Joe Musgrove was fantastic in his long-awaited Pirates’ debut on Friday, tossing seven scoreless innings in an 8-1 victory over the Cardinals.
Musgrove’s season debut was delayed due to a shoulder issue from the spring, but he proved to be worth the wait on Friday. He scattered five hits while walking none and striking out seven. He was incredibly efficient in the process, throwing 50 out of his 67 pitches for strikes. According to STATS, he’s the first pitcher to throw at least seven innings on fewer than 70 pitches since Greg Maddux did it on September 18, 2008. Musgrove had the look of a fantasy sleeper after coming over to Pittsburgh in the Gerrit Cole deal and needs to be picked up in mixed leagues after this sort of outing. May 25 - 10:06 PM

Pirates activated RHP Joe Musgrove from the 10-day disabled list.

Musgrove will make his Pirates debut on Friday at home against the Cardinals after missing almost the first two months of the season with a shoulder issue. The right-hander came over from the Astros via trade this past offseason in the deal that sent Gerrit Cole to Houston.

Joe Musgrove (shoulder) will make his Pirates debut Friday against the Cardinals.

It had looked like it would be Wednesday, but manager Clint Hurdle officially announced Sunday that Friday will be Musgrove's debut with his new club. The right-hander has been out all season with a shoulder issue that cropped up in spring training but made it through four rehab starts with no issues, posting a 4.58 ERA and 17/2 K/BB ratio over 17 2/3 innings. Musgrove should be picked up in deeper mixed leagues, although it might be a good idea to keep him on the bench for a start or two to see how he looks.
May 20 - 11:18 AM

Joe Musgrove (shoulder) is in line to join the Pirates' rotation on May 23 against the Reds.

That's the target for now, at least. It could be a couple days later. Musgrove has registered a 2.13 ERA and 12/0 K/BB ratio through three minor league rehab starts (covering 12 2/3 innings) and he is scheduled for one more minor league rehab appearance Friday with Triple-A Indianapolis. The 25-year-old right-hander is worth stashing in deeper mixed fantasy leagues.
May 15 - 4:05 PM

Joe Musgrove (shoulder) is scheduled to make a rehab start Saturday for Triple-A Indianapolis.

Musgrove is scheduled to throw five innings or 80 pitches, whichever comes first. He's been making rehab starts for a few weeks now as he approaches a return to the Pirates rotation, and if this isn't his last before activation it's likely to be one of his last. Musgrove was a popular late-round dart throw in drafts before the injury, and he's a player to keep an eye on to see how he fares out of the gate.
May 12 - 4:27 PM

Joe Musgrove (shoulder) is scheduled to make his second rehab start Sunday with Double-A Altoona.

Musgrove allowed two runs on five hits and a walk in his three-inning minor league rehab debut Tuesday with High-A Bradenton. "Felt fine, the velocity was firm, threw his cutter, his slider, the changeup," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle told reporters Thursday. "It was a good first step." Musgrove could be ready to join the Pirates' rotation around the middle of May if he is able to avoid setbacks with his shoulder. The 25-year-old right-hander was acquired from the Astros this winter as part of the Gerrit Cole trade.
May 3 - 11:07 AM

Joe Musgrove (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment Tuesday in Class A Bradenton.

Musgrove will throw three innings in his first outing, and's Adam Berry said the plan is to have him make four rehab starts to build up his stamina to where he can throw six innings and roughly 100 pitches. That timetable still puts him at least three weeks away from returning to the Bucs. Musgrove hasn't pitched yet this year due to a right shoulder strain.
Apr 28 - 4:14 PM

Joe Musgrove (shoulder) threw about 35 pitches over two innings in a simulated appearance on Wednesday.

Musgrove used all of his pitches and tried to ramp up the velocity on his fastball from previous throwing workouts. "It went really well. It was really encouraging," Musgrove said. "I didn't feel like there was any abnormality in the way I was moving and the things I was doing. The ball was coming out clean. The velo was in a decent range, kind of where I was expecting it to be." The 25-year-old right-hander could soon be cleared to begin a minor league rehab assignment. He's on track to join the Pirates' rotation around mid-May, assuming no setbacks.
Apr 26 - 9:44 AM

Joe Musgrove (shoulder) is scheduled to make a simulated start on Wednesday.

If it goes well, the 25-year-old right-hander could be cleared to head out on a minor league rehab assignment by the weekend. Musgrove has been sidelined all season because of a lingering shoulder issue, but he threw all of his pitches in a 30-pitch bullpen session earlier this week and responded well to that workout. Things are looking up.
Apr 24 - 4:07 PM

Joe Musgrove (shoulder) is scheduled to throw off the slope of the mound Tuesday before throwing a bullpen session Thursday.

"I feel really good," he said. "Haven’t had any setbacks since we started throwing." Musgrove has been out all season with a shoulder issue that cropped up during spring training. He'll need multiple rehab starts before joining the Pirates' rotation, so it's going to be a while before he's activated even if all goes well.
Apr 15 - 11:34 AM

Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk indicated Thursday that Joe Musgrove (shoulder) is not close to throwing off a mound.

Musgrove was placed on the disabled list April 2, retroactive to March 30, due to shoulder issue that dates back to last summer. "We’ve only had him play catch on flat ground twice from 75 feet," Tomczyk said. "I think that still needs to manifest itself. Maybe by the end of this road trip we’ll have a better idea." The 25-year-old right-hander might not be worth waiting for in standard redraft fantasy leagues.
Apr 12 - 2:20 PM

Pirates' manager Clint Hurdle admitted Sunday that Joe Musgrove (shoulder) will require multiple minor league rehab starts before he's cleared to join the team's rotation.

Musgrove is eligible to be activated on Monday, but he isn't even close to being ready. Steven Brault will continue to occupy his spot in the rotation until the right-hander is ready to go.
Apr 8 - 9:55 PM

Joe Musgrove (shoulder) will be shut down for the next 5-7 days.

Musgrove battled a shoulder issue this spring and reported some lingering discomfort before a scheduled side session on Monday morning, so the Pirates placed him on the 10-day disabled list. The hope is he'll be ready to join the rotation before the end of the month, though that's obviously not a given. Shoulder injuries are always tricky. Steven Brault will take Musgrove's place Thursday versus the Reds.
Apr 2 - 5:26 PM

Pirates placed RHP Joe Musgrove on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to March 30, with a right shoulder strain.

Musgrove was originally scheduled to make his Pittsburgh debut on Thursday against the Reds, but he must have had a setback after his minor league start on Saturday. He's been dealing with shoulder issues all spring, and it sounds like he won't be able to join the Pirates' rotation until at least mid-to-late April at this point.
Apr 2 - 12:20 PM

Joe Musgrove is scheduled to make his Pirates debut Thursday against the Reds.

Musgrove dealt with a shoulder issue this spring, but he looked sharp in a minor league game on Saturday. The 25-year-old right-hander was acquired from the Astros this winter as part of the Gerrit Cole trade and will carry some fantasy upside in the Pirates' rotation. He holds a 4.52 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, and 153/44 K/BB ratio in 171 1/3 major league innings (25 starts, 24 relief appearances).
