Panthers second-year WR Curtis Samuel (ankle) needed surgery to repair both a broken bone and ligament damage following his Week 10 injury.

Samuel caught 15 passes for a measly 115 yards and no touchdowns as a rookie. He was hurt far more often than he was healthy, as he also battled back and hamstring issues. Samuel was finally sent to I.R. in late November. He currently has no timetable for recovery and remains in a boot and rehab. The team is optimistic Samuel will be ready for training camp come July.

Seahawks first-round RB Rashaad Penny (finger) resumed practicing on Friday.

His level of participation remains unclear, though it's fair to assume he was limited. The rookie was seen wearing a splint on his broken left finger. Despite his first-round pedigree, Penny is expected to begin his career as the backup to 2017 seventh-rounder Chris Carson.

Samaje Perine is expected to miss "at least" a week with a sprained ankle he suffered in Thursday's preseason game against the Jets.

It looks like Perine avoided a major injury, though he'll still be missing important practice reps. With Perine, Derrius Guice (ACL) and Byron Marshall (ankle) all on the shelf, the Redskins are looking extremely thin at running back. Washington would be wise to scour the market for backfield depth. Maybe they'll give ex-Giant Orleans Darkwa a call.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports free agent WR Dez Bryant left his Browns visit without a contract.

However, the door is "not closed." There's incentive for both sides to get a deal done—Bryant needs a job while the Browns are desperate for receiver depth with Josh Gordon MIA. Dez is reportedly seeking a one-year prove-it deal.

Jamaal Williams has been diagnosed with a "minor" ankle sprain.

Williams suffered the injury in Thursday's preseason game against Pittsburgh. Luckily he avoided the dreaded high-ankle sprain and should be fine for the start of the regular season. Williams should play a big role early in the year with Aaron Jones suspended for the first two games. He's worthy of RB3 consideration in all fantasy formats.

Dez Bryant and his agent, Kim Miale, are still reportedly talking to the Browns about a contract.

Bryant and Miale stayed in Cleveland overnight and will meet with the team again Friday afternoon. Even so, Cabot states the deal might not get done today. The Browns need a body at receiver, but Bryant's declining athleticism only mucks up Cleveland's receiving corps for fantasy once (if?) Josh Gordon returns. The Browns could potentially open Week 1 at home with Jarvis Landry, Gordon, and Bryant as their top three receivers.

Patriots first-round OL Isaiah Wynn (torn Achilles) was ruled out for the 2018 season.

Wynn was reportedly going to serve as depth to start the year, but his versatility was much needed for a team that lost premier left tackle Nate Solder in free agency. The Patriots line will now likely shake out as LT Trent Brown, LG Joe Thuney, C David Andrews, RG Shaq Mason, and RT Marcus Cannon, with very little serviceable depth. New England's other first-rounder, Sony Michel, remains questionable for Week 1.

49ers GM John Lynch said Jerick McKinnon will be out of action until Week 1.

It's hardly a shock after McKinnon averted what was initially thought to be a more serious injury. With Matt Breida (shoulder) also sidelined until Week 1, all preseason reps will now fall to 2017 fourth-rounder Joe Williams, free agent acquisition Alfred Morris, Raheem Mostert, and former fifth-rounder Jeremy McNichols. McKinnon and Breida will inevitably open the season as the 49ers' top two backs, but Morris could contend for more carries with a strong showing.

Jamaal Williams believes the ankle injury he suffered in Thursday's preseason game against the Steelers in minor.

Speaking afterward, Williams said he was unsure if he would have returned were it a regular season game, but seemed confident he had avoiding something serious like a high-ankle sprain. It sounds like Williams will probably miss a few days of practice before returning some time before next week's regular season dress rehearsal.

Nick Foles (shoulder) will undergo tests on Friday.

Speaking Thursday night, Foles said he was feeling good, but the Eagles have decided the issue merits a closer look. More than likely, the tests will bring back good news.

The Athletic's Jeff Howe reports Rex Burkhead is dealing with a "slight tear" in his knee.

It sounds bad, but Howe reports it's been "deemed a minor injury," and is something the Patriots believe he will be able to play through. Howe reported earlier Thursday that Burkhead likely would have suited up for the Pats' exhibition game against the Eagles were it the regular season. It seems to be a legitimately minor injury, though it's worth noting Burkhead was also plagued by knee issues down the stretch in 2017.

Sam Darnold completed 8-of-11 passes for 62 yards and an interception in the Jets' second preseason game.

It was a less impressive performance from the rookie than his debut. He struggled a bit with pressure, taking two sacks including a drive-ender in which he held the ball too long, and he was intercepted on a fourth-down play in which he appeared to pre-determine his target and forced the ball into double coverage. He was not helped much by his offensive line, however, and still had a couple nice third-down conversions to Tre McBride. It was a step back, but Darnold still should be the heavy favorite to start Week 1.
