Stephen Ward is facing a spell on the sidelines following surgery to remedy a niggling knee problem.
The Republic of Ireland international was forced to withdraw from the recent Nations League fixtures after aggravating the injury during the Carabao Cup defeat at Burton Albion last month. Ward met with a specialist who advised that a "tidying-up procedure" would be the best course of action. The 33-year-old has been restricted to just three Premier League starts this term – all in August – having also struggled due to a foot complaint. Charlie Taylor will now look to establish himself under Sean Dyche following a slow start to his Clarets career since arriving from Leeds United in 2017. Elsewhere, there was better news for Burnley as Robbie Brady [knee and hamstring] scored and completed 90 minutes in a behind-closed-doors friendly on Tuesday, a match which also saw Steven Defour handed some valuable game time. Ashley Barnes, Tom Heaton, Phil Bardsley and Chris Wood were named in a strong side which cruised to a comfortable 6-3 win over AFC Fylde. Oct 16 - 4:12 PM
