Giants president of baseball operations Brian Sabean said Tuesday that Austin Jackson will "probably not" be the club's everyday center fielder.
The Giants inked Jackson to a two-year, $6 million contract on Monday, but the club is keeping an open mind on his ultimate role. Sabean said they'll continue to monitor low-salary trade options and will also consider prospect outfielder Steven Duggar. Jackson slashed .318/.387/.482 with the Indians last season, but most of his production was against lefties and he's not the defender he once was. He's better off in a fourth outfielder or platoon role. Jan 23 - 3:25 PM

Giants general manager Bobby Evans said Friday that Steven Duggar could begin the year in the minors, in a platoon in the majors, or "he might very well make our club as our center fielder."

In other words, the club is heading into camp with an open mind as to Duggar's role, with the hope that he wows them. Duggar might be the Giants' best defensive option in center field right now, but he's not on the 40-man roster yet and only has 13 games of experience at the Triple-A level. San Francisco would prefer to use Austin Jackson more as a fourth outfielder, but they might be more likely to bring in someone like Jarrod Dyson rather than roll with Duggar in center.

Lonnie Chisenhall (calf) is still out of the Indians lineup on Wednesday against the Angels.

Chisenhall hasn't played since he was removed on Thursday with tightness in his right calf. Austin Jackson is in left field for the Indians on Wednesday.

Bradley Zimmer is getting the night off Wednesday against the Athletics.

Austin Jackson will start in center field and Daniel Robertson will start in right field with the A's throwing left-hander Sean Manaea. Zimmer, a left-handed hitter, had a two-run double and a two-run homer in Tuesday's victory over Oakland and is batting .314/.400/.600 through his first 13 major league games.

Lonnie Chisenhall is not in the Indians' lineup Sunday.

Jason Kipnis is also sitting out as expected, and Yan Gomez is getting a day off, too. The Indians have Austin Jackson in center field, Michael Martinez at second base and Roberto Perez at catcher.

Lonnie Chisenhall is starting in center field for the Indians on Thursday night.

And he'll bat sixth versus White Sox right-hander Miguel Gonzalez. Chisenhall hasn't played much center field in his career, but the Indians apparently believe he's a good option there because they demoted Tyler Naquin to Triple-A Columbus on Thursday afternoon. Abraham Almonte and Austin Jackson should also see starts in center. This will be the first major league game of 2017 for Chisenhall, who suffered a shoulder injury in the middle of spring training.

Indians optioned OF Tyler Naquin to Triple-A Columbus.

Naquin finished third in the 2016 American League Rookie of the Year balloting with a .296/.372/.514 batting line in 116 games, but he was off to a poor start this season and the Indians are facing a roster crunch with Lonnie Chisenhall returning Thursday from a spring shoulder injury. Austin Jackson and Abraham Almonte will presumably share time in center field for Cleveland.
