Thomas Greiss (lower body) does not have a timetable for his return yet, but coach Doug Weight doesn't believe it will be "too long."
Greiss was placed on injured reserve Monday retroactive to Feb. 16. Christopher Gibson has been recalled on an emergency basis to serve as Jaroslav Halak's understudy. Feb 19 - 11:10 AM

The much maligned goaltending tandem of Thomas Greiss and Jaroslav Halak have really stepped up over the Islanders' last two games.

The Isles are coming off of two consecutive shutouts, one by Halak and the other by Greiss. In fact, the Isles are the first NHL team to win two games by shutouts on back-to-back nights in which the opposition had more than 40 shots on goal in each, and the first NHL team to have consecutive 45-plus save shutouts. Maybe Islanders' coach Doug Weight was right all along in trusting Halak and Greiss with his net.

Jaroslav Halak has played well of late and has entrenched himself as the Islanders' starting goalie.

Isles' coach Doug Weight has decided to give Halak a good long run with the goalie job, starting him in five consecutive contests. In his last three games, Halak has posted a 2-1 record with a .937 save percentage and a 2.31 goals-against-average. Look for Halak to get the majority of the starts once the Islanders resume play after the All-Star break. Needless to say, Thomas Greiss owners are not too happy about this news.

Jaroslav Halak got the hook in a 6-1 loss to Colorado on Sunday night.

Halak allowed five goals on 35 shots before being pulled in favor of Thomas Greiss. Greiss had 12 stops on 13 shots in 20 minutes of relief action. Halak's record drops to 11-10-2 on the year to go with a 3.15 goals-against average and a .905 save percentage.

Jaroslav Halak will get the nod on Monday against Florida.

Halak picked up the loss against Ottawa on Friday night after Thomas Greiss was pulled. He allowed just one goal on 15 shots after Greiss surrendered five goals on 20 shots in a 6-5 defeat. Halak has a 7-6-0 record with a 2.86 GAA and .905 save percentage in 14 appearances this year.

As a reminder, Jaroslav Halak will get the start Saturday night against Buffalo.

Halak relieved Thomas Griess Friday night, who was pulled after allowing five goals on 26 shots against the Blue Jackets, and stopped all 11 shots that came his way. Although it is likely that both Halak and Greiss will be in a job share to start the campaign, we're betting on Halak eventually carving out the role as the Islanders' starting goalie.

Jaroslav Halak sees the 2017-18 campaign as a fresh start for himself.

"Obviously, last season was kind of a strange season, not only for me but for a lot of guys," Halak said. "Now it's a fresh start for everybody. But ultimately, it's going to come down to our start too. Last season, we all know we had a bad start. We just need to make sure that we pick up points at the beginning of the season because that hurt us at the end." Halak spent some time in the minors last year, but he handled the demotion well and played solid at the end of the campaign. He will compete with Thomas Greiss for starts in 2017-18.

The New York Islanders are considering recalling Jaroslav Halak.

Halak was relegated to the minors, but the 31-year-old goaltender has made the most of his time there, posting a 16-7 record, 2.19 GAA, and .923 save percentage. "There’s a lot of talk about it," Islanders coach Doug Weight said of promoting Halak. "He’s played really well, he’s had a great attitude. We’ll see what transpires here in the next couple of days." It remains to be seen what Halak's promotion would mean for Thomas Greiss' workload, but it is worth noting that the Islanders still have three back-to-back sets left.
