Lance Lynn surrendered five runs in four-plus innings against the Blue Jays and did not earn a decision on Friday.
He gave up a four-spot in the first inning, allowing RBI hits to Kendrys Morales, Kevin Pillar and Aledmys Dias in the frame. This was his first clunker in a Yankee uniform after joining the team in a deadline trade with the Twins. He had an ugly 5.10 ERA in 20 starts with the Twins prior to the trade but had allowed just one run in 16 2/3 innings since joining the Yankees. Today's beating takes some of the shine off his ERA in pinstripes, which went from 0.54 to 2.61 today. Aug 18 - 12:10 AM

Sonny Gray has been moved to the Yankees' bullpen.

He'll be available to pitch out of the pen beginning Saturday. Manager Aaron Boone hinted this move was coming by not committing to Gray's next start following a disastrous turn Wednesday against the Orioles (2 2/3 IP, 8 H, 7 ER). Despite Gray's resume, the right-hander has been a liability this year, struggling to a 5.56 ERA across 21 starts. Trade acquisition Lance Lynn is expected to absorb Gray's spot in the starting rotation. The 28-year-old handled his demotion gracefully, though Gray said he still believes he can contribute as a starter at some point.

Jon Heyman of Fancred reports that the Yankees have talked to the Twins about veteran starter Ervin Santana.

Heyman adds that the Yankees are also showing interest in Twins starters Kyle Gibson, Jake Odorizzi, and Lance Lynn. Santana finally made his 2018 debut on Wednesday against the Blue Jays after missing the first four months of the season due to complications related to February surgery on his right middle finger. He allowed three runs on seven hits over five innings in a no-decision versus Toronto.

Joel Sherman of The New York Post reports that the Twins could be willing to move some of their starting pitching before the trade deadline.

The Twins finished the first half 7 1/2 games back of the Indians in the AL Central and 13 games back of the Mariners for the second AL Wild Card spot, so it makes sense for Minnesota to explore moving pieces with playoff contention unlikely. Sherman notes that the Twins are open to dealing arms like Kyle Gibson and Jake Odorizzi, and Lance Lynn is a free agent at the end of the year, so he should be on the block as well. Gibson's inclusion is particularly interesting as an arm who is having a career year with a 3.42 ERA and 114/46 K/BB ratio over 115 2/3 innings. He's under contract through the 2019 season.

Jon Morosi of MLB.com hears that the Twins are open to trading their impending free agents, including Brian Dozier.

The Twins made the American League Wild Card Game in 2017 and were expected to be contenders this year, but they are currently 35-47 and have fallen to 10 1/2 games back of the Indians in the AL Central standings. Dozier should have appeal to a range of contending teams even in a down year, and Morosi notes that Eduardo Escobar, Lance Lynn, Zach Duke, and Joe Mauer are also due to become free agents this winter. Mauer has a full no-trade clause and probably wouldn't waive it to leave the Twin Cities, but who knows?

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that the Mets are interested in adding a starting pitcher, particularly Alex Cobb or Lance Lynn if prices fall.

At some point, there's going to be movement in the free agent market. It's hard to believe that Cobb and Lynn are still sitting out there this late into the offseason, but perhaps they are still waiting on Yu Darvish to sign before making their move. Either one would add depth and stability to the Mets' rotation.
