Madison Bumgarner (finger) threw a successful simulated game on Tuesday.
As long as he responds well to the workout, the ace left-hander should be cleared to begin a rehab assignment Tuesday with Triple-A Sacramento. He's expected to make around three rehab starts before joining the Giants' rotation around the middle of June. Bumgarner has been out all year with a fractured left pinkie. May 22 - 4:06 PM

Bruce Bochy announced that Ty Blach will start the season opener against the Dodgers on Thursday.

Ty Blach against Clayton Kershaw. Seems fair. Blach replaces Madison Bumgarner, who will miss the first two months of the year after fracturing his hand. The 27-year-old Blach posted a 4.78 ERA in 2017, and he struck out just 73 hitters in his 163 2/3 innings. You don't often say this about a starter pitching on Opening Day, but he should be avoided in virtually all fantasy formats.

Giants placed RHP Johnny Cueto on the 10-day disabled list with blisters.

Madison Bumgarner was activated in the corresponding move. Cueto is dealing with at least three blisters on his throwing hand and will take five days off from throwing. The right-hander has had a rough year and seems to be pretty down on himself, saying he's felt "like a rookie" at times. Matt Cain will take over Cueto's spot in the starting rotation.

Matt Cain will work out of the bullpen as a long-reliever with Madison Bumgarner (shoulder) set to return to the rotation.

"I've talked to Matty about his situation. He was good about it. He knows these things work out. He could be right back in the rotation," said manager Bruce Bochy. The Giants considered moving to a six-man rotation, but opted not to go in that direction. Cain, 32, has struggled to a 5.56 ERA and 1.69 WHIP in 18 appearances (17 starts) this season.
