some depth to one of the league's most surprising teams. Robinson could push Darryl Roberts for No. 3 duties in the Big Apple. Buster Skrine has also been struggling.

49ers released QB Brian Hoyer.

The 49ers gave Hoyer $10 million guaranteed in March to be their starter this season, but he was benched after going 0-6 and replaced by rookie C.J. Beathard, who has been just as bad. On Monday, the Niners swung a blockbuster for Jimmy Garoppolo, making Hoyer useless. Hoyer is a decent spot starter but belongs as a backup. He could replace Garoppolo in New England as the No. 2 to Tom Brady. Hoyer started his career with the Pats, who now don't have a backup to Brady. Hoyer will want to go somewhere he could start, but he may not find it.

49ers released CB Leon Hall.

Well that was quick. Hall lasted just nine days with the Niners before getting his walking papers. The 33-year-old will hope to latch on as a depth option elsewhere.

Raiders signed ILB Navorro Bowman, formerly of the 49ers, to a one-year, $3 million contract.

He never even made it to Dallas. Still a useful run defender, Bowman will add toughness to a weak Oakland inside linebacker corps. He is a liability in pass coverage, however, and had been losing passing-down snaps before the 49ers released him. The Raiders play on Thursday Night Football this week, but we wouldn't be surprised to see Bowman log significant snaps right away.

49ers released ILB NaVorro Bowman.

We knew something was brewing when a report surfaced the 49ers were shopping Bowman. His contract made him impossible to trade, so the Niners are swallowing his entire $6.75 million salary and $4.7 million in dead money next year, a sign they obviously feel Bowman is over the hill. A four-time All-Pro selection, Bowman shouldn't take long to resurface.

Free agent DT Ahtyba Rubin worked out for the 49ers.

It's the second team Rubin has been linked to after visiting Buffalo last week. The 49ers also met with free agents Kendall Langford, Jaye Howard and Tony McDaniel.
Wed, Sep 13, 2017 06:01:00 PM

Jets signed WR Jeremy Kerley, formerly of the 49ers, to a one-year contract.

Kerley will immediately slide into the slot for the woefully-undermanned Jets. Kerley had a solid 2016 in San Francisco, catching 64 passes for 667 yards and three touchdowns on 115 targets. It's not inconceivable he ends up the Jets' most-targeted pass catcher. Even in an offense that threatens to be historically bad, Kerley is on the PPR radar.

Packers signed DE Quinton Dial, formerly of the 49ers.

Dial never rose above rotational status in San Francisco, but was decent as a situational player. Dial has only 4.5 career sacks, but occupies space with his 6-foot-5 frame, and is sturdy against the run.

Free agent CB Leon Hall is working out for the 49ers on Tuesday.

Hall also worked out for the 49ers in May. At least publicly, no other team has come calling. The 33 year old played 455 decent snaps for the Giants in 2016.

Vikings claimed TE Blake Bell off waivers from the 49ers.

A fourth-round pick in 2015, Bell never amounted to anything in San Francisco. He has great size at 6'6/252 but is a limited athlete and is already 26.

49ers released DT Sen'Derrick Marks, NT Quinton Dial and CB Asa Jackson; waived TE Blake Bell, LB Austin Calitro, WR DeAndre Carter, OL JP Flynn, TE Cole Hikutini, QB Nick Mullens, DL Noble Nwachukwu, WR DeAndre Smelter and OL Darrell Williams Jr.

Marks lasted just over a week in San Francisco. The Niners also parted ways with slot receiver Jeremy Kerley on Saturday.

49ers released WR Jeremy Kerley.

The slot receiver led San Francisco in both receiving yards (667) and catches (64) last year but apparently the team's coaching staff preferred fifth-round rookie Trent Taylor. Regardless of where he lands, it's unlikely Kerley will carry any fantasy relevance.
Sat, Sep 2, 2017 02:34:00 PM

49ers released DE Quinton Dial.

Dial was given a three-year extension which included a $3.3 million signing bonus last February, but he is no longer a fit with the new coaching staff. He should latch on somewhere else.
