Benjamin Mendy will undergo surgery in Barcelona after tests confirm the defender ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
Pep Guardiola was hoping the former Monaco full-back could play in the Champions League earlier this week after limping off against Crystal Palace, but concerns began to grow when he was unable to train on Monday. Mendy then travelled to Barcelona to see world renowned knee specialist Ramon Cugat to determine the precise nature of his injury. In a statement released by the club on Thursday, they confirmed that ‘further examinations’ had revealed the extent of the damage and that Mendy would go under the knife tomorrow. There has been no timescale put on his recovery, although, as a general rule of thumb, a return to first-team action can take up-to 9 months which would effectively end his domestic season and seriously jeopardises his dreams of playing at the World Cup in 2018. Guardiola will look to Danilo or Fabian Delph to help fill the void before dipping into the transfer market once the window opens again in January. Thu, Sep 28, 2017 04:05:00 PM
