The Chiefs will not re-sign ILB Derrick Johnson when his contract voids on the first day of the new league year, letting him become a free agent.

Johnson was technically under contract for 2018 but it's a voidable year. The No. 15 overall pick of the 2005 draft, Johnson has spent his entire 13-year career in Kansas City, recently enduring a pair of Achilles' tears. Now 35, Johnson still managed to play 845 snaps in 2017. He was an every-down player earlier in the year before taking on more of a 66 percent role down the stretch. Johnson will look for a part time/leadership role on the open market.

Chiefs released CB Darrelle Revis.

With Revis due an $8.8 million roster bonus in March, this was an expected move. Revis did not embarrass himself after surprisingly signing a two-year contract in November, helping to stabilize the back end of a defense that had been in free-fall. Going on 33, Revis said last month that he was interested in playing in 2018. The Chiefs' surprise interest appears to have reinvigorated a career even Revis seemed to believe was over.

The Rams will play the Chiefs in a regular season game in Mexico City in 2018.

Commissioner Roger Goodell made the announcement at his Super Bowl press conference Wednesday. It will be counted as a Rams home game as they continue to wait for their new stadium to be built in Inglewood. The Raiders-Texans and Patriots-Raiders games in Mexico City the past two seasons were smashing hits. The game is usually good for both offenses, with Mexico City at a higher altitude than Denver, therefore gassing defensive players by the second half.

Redskins acquired QB Alex Smith from the Chiefs in exchange for undisclosed compensation.

Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Chiefs are getting back "picks and a player." No trades can become official until the first day of the new league year on March 14, but the trade is agreed upon, saving the Chiefs $17 million under the salary cap. The blockbuster trade will ensure Kirk Cousins hits free agency, where he'll likely become the NFL's highest-paid player. It also locks in Patrick Mahomes as the Chiefs' 2018 starting quarterback. In 2017, Smith set career highs in touchdown-to-interception ratio (26:5) and yards per attempt (8.0). He turns 34 in May, so a quarterback will stay in play for the Redskins at the No. 13 overall pick.

Chiefs assistant head coach Brad Childress is retiring.

The ex-Vikings head coach spent the past five years as one of Andy Reid's top assistants in Kansas City. Reid must now replace both "Chilly" and OC Matt Nagy, who has accepted the Bears' head-coaching position. Coaching football since 1978, Childress has been in the NFL since 1999. He was a Brett Favre mistake away from taking the 2009 Vikings to Super Bowl XLIV.

Bears hired ex-Chiefs OC Matt Nagy as head coach.

The Chicago Sun-Times' Adam Jahns reports GM Ryan Pace interviewed Nagy on Sunday and has decided he is the guy to replace John Fox, who was fired after the season. The Chiefs' offense took off after Nagy was given play-calling duties late in the season, and the coach was reportedly high on Mitchell Trubisky heading into last year's draft, a fact which certainly played a role in this hiring. The future of Bears DC Vic Fangio, who interviewed for the lead job, remains up in the air, but Chicago hiring an offensive mind at head coach could allow them to keep the talented defensive coordinator.

Bears signed K Cairo Santos, formerly of the Chiefs.

Chicago is moving on from Connor Barth, who missed a game-tying field goal with just three seconds left in the loss to the Lions on Sunday. Santos was waived/injured by the Chiefs in September because of a groin injury, but he is apparently back to full health. Santos has connected on 84.8 percent of his career kicks through four seasons and 96.2 percent of his extra point attempts.

Chiefs released DT Roy Miller.

Miller was recently arrested on a domestic battery charge. He appeared in seven games for Kansas City, operating as a lightly-used rotational run stopper. Miller was replaced on the Chiefs' 53-man roster by DL Cam Thomas.

Chiefs released RB C.J. Spiller.

The move makes room for RB Akeem Hunt, who the Chiefs apparently like more on special teams. Spiller has now been released three times by the Chiefs in the last two weeks.

Free agent S Aaron Williams worked out for the Chiefs on Tuesday.

Released by the Bills in March, Williams has battled numerous neck problems. His career had been in doubt at one point. Williams is a 27-year-old former second-rounder. He'd be depth in KC after Eric Berry's torn Achilles'.

Chiefs released RB C.J Spiller.

OL Jordan Devey is also being let go. In the span of five days, Spiller has been cut by the Chiefs, re-signed and released for a second time. Charcandrick West will back up Kareem Hunt in Thursday night's opener at Foxboro.

Jones always shows up in shorts and t-shirts, but has never made an impact during the regular season. He turned 25 earlier this month.

Seahawks acquired OT Isaiah Battle from the Chiefs.

Selected in the fifth-round of the 2015 supplemental draft by the Rams, Battle has yet to be active for a regular season game. He is just a dart throw for the always offensive-line needy Seahawks.

Chiefs released RB C.J. Spiller.

Spiller couldn't crack the roster even with lead back Spencer Ware (knee) out for the season. The 30-year-old managed 46 yards on 11 preseason carries. With Spiller out, Charcandrick West will serve as the main backup to workhorse Kareem Hunt.

Chiefs released OG Andrew Tiller.

Tiller made seven starts for the Chiefs last season and received strong marks from Pro Football Focus for his run blocking. He should resurface.

Titans acquired DE David King from the Chiefs in exchange for a conditional 2018 seventh-round pick.

A 2013 seventh-round pick of the Eagles, King has made just two career tackles in the NFL. He will add depth to the Titans' 3-4 defensive end rotation.

Chiefs released G/T Jah Reid.

Scooped up before Week 1 2015, Reid surprisingly landed a three-year extension after a sub-par year at right tackle. He couldn't win a starting job last season, and evidently didn't show enough in camp to stick around as a swing lineman. The move clears $2.012 million in cap space for a team whose cap problems led to the spring release of Jeremy Maclin.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Saints and Chiefs are two teams expected to have "strong interest" in free agent CB Joe Haden.

Haden, 28, will be a popular player over the next 24 hours. Agent Drew Rosenhaus expects his client to have a new home by Thursday afternoon. In addition to the Saints and Chiefs, the Cowboys, Colts, Giants, and Steelers have also been talked about as possible fits. The Chiefs badly need an upgrade on Phillip Gaines on the outside opposite All-Pro CB Marcus Peters.
Wed, Aug 30, 2017 09:29:00 AM

Chiefs released ILB Josh Mauga.

Mauga was a starter in 2014-15, but missed all of 2016 with a shoulder injury. He languished on the open market until July, and didn't show enough in the first five weeks of camp to earn a roster spot. Now on the wrong side of 30, Mauga's career could be winding down.

Former Chiefs and Chargers CB Brandon Flowers is retiring after nine seasons in the NFL.

A second-round pick in 2008, Flowers spent the first six seasons of his career with the Chiefs before signing on with the Chargers for the final three. Flowers has a lengthy concussion history that likely is playing a large role in this decision. Flowers, 31, met with the Cardinals last month and also spoke with the Steelers and Patriots. Flowers went to one Pro Bowl and picked off 21 passes.
