Musgrove's season ended prematurely due to the injury and the decision was eventually made to have an operation. He's expected to need six weeks of rehab time, with the Pirates saying the right-hander "will be on or close to a regular schedule for 2019 spring training." Oct 19 - 5:04 PM

Joe Musgrove won't pitch again in 2018 due to right side abdominal discomfort, the team announced Saturday.

Musgrove was recently diagnosed with a stress reaction on the front of his pelvic bone and an abdominal wall muscle strain, MLB.com's Adam Berry reported on Twitter, and so the 25-year-old's year comes to an abrupt end. Musgrove also began the year on the sidelines but pitched relatively well in between, going 6-9 with a 4.06 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 100/23 K/BB ratio across 19 starts. Musgrove should be on fantasy radars heading into the 2019 season, assuming the injury doesn't linger into next spring.
Sep 22 - 9:04 PM

Joe Musgrove was charged with five earned runs over six innings Monday in a no-decision versus the Royals.

Pittsburgh's offense and bullpen bailed him out in this one as the Pirates rallied for a 7-6 walk-off victory. Musgrove gave up eight hits but didn't walk a batter and struck out four. The 25-year-old right-hander will bring a 4.06 ERA and 1.18 WHIP into his next start at home against the Brewers.
Sep 17 - 10:44 PM

Joe Musgrove fanned eight over six innings but was charged with four runs in a loss to St. Louis on Tuesday.

Musgrove settled in after giving up a two-run double to Marcell Ozuna in the first inning, retiring the next 14 batters he faced. However, he ran into more trouble in the sixth, loading the bases with nobody out before giving up runs on a wild pitch and sacrifice fly. He wound up permitting just six baserunners on the night, but the Cardinals did a good job of cashing them in. Musgrove goes up against the Royals at home next.
Sep 12 - 12:12 AM

Joe Musgrove fanned eight while allowing two runs over 6 1/3 innings in the Pirates’ 7-3 victory over the Reds on Tuesday.

Musgrove cruised through the first sixth innings, yielding just two singles. He then served up a one-out homer to Scooter Gennett in the seventh before allowing back-to-back singles and a walk to earn the hook. One of the runners he left on the bases came around to score. While his night ended on a sour note, it was a nice bounce-back outing after Musgrove struggled in his last two outings. He’ll get the Cardinals and Brewers on the road next week.
Sep 4 - 10:29 PM

Joe Musgrove allowed five runs on seven hits over six innings in a loss to the Cardinals on Thursday.

Musgrove was shaky but flawless through two innings, giving up a couple of loud outs, but the Cards got to him in the third when the eighth-place hitter, Harrison Bader, and pitcher John Gant hit back-to-back solo homers. Things continued to get worse from there, with the Cards plating another run in the fourth and two more in the fifth. On the plus side, the right-hander finished strong, registering two strikeouts in a scoreless sixth inning to give him seven punchouts on the night. Musgrove is an intriguing talent who seems to be bitten by the big inning too often. He'll carry a 3.80 ERA into Tuesday's start against the Reds.
Aug 30 - 11:02 PM

Joe Musgrove let in four runs in four innings and did not garner a decision against the Brewers in a game that lasted 15 innings on Friday.

He teed up two-run homers to Christian Yelich and Mike Moustakas in the first inning. He allowed six hits and no walks while fanning four in the short start. Musgrove has been solid in his first season with the Pirates after coming over from the Astros in the Gerrit Cole swap. He is 5-7 with a 3.56 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in 15 starts.
Aug 25 - 2:03 AM

Joe Musgrove held the Cubs to one run in seven innings and was credited with a win on Saturday.

He struck out seven batters without issuing a free pass. He surrendered five hits, including a solo shot by Ben Zobrist for the only blemish on his boxscore. This makes five consecutive quality starts for Musgrove as he heads down the stretch in his first season with the Pirates after coming over in the Gerrit Cole trade with the Astros. He will try to keep the momentum going when he puts his 5-7 record and 3.31 ERA on the line against the Brewers on Friday.
Aug 18 - 10:58 PM

Joe Musgrove logged a quality start in Sunday's loss to the Giants, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits over his six innings of work.

The right-hander racked up six strikeouts on the afternoon while issuing just one free pass. Nick Hundley did most of the damage against him, with an RBI triple in the third inning and a run-scoring single in the fourth. Now 4-7 on the season, Musgrove will carry a respectable 3.49 ERA and 1.23 WHIP into Saturday's start against the Cubs.
Aug 12 - 6:54 PM

Joe Musgrove allowed two runs -- one earned -- over seven innings Monday in a loss to the Rockies.

Musgrove once again got very little support from the Pittsburgh offense as he fell to 4-6 on the year despite a crisp 3.41 ERA and 1.22 WHIP. He actually delivered the only extra-base hit of the game for the Bucs -- a double off opposing starter Kyle Freeland in the top of the third. Musgrove will face the Giants on the road next.
Aug 6 - 11:57 PM

Joe Musgrove allowed just one run over seven innings but took a loss to the Mets on Sunday.

It's a tough loss for the right-hander, as the Pirates just couldn't get anything going offensively against an excellent Zack Wheeler on Sunday. He only struck out two, but he initiated plenty of weak contact, and he put only two on via walk. He's now gone seven innings or more in three straight starts -- and four-of-five -- and his season ERA is now a very respectable 3.63 in 67 innings pitched. The Cardinals are next for Musgrove on Sunday.
Jul 29 - 4:46 PM

Joe Musgrove surrendered two runs in seven innings Tuesday in a victory over the Indians.

Musgrove cruised tonight after getting seven runs of support in the first two innings and threw just 88 pitches in completing the seven innings. He moved to 4-4 with a 3.90 ERA. He should remain of use in mixed leagues the rest of the way.
Jul 24 - 10:48 PM

Joe Musgrove allowed five runs over 7 2/3 innings with five strikeouts in a no decision against the Brewers on Sunday.

Musgrove allowed seven hits against the Milwaukee lineup, and he walked four. Things were going swimmingly for the right-hander, until he allowed three runs in the eighth inning; with all three coming on a Brett Phillips bases-loaded triple. The five runs bumps Musgrove’s ERA to 4.09, but he’s pitched better than that ERA suggests with a 50/16 strikeout-to-walk ratio over nine starts and 51 innings. His next start will likely come against Cleveland after the All-Star break, but he hasn’t been penciled in for that as of publication.
Jul 15 - 5:43 PM

Joe Musgrove notched a season-high nine strikeouts but lasted just five innings Tuesday in his return from the disabled list, yielding two runs in a loss to the Nationals.

Musgrove loaded the bases in the first inning but struck out the side to get out of it. He was one out away from getting through five scoreless, but a two-out Juan Soto infield single and Anthony Rendon home run put the Nats on the board. Musgrove has been inconsistent but now boasts a 45/12 K/BB ratio over 45 1/3 frames this season. He’ll look to close out the first half strong on Sunday versus the Brewers.
Jul 10 - 11:23 PM

Pirates activated RHP Joe Musgrove from the 10-day disabled list.

Musgrove landed on the DL at the end of June with a right index finger infection, but he'll make his return in a start Tuesday against the Nationals. The 25-year-old owns a solid 3.79 ERA and 36/11 K/BB ratio in 40 1/3 innings through seven starts this season. He needs to be picked up in fantasy leagues where he was dropped.
