Sam Darnold completed 13-of-18 passes for 96 yards and a touchdown while adding eight rushing yards on two carries Friday in the Jets’ preseason opener against the Falcons.

Darnold entered with 8:41 remaining in the second quarter and led the offense for the remainder of the night. He was the third Jets signal-caller to see the field following brief stints by starter Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater. The rookie shined in his debut, particularly in the first half when he completed 9-of-11 passes for 74 yards and a touchdown. He closed the first half with a 14-yard strike to Charles Johnson on a beautifully-thrown pass to the corner of the end zone. Johnson should have scored two plays earlier on first-and-goal but dropped a screen pass that would have gone for an easy touchdown. Darnold nicked his left hand on a first-half scramble but was able to play through it. He wasn’t as effective in the second half—the Jets had a big lead and mostly ran the ball—but it was still an encouraging debut for Darnold, especially considering his late arrival at training camp. The 21-year-old’s next test will come Thursday against the Redskins.

Dolphins coach Adam Gase said the team is not looking at "surgical options" for Ryan Tannehill (shoulder).

He's sitting again this week and reportedly faces an "uphill challenge" to play in Week 8. Tannehill's shoulder injury is obviously more serious than initially thought, though the Dolphins are confident he won't require surgery. Brock Osweiler will continue to fill in at quarterback for Miami.
Oct 18 - 1:15 PM

Justin Houston (hamstring) did not practice Thursday.

He was also out Wednesday, suggesting he is on the way to a second missed game in a row. Dee Ford has been outstanding this season, but Kansas City's pass rush is a concern with Houston sidelined.
Oct 18 - 12:51 PM

Eric Berry (heel) did not practice Thursday.

Berry has not practiced yet this season. Ron Parker and Jordan Lucas started at safety for the Chiefs last week, but it looks like they will get Eric Murray back this week.
Oct 18 - 12:50 PM

Theo Riddick (knee) did not practice Thursday.

Riddick also sat out Wednesday, so it looks unlikely he will be ready to face the Dolphins this week. Riddick sitting would finally force the Lions to move Kerryon Johnson into a more featured role.
Oct 18 - 12:41 PM

T.Y. Hilton (hamstring) is expected to practice Thursday.

Hilton said his hamstring responded well after a full session on Wednesday. "Feeling good," Hilton said. "Taking it one day at a time. There's no need to rush it." Hilton looks on track to face the Bills.
Oct 18 - 12:35 PM

Giants signed Corey Coleman to their practice squad.

Coleman's tour of the NFL continues. Cut twice by the Patriots in the last month, Coleman's Dynasty value is hanging on by a thread.
Oct 18 - 11:50 AM

Isaiah Crowell (foot) returned to practice Thursday.

This is an improvement for Crowell, who sat out both Wednesday and Thursday last week before suiting up against the Colts. He looks on track to play against the Vikings, but he will be nothing more than a low-end RB3 in a tough matchup.
Oct 18 - 11:49 AM

Giovani Bernard (knee) did not practice Thursday.

He also sat out Wednesday's session, and it would be a shock if he is ready to return this week. With Bernard out, Joe Mixon is a workhorse back in a great matchup against the Chiefs.
Oct 18 - 11:47 AM

Robby Anderson (hamstring) returned to practice Thursday.

Anderson sat out Wednesday's session. It is likely he is limited on Thursday, but this is still a great sign for his availability. With Quincy Enunwa (ankle) set to sit, Anderson could see a bump in his target share.
Oct 18 - 11:45 AM

Leonard Fournette (hamstring) will not practice Thursday.

Fournette also sat out Wednesday. Two missed practices to start the week all but ensures Fournette will miss another game. The Jaguars head to London in Week 8 before going on bye in Week 9. It is possible Fournette is out through the off week.
Oct 18 - 10:18 AM

ESPN's Cameron Wolfe reports Ryan Tannehill (shoulder) faces an "uphill challenge" to return Week 8.

Ruled out for this week early, it always seemed unlikely he would be ready for a Thursday night matchup with the Texans in Week 8. Brock Osweiler will start at least the next two games.
