Vikings OC John DeFilippo will have a role in choosing the team's quarterback in 2018.
"I'm going to leave no stone unturned," said DeFilippo at his introductory press conference. "It's going to be a collaborative effort, something we all agree on." GM Rick Spielman will have the final say on who the Vikings sign in free agency, but DeFilippo should be involved as well. The Vikings are expected to be players for Kirk Cousins, who will be the most coveted quarterback on the market. Feb 9 - 3:38 PM

Vikings hired Eagles QBs coach John DeFilippo as offensive coordinator.

It's a coup for the Vikings, as DeFilippo had reportedly been "leaning toward" staying in Philadelphia after being passed over for the Bears and Cardinals' head-coaching vacancies. On the rise since a well-regarded showing as the Browns' offensive coordinator in 2015, DeFilippo has earned raves for his work with Carson Wentz. DeFilippo is inheriting excellent talent at running back and receiver, but doesn't yet know which quarterback he will be coaching in 2018. It stands to reason DeFilippo will employ some of the play-calling optimization techniques he learned under Doug Pederson in Philly.

The Vikings will interview Eagles QBs coach John DeFilippo for their offensive coordinator vacancy on Thursday.

The Vikings have been strongly connected to DeFilippo but had to wait until after the Super Bowl to interview him. His interest level could take a hit if the Colts hire Frank Reich as head coach, which would leave DeFilippo as the Eagles' top in-house option at coordinator. The Vikings have also been linked to ex-Seahawks OC Darrell Bevell, Texans QB coach Sean Ryan, and Saints TE coach Dan Campbell for their offensive coordinator job.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune confirms the Vikings hope to interview Eagles QBs coach John DeFilippo for their offensive coordinator vacancy.

However, the paper also reports that DeFilippo is "leaning toward staying in Philadelphia." The Eagles cannot interview DeFilippo until after Sunday's Super Bowl. DeFilippo has been a rising coaching star for a few years, and has earned raves for his work with Carson Wentz.
Feb 1 - 4:44 PM

The Vikings could interview Eagles QB coach John DeFilippo for their offensive coordinator job next week.

DeFilippo had some head-coach interest this offseason, interviewing with Arizona and Chicago. He's highly regarded for his work with Carson Wentz and would be a solid fit as Pat Shurmur's replacement. The Vikings have also met with ex-Seahawks OC Darrell Bevell, Texans QB coach Sean Ryan, and Saints TE coach Dan Campbell.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports Eagles QBs coach John DeFilippo is expected to get a second interview for the Cardinals' head coaching vacancy.

DeFilippo is also thought to be Panthers DC Steve Wilks' top choice for an offensive coordinator if he lands a lead job, but DeFilippo remains in the running in Arizona himself. DeFilippo did surprisingly well as the Browns' coordinator in 2015 and has played a large role in Carson Wentz's development. It is only a matter of time until he lands a head coaching job.
Jan 16 - 11:30 AM

NFL.com's Mike Garofolo reports the Bears will interview Eagles QBs coach John DeFilippo for their head-coaching vacancy.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports DeFilippo will interview with the Cardinals, as well. Still only 39, DeFilippo has been a rising star in coaching circles since he did a surprisingly good job as Cleveland's coordinator in 2015. He also drew plaudits as Raiders QBs coach from 2012-14. His 2017 work with Carson Wentz has only enhanced his reputation. For a team in Chicago that desperately needs "the next Sean McVay," DeFilippo is a wise phone call to make.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Eagles have denied the Jets' request to interview QBs coach John DeFilippo for their offensive coordinator vacancy.

That's the Eagles' right, but it's still poor form. Despite the ability to block such job hopping, teams usually grant position coaches the ability to seek coordinating work. DeFilippo did an excellent job with the 2015 Browns. He'll be a coordinator again sooner or later.

ESPN's Adam Caplan reports the Jets have requested permission to interview Eagles QBs coach John DeFilippo for their offensive coordinator vacancy.

DeFilippo spent one year coordinating the Browns' offense in 2015, a year which saw Josh McCown put up a 93.3 quarterback rating while throwing 12 touchdowns to just four interceptions in eight starts. DeFilippo also earned praise for his handling of Derek Carr his rookie season. This would be a good hire for the Jets, but the Eagles are not required to grant permission.

NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reports the Jets are interested in Eagles QBs coach John DeFilippo for their offensive coordinator vacancy.

A sprightly 38 by coaching standards, DeFilippo had a well-regarded year as Derek Carr's QBs coach in 2014 before overseeing a number of career years for the otherwise dispiriting 2015 Cleveland Browns. He would be an excellent hire for Gang Green, but the Eagles don't have to grant permission to interview.

Eagles hired ex-Browns OC John DeFilippo as QBs coach.

DeFilippo was a semi-popular man the past couple weeks; he interviewed for the 49ers' head-coaching vacancy and the Rams' OC job before linking up with Doug Pederson in Philadelphia. DeFilippo was Derek Carr's QBs coach as a rookie before his one-year stint as the Browns' play-caller. Despite the Browns' tough season, "Flip" managed career years out of Gary Barnidge and Travis Benjamin, got more out of Johnny Manziel, and turned Josh McCown back into a successful bridge quarterback. Free agent Sam Bradford would be wise to re-sign in Philly.

Browns released OC John DeFilippo.

Ownership reportedly wanted to retain DeFilippo, but there was not a place for him on the staff with new coach Hue Jackson deciding against having an offensive coordinator. An up-and-comer, DeFilippo has already interviewed with the Rams and 49ers. He will not be out of work long.

Browns OC John DeFilippo is interviewing with the Rams on Tuesday.

According to the Sacramento Bee, DeFilippo could also be in the running for the 49ers' coordinator position if Tom Coughlin is hired. The Browns are trying to keep DeFilippo in-house as they search for a new coach, but he could be lured away before Mike Pettine's replacement is identified.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer's Mary Kay Cabot reports the Browns want to retain OC John DeFilippo on the new coaching staff.

Cleveland has also asked DBs coach Jeff Hafley, assistant DBs coach Aaron Glenn and QBs coach Kevin O'Connell to stay if the new coach wants them. DeFilippo was a good hire last season, and he has already garnered interest this cycle. DeFilippo interviewed for the Rams' open coordinator spot, and he met with the 49ers regarding their head-coaching vacancy. Cleveland would do well to keep the up-and-comer on staff under a new coach.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the 49ers are meeting with Browns OC John DeFilippo Friday.

Rapoport did not call the meeting an interview, instead saying it was "more of an informational meeting." Sounds an awful lot like an interview. Either way, DeFilippo is a well-regarded coach who should have plenty of options to coordinate another offense next season once he escapes the Factory of Sadness, but he would not be a splashy hire for the 49ers' head-coaching vacancy. DeFilippo has just one year of coordinator experience.
