Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said Joe Musgrove (shoulder) should resume throwing in "the coming days."
Musgrove skipped a scheduled bullpen session on Sunday after feeling some discomfort in his right shoulder and he hasn't picked up a baseball since, but Tomczyk told reporters on Wednesday that the issue is "minor" and the Pirates are simply taking "precautionary" measures. It's not a significant concern here on February 22, though Morton did miss some time last year in Houston with a shoulder issue and he's about a week behind the other rotation candidates in Pirates camp as Grapefruit League play gets underway. Joe Musgrove said Monday that he's not concerned about his shoulder.

Musgrove was forced to skip a scheduled bullpen session Sunday due to shoulder discomfort, but he downplayed it as "a little precautionary rest" and doesn't expect it to keep him off the field for long. There's obviously no reason to take any chances this early in camp. The Pirates will continue to monitor him before ramping things up again.

Joe Musgrove is dealing with discomfort in his right shoulder.

Musgrove felt it on Sunday and was forced to skip his scheduled bullpen session. More should be known on his status in the next couple of days, but it's not an ideal start to his first spring with the Pirates. Acquired from the Astros as part of the Gerrit Cole deal, Musgrove has been projected to be a part of Pittsburgh's starting rotation. It should be noted that he missed a couple of weeks with a shoulder issue last season.

MLB.com's Adam Berry writes that Joe Musgrove is expected to fill the Pirates' rotation spot vacated by Gerrit Cole.

Musgrove posted a 5.37 ERA over 25 starts and 1.26 ERA across 24 relief appearances with the Astros, but the Pirates believe he has the stuff to succeed as a starter over the long haul. The 25-year-old boasts a career 2.77 ERA in the minors and always had terrific control and groundball rates, so it's no surprise that the Pirates want to give him a long look as a starter. Musgrove will have to hold off Tyler Glasnow, Steven Brault and Nick Kingham for the final spot in Pittsburgh's rotation.

Pirates acquired RHP Joe Musgrove, 3B Colin Moran, RHP Michael Feliz and OF Jason Martin from the Astros for RHP Gerrit Cole.

Musgrove was Jekyll and Hyde in 2017, dominating as a reliever while getting lit up as a starter. Despite his struggles, the Pirates have incentive to let Musgrove start for as long as is tolerable, especially knowing he can pitch in relief if worst comes to worst. The 25-year-old isn't even eligible for arbitration until 2019.
Jan 13 - 7:17 PM

According to Yahoo Sports' Tim Brown, Astros starter Joe Musgrove is among the players heading to the Pirates in the Gerrit Cole trade.

FanRag Sports Jon Heyman hears four players will eventually become Pirates, although he says Musgrove and third baseman Colin Moran are expected to be the headliners. Musgrove is a 25-year-old right-hander who posted a 4.77 ERA in 38 games in 2017, although he was demonstrably better as a reliever than a starter. The Bucs will likely give Musgrove every chance to start in 2018, as they appear to be planning for the future with this move. Musgrove is under team control through 2021.
Jan 13 - 6:40 PM

Joe Musgrove got four outs for his second save Wednesday against the White Sox.

Musgrove, who went from struggling starter to setup man in the span of a few weeks, also got a two-inning save on Saturday. The Astros could have turned to Ken Giles in a 4-3 game tonight, but he had worked Tuesday and four times in six days overall. At this point, there's just no need to push him.

Joe Musgrove got his third win in relief after pitching 2 1/3 scoreless innings in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Mets.

The Astros ended up sweeping the doubleheader. Musgrove was a flop a starter, going 4-8 with a 6.12 ERA, but since moving to the pen in late July, he's allowed just three runs in 22 2/3 innings. He's the new Chris Devenski, now that Devenski is mostly a one-inning setup man.

Joe Musgrove has been moved to the Astros' bullpen.

This will clear a rotation spot for Collin McHugh, who is scheduled to make his season debut Saturday in Baltimore. Musgrove, 24, owns a 6.12 ERA and 1.51 WHIP in 78 innings this year at the major league level.

Joe Musgrove surrendered four runs in five-plus innings and absorbed a loss to the Twins on Saturday.

He gave up eight hits and two walks while striking out five batters in the outing. He began the game by allowing a leadoff homer to Brian Dozier, then settled down and didn't allow another run until the fifth inning. He came back out for the sixth and gave up two runs without recording an out in the frame. Musgrove has struggled all season long and now has a 4-8 record and 6.12 ERA in 15 starts. With the trade deadline looming he better turn things around fast or his club will bring in another pitcher to take his spot.

Joe Musgrove surrendered four runs in 5 2/3 innings and settled for a no-decision against the Braves on Wednesday.

He sailed through four innings before allowing all four runs in the fifth frame. Opposing pitcher Jaime Garcia drove in two of them and scored a third. Musgrove was brought back to the majors today after being demoted in late June. He didn't improve his ERA tonight but pitched pretty well nonetheless. He struck out six batters without issuing a walk. His record holds at 4-7 with an ugly 6.04 ERA in 14 starts.

Astros recalled RHP Joe Musgrove from Triple-A Fresno.

Musgrove will start for the Astros on Wednesday night against the Braves after working seven scoreless innings in his one outing at the Triple-A level. The 24-year-old right-hander has a rough 6.01 ERA in 67 1/3 innings this season with Houston, but he holds some fantasy streaming appeal versus Atlanta.

Joe Musgrove will be recalled from Triple-A Fresno to start Wednesday versus the Braves.

Musgrove owns a rough 6.01 ERA in 13 starts this season for Houston, but he's a better pitcher than that. The young right-hander carries some deep-league fantasy streaming appeal against the light-hitting Braves.

Astros optioned RHP Joe Musgrove to Triple-A Fresno.

This comes on the heels of a disastrous outing Friday against Seattle (3 2/3 IP, 12 H, 9 ER). Overall, Musgrove holds a 6.01 ERA in 13 starts for the 'Stros this year. He shouldn't be in the minors for long.
Sat, Jun 24, 2017 05:49:00 PM

Joe Musgrove was pounded for nine runs and 12 hits in 3 2/3 innings by the Mariners on Friday.

If the Astros had their bullpen set up more like they did last year, with Chris Devenski and Michael Feliz ready to pitch longer outings, they might have been able to stay in this game. As is, they kept Musgrove in the contest even as they were down 7-1 after three, giving him the chance to allow two more runs in the fourth. Musgrove's time in the rotation needs to come to at least a temporary end.
