Aaron Gordon (hip) returned to action on Thursday with nine points on 3-of-9 shooting, five rebounds, five assists, two 3-pointers and one block.
Gordon played 25 minutes and might be limited for a few more games, but it's encouraging that the All-Star break was enough for him to fully recover. He bumped Mario Hezonja to the bench and should reclaim his usual 32+ minutes before long. Now owners just have to hope he regains his shooting touch -- his FG percentage has dropped every month this season, to a low of 35.4% in January. Feb 22 - 9:54 PM

Mario Hezonja played 27 minutes off the bench on Thursday, posting 15 points on 7-of-15 shooting, four rebounds, two assists, two steals and one 3-pointer.

Hezonja was thriving in an expanded role as a starter while Aaron Gordon (hip) was out, but this reserve role is not a death sentence for his fantasy appeal. When coach Frank Vogel was asked how he could maintain Hezonja's rhythm with the second unit, he replied, "Keep playing him a lot of minutes. I intend to keep him in there." If someone hastily cut him with Gordon back in action, don't hesitate to pick him up.

Nikola Vucevic (hand) and Aaron Gordon (hip) are "on track" to play Thursday vs. the Knicks.

Barring a setback, Vucevic will be back out there on Thursday following a two-month layoff, which will translate to Bismack Biyombo heading back to the second unit. Mario Hezonja has played really well in Gordon's absence, but his value figures to take a bit of a hit with AG back in action. Vucevic was flirting with top-15 value prior to going down, so he absolutely needs to be owned in all leagues at this point.
Feb 20 - 5:47 PM

Mario Hezonja followed up Monday's huge game with 21 points on 10-of-20 shooting, 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals in a tough loss vs. Charlotte on Wednesday.

Hezonja piled up four steals and three blocks in an all-around game on Monday, and he's been soaring in an expanded role without Aaron Gordon (hip). There's no stated return date for Gordon but he'll have an extended rest over the break, so Hezonja's owners should prepare for leaner stats. To be clear, he's scored 20+ points in three straight games and should obviously be held while we see how his role evolves.

The Magic are reportedly shopping Mario Hezonja and Elfrid Payton.

The Magic have made everyone aside from Jonathan Isaac and Aaron Gordon available, and there could be some incentive for them to flip Hezonja if they feel he won't re-up with them as a free agent this summer. Elfrid Payton is also bound for free agency, and most expect him to leave Orlando as a free agent this summer, so he could be another name to watch ahead of the deadline.
Feb 7 - 9:06 AM

Jonathon Simmons scored 15 points in Orlando's 115-98 blowout loss to Washington.

Simmons added two boards, two steals, and two triples on 5-of-9 shooting (three turnovers), but there was room for more here with Aaron Gordon (hip) still out of the lineup. Unless you're in a shallow league, Simmons is a fine enough hold, but there isn't a lot to get excited about here.
Feb 3 - 9:56 PM

Marreese Speights started vs. L.A. on Wednesday and scored a game-high 21 points with four rebounds, three 3-pointers and one assist in 23 minutes of action.

Speights started in place of Aaron Gordon (strained hip flexor), which bumped Mario Hezonja back to the bench. The veteran big man sank 6-of-11 field goals and 6-of-7 free throws, and he's now averaging 19.0 points over the past two games. Gordon is day-to-day, however, so Speights is just a DFS and streaming option.
Jan 31 - 10:42 PM

Mario Hezonja came off the bench for 14 points, four rebounds, three assists and one steal in 25 minutes vs. the Lakers on Wednesday.

Aaron Gordon (hip) was out tonight but the Magic opted for a big frontcourt with Marreese Speights alongside Bismack Biyombo. Hezonja still got his burn and he made the most of it with 5-of-8 shooting, including a 4-of-5 mark from downtown. As a young player on a lousy team, Hezonja is at least on the fantasy radar with the trade deadline approaching.
Jan 31 - 10:29 PM

Mareese Speights will replace Mario Hezonja in the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against the Lakers.

It's interesting that Speights is getting the start over Hezonja with Aaron Gordon (hip) out again, considering Hezonja posted 17 points, three triples, three boards, two assists and a block in a start on Tuesday, but it is what it is. In Speights previous start this season, he only managed to put up 7.0 points, two 3-pointers, one rebound, one turnover and nothing else in 18 minutes, so he's still not a great target tonight.
Jan 31 - 5:21 PM

Mario Hezonja will replace Aaron Gordon (hip) in the starting lineup Tuesday vs. Houston.

Gordon is sidelined due to a strained hip flexor. Super Mario has been productive in previous starts this season. Hezonja has started nine games for Orlando in 2017-18 and is averaging 14.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 30.7 minutes over those nine starts. He's a solid DFS value play on Tuesday night.
Jan 30 - 6:35 PM

Updating a previous item, Evan Fournier (sore right foot) is in Thursday's starting lineup vs. the Pistons.

Fournier is expected to get his usual allotment of minutes, so feel free to get him active. Aaron Gordon (calf) is also rejoining the first five, so the Magic can at least get some relief with Nikola Vucevic (broken hand) sidelined.

Frank Vogel praised Mario Hezonja's growth prior to Thursday's game vs. the Pistons.

On the same night that Hezonja heads back to the bench, no less. "Mario’s growing," Vogel said. "He’s growing & developing & he’s been a bright spot. Everybody needs to understand that he’s [still] a very young player. He looks like a far more comfortable player now than he did at any point last season." While Hezonja has looked better and has scored in double-digits in five straight outings, this is classic lip service from his head coach. Actions speak louder than words, and the Magic spoke loudly upon declining Hezonja's fourth-year contract option.

Mario Hezonja hit 6-of-12 shots for 14 points, five rebounds and a steal in 32 minutes of Tuesday's ugly loss to the Heat.

This could be Hezonja's swan song with Aaron Gordon nearing a return from his calf injury, but he's been playing well for the Magic. He didn't hit a 3-pointer, missing all four of his attempts, but had hit 12 of them in his previous four games. With Evan Fournier back from an ankle sprain and Gordon knocking on the door, owners can expect Hezonja's minutes to take a pretty big hit in the near future.

Orlando lost their fifth straight game on Sunday, despite Jonathan Simmons contributing 23 points, six rebounds and seven assists in 37 minutes.

Simmons added one steal in 37 minutes, making 10-of-19 FGs and 3-of-6 FTs in a 114-110 defeat in Detroit. Despite the losses, Simmons has stepped up admirably in a featured role with Evan Fournier (ankle), Aaron Gordon (calf) and Terrence Ross (knee) all out of commission. He dropped a career-high eight assists on Wednesday and is playing on-ball a lot lately, though that may not last with Fournier and AG just day-to-day. Either way, he's been a great waiver wire pickup and should hold low-end value even if he's coming off the bench.

Mario Hezonja scored a career-high 28 points in 31 minutes on Sunday, making 10-of-18 shots with eight 3-pointers, six rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Hezonja has made a compelling case for playing time during Aaron Gordon's (strained right calf) absence -- over the past four games, he's averaged 14.0 points, 2.5 triples, 5.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.0 blocks. Feel free to add him if there's someone you're itching to cut, but it's hard to envision Hezonja holding 12-team value once Gordon, Evan Fournier (ankle) and Arron Afflalo (back spasms) are all healthy.

Jonathon Simmons will replace Terrence Ross in the starting five for Monday's matchup against the Pacers.

Head coach Frank Vogel had been hinting for a while that he was contemplating switching up his starting five, and with how awful Ross has been, this move isn't very surprising at all. Simmons has been solid in relatively limited minutes this season and figures to trend up as a starter, so make sure he's not floating around on your waiver wire. Joining Simmons in the starting group will be Elfrid Payton, Evan Fournier, Aaron Gordon and Nikola Vucevic.

Serge Ibaka finished with 10 points, seven rebounds, one steal, and one block on 5-of-10 shooting in 27 minutes on Friday.

Ibaka also had five fouls and zero contributions from distance, so this is a pretty hollow line. Unfortunately, that's become more of an expectation than a surprise for some period of time now, and there is no evidence to suggest that's about to change anytime in the near future. Drafting Ibaka over names like Victor Oladipo, Clint Capela, and Aaron Gordon is already a regrettable move.

Jonathan Isaac (sprained right ankle) won't play on Wednesday, but he was seen without a walking boot.

Isaac said that he "still feels discomfort when he moves side to side," but he's feeling better. Orlando will play it safe but he gets a few days off before Saturday's game vs. the Blazers, so there's a chance we'll see him this weekend.
Wed, Nov 15, 2017 08:55:00 PM

Jonathan Isaac (sprained right ankle) was spotted sporting a walking boot on Monday.

Isaac has already been ruled out for Monday's game against the Warriors, but the fact that he's sporting a walking boot would suggest his absence could extend well beyond Monday's game. With him out, Aaron Gordon will get all the burn he can handle, and Jonathon Simmons could see a slight uptick in minutes.
Mon, Nov 13, 2017 03:04:00 PM

Jonathon Simmons will move into the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Celtics, sending Shelvin Mack back to the bench.

The Magic will go with a starting five featuring Evan Fournier, Simmons, Terrence Ross, Aaron Gordon and Nikola Vucevic. This will be Simmons' first time in the starting five in Orlando, and with the amount of opportunity coming his way tonight, he'll make for a very alluring DFS target. Mack should still get a decent amount of minutes off the bench with both Elfrid Payton (hamstring) and D.J. Augustin (hamstring) unavailable, but he does lose some luster with the bench role.

The Orlando Magic have selected F Jonathan Isaac with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft.

The Bronx native checks most of the boxes for today’s power forward and there’s a reason why he creates a lot of buzz. He’s 6’11" with a 7’1" wingspan, he made his freebies at a 78.0 percent clip, he blocks shots with 1.5 per game, he can rebound, and he made 1.0 trey per game. Isaac does have a face-up game, but he may have to add some size as he currently checks in at just barely over 200 pounds. He is also a little bit raw, so it could take him a couple seasons to get it going at the NBA level. This was the widely expected pick for Orlando, and it will be interesting to see how Aaron Gordon is utilized moving forward.
