Nationals recalled C Pedro Severino from Triple-A Syracuse.
The 25-year-old backstop hit a miserable .171/.256/.254 with two homers, 15 RBI and a 46/17 K/BB ratio over 203 plate appearances with the Nationals earlier this year before ultimately getting demoted to Triple-A. He'll add depth behind the plate over the final month of the season. Sep 1 - 2:35 PM

Matt Wieters (groin) is available off the bench Monday.

Wieters has been dealing with a groin injury and feels discomfort while running, so the Nationals are taking it easy with him. Pedro Severino will start behind the plate Monday against the Cardinals.

Matt Wieters exited Thursday's game against the Diamondbacks with an apparent left knee injury.

Wieters pulled up lame after reaching base on a second-inning single. He appeared to be moving very gingerly and had trouble going down the dugout steps. Pedro Severino pinch-ran for Wieters and will take over behind the plate. If Wieters lands on the disabled list, the Nats would likely call up Tuffy Gosewich from Triple-A Syracuse.

Nationals manager Dave Martinez told reporters that Matt Wieters is dealing with a sore wrist.

Wieters is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Mets, with Martinez citing that it's partially due to his sore wrist, and partially to keep the lineup the same. Consider Wieters day-to-day for now, and Pedro Severino will get the starts behind the plate until he's ready to go.

MLB.com's Jamal Collier writes that the Nationals plan on "using more of a platoon" with Matt Wieters at catcher this season.

Wieters has hit better against lefties in his career, so it's unlikely we're talking about any sort of strict platoon here, but rather the Nats simply planning to rest the veteran catcher more. Coming off a season in which he hit an ugly .225/.288/.344, Wieters should only be considered in two-catcher leagues at this point. Pedro Severino will have to hold off non-roster invitee Miguel Montero to be the No. 2 behind Wieters.
