Watford's season could not have gotten off to a better start, as they won their first game away from Vicarage Road with a 1-3 win at Burnley.

If you are looking for a surprise story this season, the Hornets are surely making an early case. After struggling to stay up last season, failing to score on the road for months, they got off the mark inside of three minutes today, when Andre Gray finished a volley after playing a nifty 1-2 with Troy Deeney on the break. Burnley would level minutes later, and the two sides were playing end-to-end. Watford eventually rose above in the second half, with Deeney finding the net himself, finishing a nice pass from Abdoulaye Doucoure three minutes after the restart. Will Hughes sealed the result with a nice long strike minutes later after picking off a loose pass. Watford host Palace next.

Watford glided through the first weekend of the season thanks to a 2-0 win over Brighton.

Javi Gracia's men will be thanking former Juventus midfielder Roberto Pereyra for both of their goals. The first was a superb volley from a Jose Holebas corner whilst the second was a fine curling finish from a tight angle in the second half. Neither side featured many of their new recruits but it was the Hornets who came put the traps today. Brighton didn't even muster a shot on Ben Foster's goal.

Gerard Deulofeu will be counted on for a lot of heavy lifting in the Watford attack but it won't happen in Week 1 as the former Barcelona man will miss out due to a minor knock.

With the departure of Richarlison and the seeming regression of Troy Deeney Watford don't have a lot of attacking options. The arrival of Gerard Deulofeu last season was supposed to boost the attack and heading into this season it is hard to see anyone else who is likely to be the featured player. With Deulofeu out for Week 1 it is hard to see where the goals might come from for the Hornets when Brighton visit Vicarage Road.

Abdoulaye Doucoure has come through off-season appendix surgery and is fit again but Javi Garcia wouldn't be specific about the role the midfielder would play on opening weekend.

Doucoure was one of the surprise packages of last season producing consistent results from midfield despite being about as unheralded as a player can be coming into the Premier League. His injury status and the overall negativity over Watford's prospects have led to Doucoure going undrafted in many fantasy leagues and not considered in salary cap. Those are probably wise decisions for Week 1 but, especially in draft, Doucoure could surprise a second time once he regains his starting role, presumably in Week 2 at the latest.

Watford have announced the departure of Tommy Hoban to Aberdeen on a season-long loan.

After a lost season spent recovering from an ACL tear, Tommie Hoban has been loaned to Scottish Premier League side Aberdeen for the 2018-2019 season. Watford will hope that Hoban can use the loan spell to return to match sharpness with an eye toward either contributing to Watford in the 2019-2020 season or building up his transfer value for a move next summer.

Watford have sold Nordin Amrabat to Riyadh-based club Al-Nassr in advance of the start of the 2018-19 season.

The sale of Amrabat is at least a little surprising given his spells of effectiveness for the Hornets and the departure of Richarlison for Goodison Park. Perhaps the arrival of Gerard Deulofeu was enough to push Morocco international out the door due to a lack of likely playing time.

Tom Cleverley will miss the opening weeks of the new season after undergoing surgery.

A decision was taken for the Watford midfielder to go under the knife to cure a long-standing Achilles problem. Cleverley joined the Hornets on a 5-year deal following a successful loan-spell but endured a frustrating 2017/18 due to ongoing hamstring problems which effectively ended his season in January. It was hoped that the break would resolve the issue but following his return, the problem once again flared-up meaning Watford will be without the services of Cleverley until September at the earliest. "This is something I’ve put up with during my career so it’s good to get it sorted," he said. "I had been used to playing with pain in my ankle. Now that’s going to be a thing of the past, I’ll be fit and raring to win my place back once I’ve finished my rehab." Javi Gracia could take a punt on former Sunderland midfielder Jack Rodwell who is currently on trial at the club with Nathaniel Chalobah still working his way back to full fitness.

Ben Foster has returned to Watford on a permanent transfer after being relegated with West Bromwich Albion last season.

Heurelho Gomes was never quite good enough for the Premier League at Spurs and despite some glimmers of hope while Marco Silva was pushing the Hornets to great things, the Brazilian didn't make the grade at Watford either. With the arrival of Ben Foster, Gomes either becomes a reserve or the club will find another place for him either somewhere else in the Pozo soccer empire or at another club outside the "family". Look for Foster to be a solid, but not spectacular goalkeeper who will pick up more than his share of saves but probably not enough to overcome his relative lack of clean sheets.

Nordin Amrabat was a surprise starter on Wednesday as Morocco went in search of their first Group B win against European champions Portugal.

The Watford winger fell heavily to the ground [versus Iran] banging his head which appeared to render him unconscious. The incident attracted the attention of the worlds media following the odd-method of treatment administered by the Moroccan medical team which involved spraying water in the face of Amrabat and slapping him around the cheeks. He later spent a night in hospital after team doctor - Abderrazak Hifti – revealed: "I asked him five questions and he could only answer one, I saw clear symptoms of cerebral concussion." Their actions prompted FIFA to write a strong letter to the football federation expressing their ‘shock’ at the handling of the situation but they deny any wrongdoing: "We never make a decision that would put a player’s health at risk." FIFA concussion protocol clearly states that players must wait a minimum of six days before a return to competitive play, so just how Amrabat was declared fit is cause for concern.

After a promising half-season at Vicarage Road, Gerard Deulofeu has made his move to the Hornets permanent with a €13m fee going back to Barcelona.

Gerard Deulofeu only played 7 Premier League matches for Watford last season and only managed a single goal. Despite the uninspiring statistics it was clear watching him that he was the sort of spark that the Hornets needed to bolster an attack that flagged badly after a hot start led by Richarlison. If the Hornets can keep Richarlison, keep Will Hughes healthy (admittedly, a huge if), and find a reliable center forward they could have the makings of a strong attack heading into next season. Look for Deulofeu to continue to deliver a high volume of crosses and shots that don't hit with great regularity but at least keep pressure on the opposing defense.

Watford officially announced the signing of Barcelona winger Gerard Deulofeu to a five-year contract on Monday.

The Spaniard spent part of last season on loan with the Hornets where he scored one goal in seven games, but has made the loan permanent in a £11.5 million move that could become £15 million with add ons. "We are very pleased to welcome Gerard back to Vicarage Road and thank FC Barcelona for their part in concluding this deal," said Watford Chairman & CEO Scott Duxbury. "Our ambition to succeed and grow in the Premier League remains as strong as ever."

Nathan Chalobah has missed nearly the entire season due to a knee injury but could play some part against Manchester United on Sunday as his recovery continues.

The former Chelsea youth product came into the season with high hopes based on the opportunity to play some serious minutes in the top flight out from under the oppressive depth chart at Chelsea. He showed some signs of quality early before a September knee injury derailed what was supposed to be a breakout season. Even if he only appears as a substitute on the final day of the season it will be a big move back toward the starting line-up next season at Watford.

Roberto Pereyra scored in the 2nd minute and added an assist as Watford beat Newcastle in Week 37 action

The former Juventus man wasn't a sure thing to participate but not only did he take part but turned in the starting performance. Neither team had a great deal to play for but the Hornets came out strong at home with two first half goals. The let Newcastle pull one back in the second half but ended up sending their fans home happy.

Watford midfielder Roberto Pereyra faces a late fitness test ahead of the Week 37 visit of Newcastle.

With more than half of the Premier League sides having two matches during Match Week 37, Watford players, who only have a single match this match week, were already on depressed fantasy value. With news coming down that Pereyra is not certain to be healthy it reduces the former Juventus man's fantasy value to nearly nil for Match Week 37.

Watford's struggles away from home only continued to plague the club with a 2-0 loss to Spurs adding to a dubious streak.

The Hornets have now gone winless in their last seven Premier League games, but their road woes truly show the worst of the side with Javi Gracia yet to win away from home as the club has now gone more than 630 minutes without a goal on the road. Watford actually recorded more shots on target than their hosts, but were wasteful in front of goal. Their best chances came just before the half when Hugo Lloris denied them twice, with Richarlison nearly adding his name to the scoring sheet. With the loss, Watford only sits six points above Southampton, who has a game in hand, in the bottom three.
