Joe Musgrove held the Cubs to one run in seven innings and was credited with a win on Saturday.
He struck out seven batters without issuing a free pass. He surrendered five hits, including a solo shot by Ben Zobrist for the only blemish on his boxscore. This makes five consecutive quality starts for Musgrove as he heads down the stretch in his first season with the Pirates after coming over in the Gerrit Cole trade with the Astros. He will try to keep the momentum going when he puts his 5-7 record and 3.31 ERA on the line against the Brewers on Friday. Aug 18 - 10:58 PM

Joe Musgrove logged a quality start in Sunday's loss to the Giants, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits over his six innings of work.

The right-hander racked up six strikeouts on the afternoon while issuing just one free pass. Nick Hundley did most of the damage against him, with an RBI triple in the third inning and a run-scoring single in the fourth. Now 4-7 on the season, Musgrove will carry a respectable 3.49 ERA and 1.23 WHIP into Saturday's start against the Cubs.
Aug 12 - 6:54 PM

Joe Musgrove allowed two runs -- one earned -- over seven innings Monday in a loss to the Rockies.

Musgrove once again got very little support from the Pittsburgh offense as he fell to 4-6 on the year despite a crisp 3.41 ERA and 1.22 WHIP. He actually delivered the only extra-base hit of the game for the Bucs -- a double off opposing starter Kyle Freeland in the top of the third. Musgrove will face the Giants on the road next.
Aug 6 - 11:57 PM

Joe Musgrove allowed just one run over seven innings but took a loss to the Mets on Sunday.

It's a tough loss for the right-hander, as the Pirates just couldn't get anything going offensively against an excellent Zack Wheeler on Sunday. He only struck out two, but he initiated plenty of weak contact, and he put only two on via walk. He's now gone seven innings or more in three straight starts -- and four-of-five -- and his season ERA is now a very respectable 3.63 in 67 innings pitched. The Cardinals are next for Musgrove on Sunday.
Jul 29 - 4:46 PM

Joe Musgrove surrendered two runs in seven innings Tuesday in a victory over the Indians.

Musgrove cruised tonight after getting seven runs of support in the first two innings and threw just 88 pitches in completing the seven innings. He moved to 4-4 with a 3.90 ERA. He should remain of use in mixed leagues the rest of the way.
Jul 24 - 10:48 PM

Joe Musgrove allowed five runs over 7 2/3 innings with five strikeouts in a no decision against the Brewers on Sunday.

Musgrove allowed seven hits against the Milwaukee lineup, and he walked four. Things were going swimmingly for the right-hander, until he allowed three runs in the eighth inning; with all three coming on a Brett Phillips bases-loaded triple. The five runs bumps Musgrove’s ERA to 4.09, but he’s pitched better than that ERA suggests with a 50/16 strikeout-to-walk ratio over nine starts and 51 innings. His next start will likely come against Cleveland after the All-Star break, but he hasn’t been penciled in for that as of publication.
Jul 15 - 5:43 PM

Joe Musgrove notched a season-high nine strikeouts but lasted just five innings Tuesday in his return from the disabled list, yielding two runs in a loss to the Nationals.

Musgrove loaded the bases in the first inning but struck out the side to get out of it. He was one out away from getting through five scoreless, but a two-out Juan Soto infield single and Anthony Rendon home run put the Nats on the board. Musgrove has been inconsistent but now boasts a 45/12 K/BB ratio over 45 1/3 frames this season. He’ll look to close out the first half strong on Sunday versus the Brewers.
Jul 10 - 11:23 PM

Pirates activated RHP Joe Musgrove from the 10-day disabled list.

Musgrove landed on the DL at the end of June with a right index finger infection, but he'll make his return in a start Tuesday against the Nationals. The 25-year-old owns a solid 3.79 ERA and 36/11 K/BB ratio in 40 1/3 innings through seven starts this season. He needs to be picked up in fantasy leagues where he was dropped.
Jul 10 - 3:32 PM

Joe Musgrove (finger) is expected to rejoin the Pirates' rotation Tuesday against the Nationals.

Musgrove threw a bullpen session Sunday and said afterward that he's "good to go." He will have missed the minimum amount of time with an infected right index finger.
Jul 8 - 12:36 PM

Pirates placed RHP Joe Musgrove on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to June 30, with a right index finger infection.

The right-hander had been scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the Dodgers. It's unclear at this point who will take that spot. Musgrove has posted a cool 3.79 ERA and 36/11 K/BB ratio in 40 1/3 innings (seven starts) this season for Pittsburgh. He'll hopefully be ready for activation when first eligible early next week.
Jul 3 - 9:45 PM

Joe Musgrove tossed seven scoreless innings Friday in the Pirates' 6-3 win over the Padres.

After back-to-back rough outings, Musgrove had to be happy to see San Diego on the schedule. It's the second time in seven starts since coming off the DL that he's managed to go seven scoreless. He has a 3.79 ERA and a 36/11 K/BB ratio in 40 1/3 innings. There still should be some mixed-league value in his future.
Jun 30 - 1:51 AM

Joe Musgrove let in five runs in four innings and was charged with a loss to the Diamondbacks on Saturday.

He registered only two strikeouts against three walks and seven hits in the abbreviated outing. He was in trouble throughout his time on the mound and was pulled after throwing 70 pitches. This makes four bad starts in a row for the former Astro, who looked great in his first two starts for the Pirates after missing the first two months of the season with a sore shoulder. He falls to 2-3 with a 4.59 ERA after six starts. He has 31 strikeouts and nine walks in 33 1/3 innings total.
Jun 23 - 9:19 PM

MLB issued a $1,000 fine to Joe Musgrove for intentionally hitting Chris Owings of the Diamondbacks with a pitch last Monday.

Musgrove threw at Owings in response to his teammate Josh Harrison getting plunked. Usually pitchers will just say to the media that a pitch got away, but Musgrove admitted after the game that he did it on purpose. He said Monday that he doesn't plan to appeal the fine, but that he might be more careful about his comments in the future.
Jun 19 - 9:49 AM

Joe Musgrove allowed six runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings in a loss to the Reds on Sunday.

It was easily the worst start for Musgrove this year, as the former Astro wasn’t fooling the Cincinnati hitters at all, despite having six strikeouts in the four-plus innings. Musgrove was due for a bad start; it just wasn’t expected to happen against the Reds’ mediocre lineup. He still has a 3.68 ERA on the season, and he’ll attempt to get back on track when he faces the Diamondbacks on Friday.
Jun 17 - 5:30 PM

Joe Musgrove allowed three runs over six-plus innings of work with six strikeouts in a no decision against the Diamondbacks on Monday.

One of the runs was unearned. Musgrove breezed through the first six innings, but things did not go so well for the former Houston hurler in the seventh. He gave up a pair of run-scoring singles without getting anyone out, and then was charged for one more run in Jake Lamb's game-tying three-run shot. The line ends up fairly pedestrian, but it isn't an accurate representation of how well Musgrove pitched tonight, nor now good he was in his previous outings. He's a streaming option for Sunday when he faces the Reds.
