Yankees released 1B Russell Branyan; re-signed him to a minor league contract.
We're assuming that Branyan was released only for procedural reasons, most likely due to the changes in the new collective bargaining agreement. The veteran slugger hasn't appeared in any Grapefruit League games this spring due to lingering issues with his back, but will start the season with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre once he's back to full health.

Russell Branyan has been dealing with a back injury since the beginning of camp.
Whatever chance Branyan might have had to make the Opening Day roster is dwindling rapidly. He'll likely begin the year at Triple-A, though it's not clear if he might have an opt-out clause in his deal if he doesn't crack the 25-man roster.

Yankees signed 1B/DH Russell Branyan to a minor league contract.
The deal includes a spring training invite. Branyan batted .197/.295/.370 with five home runs and 14 RBI in 146 plate appearances last season between the Diamondbacks and Angels. The 36-year-old offers some pop from the left side of the plate, but it's hard to count on him with his long history of back issues. His addition is not expected to impact the club's pursuit of Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui and Raul Ibanez.

Brett Gardner will not pick up a bat for 10 days after aggravating the muscle near his right elbow.
Gardner was expected to be activated from the disabled list Thursday after playing in two minor league rehab games, but he's now back to square one. Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that he'll likely miss 15-25 days, which places his return in late May or early June. Andruw Jones, Eduardo Nunez, Raul Ibanez, Jayson Nix and DeWayne Wise should all continue to see playing time in the outfield for now.

Michael Pineda (shoulder) told Sweeny Murti of WFAN that he expects to be "100 percent" by spring training next year.
"Yeah, the doctor before the surgery, he told me, 'Hey no worries. You can’t pitch this year, but I promise next year you’ll be ready 100 percent in spring training.' That’s what he told me before the surgery," explained Pineda. The 23-year-old right-hander needed surgery last month to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder and while he's young enough that there's still hope for his career, setbacks are certainly possible. He's no sure thing to be ready for spring training.

Ivan Nova (foot, ankle) is scheduled to throw a side session Thursday morning in Toronto.
If it doesn't go well, Nova will likely be scratched from his next scheduled start. He made an early exit from his outing Monday against the Orioles after suffering a contusion and sprain of his right foot and ankle.

We'll see about that. Players are almost always optimistic at the beginning of their disabled list stints, but oblique injuries very rarely result in minimum stays. We'd be surprised if Robertson returns before the end of the month. Rafael Soriano will handle the ninth inning for the Yankees for now.

He was cleared to make room for the newly-signed David Aardsma. Feliciano underwent rotator cuff surgery last September and is expected to miss most of the 2012 season.

The rehabbing right-hander had been limited to fastball-only bullpen sessions for the past couple of weeks, but he's beginning to take significant steps forward. Aardsma, who underwent Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery last July, could be a candidate to join the Yankees' bullpen before this year's All-Star break.

The update was provided via his personal Twitter account. Chamberlain, who dislocated his right ankle in March, now only needs a basketball ankle brace to get around. He's also ramping up his workload throwing and working out, which is significant since he's still less than a year removed from Tommy John surgery. There's a chance he could rejoin the Yankees' bullpen late this season if all goes well.

Yankees placed RHP Brad Meyers on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 26, with a right labrum strain.
Meyers, who was selected from the Nationals in December's Rule 5 Draft, didn't appear in a game this spring after injuring his should while working out during the offseason. The timetable for his return isn't yet clear, but he'll likely need to spend a couple of weeks in the minors before being a legitimate consideration for a call-up.

He's a candidate for the 60-day disabled list. Cabral had a solid spring as the Yankees' left-handed specialist, posting a 1.74 ERA and 12/1 K/BB ratio in 10 1/3 innings. Clay Rapada is now set to begin the year on the Opening Day roster.
