The Winnipeg Jets have signed Connor Hellebuyck to a six-year, $37 million contract.
Hellebuyck had filed for salary arbitration, but the hearing is no longer necessary. He finished second in Vezina Trophy voting after posting a 44-11-9 record, 2.36 GAA, and .924 save percentage in 67 games last season. While there's certainly some risk here given that Hellebuyck didn't do nearly as well in 2016-17, this also could prove to be a great contract for Winnipeg if he can maintain his level of play from last season. Eric Comrie will get the nod Thursday against Chicago.

Coach Paul Maurice wants to give Connor Hellebuyck some rest. Hellebuyck is expected to get another night off next Tuesday at Montreal, but it's unclear at this time if that start will go to Comrie, Steve Mason or Michael Hutchinson. Comrie owns a record of 1-1-0 this season at the NHL level with a 3.00 goals-against average and .885 save percentage.

Eric Comrie may get the call Tuesday against Los Angeles.

Connor Hellebuyck didn't participate in Monday's optional skate and the Jets don't play again until Friday, so a night off Tuesday would give him plenty of rest. Comrie has played in two games with Winnipeg in his career, including one start back in December this season.

Steve Mason was on bench for a third straight game on Saturday, but he could return to the crease soon.

"We'll get Steve some practice time and look at him for Columbus," said coach Paul Maurice, referring to Tuesday's game. The Jets stuck with Connor Hellebuyck because he played well in two straight wins and because of their schedule.

Jets captain Blake Wheeler believes his team needs to get better performances from their goalies.

The Jets moved on from Ondrej Pavelec this summer and they signed Steve Mason in free agency. Mason should be an upgrade for Winnipeg, but he's always had his issues with consistency. "We need better goaltending," said Wheeler. "It's a tough business, and being a goalie is tough. By no means is this closing the door on anyone, but I think having competition back there is really important." Mason will battle Connor Hellebuyck and Michael Hutchinson for starts.
