Boog Powell (knee) has resumed baseball activities.
Powell has been on the disabled list since April 8 with the knee injury, and he started doing strength and conditioning activities at the end of April. He'll likely be able to go out on a rehab assignment soon, and then should have a chance to return to the Athletics -- assuming they want him on the 25-man roster -- near the end of May. Athletics optioned OF Dustin Fowler to Triple-A Nashville.

So it'll be Boog Powell in center field for the A's. Fowler had a good shot at winning the job, but he batted just .222/.245/.267 over 50 plate appearances in the Cactus League. The 23-year-old top prospect should force his way back up at some point.

Dustin Fowler went 1-for-4 with an RBI single in Friday’s victory over the Angels.

The A’s starting center field battle is going down to the wire between Fowler and Boog Powell. Coming off a brutal knee injury, Fowler is hitting just .195 (8-for-41) with 12 strikeouts and two walks over 16 games. Meanwhile, Powell is batting .256/.348/.333 over 17 games. It might not be the worst thing for Fowler to get some more seasoning in the minors.

MLB.com's Jane Lee writes that Dustin Fowler (knee) "is the favorite to land the center field job" for the Athletics.

Fowler suffered a gruesome right patella tendon rupture in his major league debut last June when he was with the Yankees, but he's right on schedule with his recovery. The A's plan to ease him into things at the beginning of spring training, but all signs point to him being ready to roll come Opening Day. It's good to hear, but Oakland could ultimately decide to get by with Boog Powell and/or Jake Smolinski in center field for a while and let Fowler knock some rust off in the minors. The situation is worth watching closely in spring training, as Fowler is an interesting power/speed guy who hit .293/.329/.542 with 13 homers and 13 steals in 70 Triple-A games before being called up last season.

He's sat out the last two games after bruising his right knee on a slide during Saturday's game. Cruz is considered day-to-day. Boog Powell is getting another start in the designated hitter spot.

Nelson Cruz (calf) is not in the Mariners' lineup Thursday against the Twins.

This marks his second straight absence. Boog Powell will serve as the DH while batting ninth Thursday against Twins right-hander Kyle Gibson. Cruz said an MRI showed a slight tear in his injured calf, though he plans to return for Friday's series opener against the Rays.

Nelson Cruz left Thursday's game against the Rockies with a left hand injury.

Kyle Freeland plunked him with an 89 mph cutter in the third inning. Cruz stayed in to run the bases but Boog Powell took his next at-bat for him. The Mariners have had a nightmare afternoon, losing Jean Segura (ankle) and now Cruz to injury. We'll update Cruz's status as soon as we know more.
