Jake Smolinski went 3-for-4 with a solo homer and two runs scored in Friday’s 4-2 victory over the Angels.

Smolinski finished a single short of the cycle. The 29-year-old was limited to 16 games last season due to shoulder surgery, but he’s likely to begin 2018 as a bench player and backup center fielder to either Boog Powell or Dustin Fowler. Smolinski is a .243/.307/.374 hitter in the majors, so fantasy owners shouldn’t expect much here.

Jake Smolinski went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in Saturday's Cactus League loss to the Rangers.

Smolinski was one of the lone offensive bright spots for the A's, who finished with a paltry five hits as a team. The 29-year-old outfielder provided a brief spot of light with his solo home run in the fifth inning. That dinger was his third of the spring. While the early power is nice, Smolinski has never hit more than seven home runs in a season. His main allure comes in his glove. He's attempting to win out for an Opening Day starting outfielder slot.

Jake Smolinski hit a three-run homer in a 4-4 tie with the Royals in the Cactus League on Sunday.

Smolinski's three-run bomb came off of Jake Newberry in the fourth inning. The 29-year-old is currently battling for a starting spot in the outfield with the Athletics, but he's much more useful with the glove than he is with the bat, and he doesn't provide much value with his legs, either.

Athletics and OF Jake Smolinski avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $775,000 contract.

Smolinski was arbitration-eligible for the first time this offseason. The 28-year-old appeared in 16 games with the A's down the stretch after missing most of the year from shoulder surgery. He's a .243/.307/.374 hitter in the majors, with experience between all three outfield spots.

Athletics activated OF Jake Smolinski from the 60-day disabled list.

He's been sidelined since having shoulder surgery in spring training but completed a rehab assignment and is ready to go. Smolinski should see some starts against lefties.

Jake Smolinski (shoulder) will begin a minor league rehab assignment with High-A Stockton on Saturday.

It's Smolinski's first game action since undergoing shoulder surgery in spring training. He'll serve as the DH on Saturday. Depending on how he progresses in his throwing program, Smolinksi could be an option for the Athletics' outfield sometime next month.

Jake Smolinski (shoulder) resumed throwing on Friday.

It was his first time throwing since undergoing shoulder surgery four months ago. Smolinksi made about 20 throws from 45 feet and didn't show any ill effects. The 28-year-old is making progress but there's still no timetable for his return.

Jake Smolinski (shoulder) has begun doing sock throws.

Smolinski required arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder back in March. He's hoping to start throwing a baseball after the All-Star break, setting up a potential return during the second half.

Jake Smolinski (shoulder) has been hitting off a tee.

He was also able to shag fly balls for the first time on Thursday. The plan is for Smolinski to resume throwing during the first week of July. Smolinski is still a long ways off, but he's making progress.

Jake Smolinski (shoulder) is out of his sling and has resumed light weight work.

Per beat writer Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, Smolinski is still at least 11 weeks away from throwing. He was recently transferred to the 60-day disabled list and obviously won't be playing for Oakland any time soon.

Athletics transferred OF Jake Smolinski to the 60-day disabled list

Smolinski is dealing with a right shoulder injury and still has no clear timetable for recovery. This was merely a procedural move to create a spot on the 40-man roster for Jaff Decker.

Athletics placed OF Jake Smolinski on the 10-day disabled list with a right shoulder injury.

He's a little over two weeks removed from shoulder surgery. With Smolinski down for the count, Mark Canha will handle fourth outfield duties behind starters Khris Davis, Rajai Davis and Matt Joyce.

Jake Smolinski had his labrum repaired and a bursectomy procedure during his shoulder surgery Thursday.

Smolinski will be in a sling for four weeks and probably won't be an option in the A's outfield until June at the earlier. He was a favorite to win the last spot on the team's bench. Alejandro De Aza is one option there now, but the A's could grab someone on waivers at the end of the month.

Jake Smolinski will undergo surgery on his right shoulder.

Smolinksi has been bothered by the issue all spring and it simply hasn't responded as hoped. The exact nature of the problem isn't entirely clear, so more should be known about a timetable after the surgery. His absence means that Alejandro De Aza and Jaff Decker will compete for the fifth outfielder job.
