Bills C Eric Wood's official retirement has been put on hold due to salary cap issues.

Wood was nearly an hour late to his own retirement presser, and then read just a one-minute statement without taking questions. GM Brandon Beane alluded to cap concerns. "We don't have any cap room right now," Beane said. "You roll it over (into the next season). He'll be on our roster for a while, until we figure things out." Wood avoided using the word "retirement" for procedural reasons, though he acknowledged he will not be playing football anymore. Wood should get a proper sendoff at some point this offseason, likely after June 1, when his cap hit can be better spread out.

The New Orleans Advocate believes second-year UDFA Taysom Hill could be a legitimate contender for the Saints' No. 2 quarterback job.

Hill came out of BYU as an elderly (now 27) undrafted free agent last year. He was claimed off waivers from the Packers after catching the Saints' eye on film. He made a few splash plays on special teams near the end of the season and was a frequent topic of conversation between FOX's Joe Buck and Troy Aikman during a December broadcast. The duo was apparently taken aback by glowing comments coach Sean Payton made about the rookie. It's pad-less practices, but Hill has been drawing strong reviews for his work in OTAs, particularly his speed at the quarterback position. Only Tom Savage and J.T. Barrett stand between Hill and backup duties.

NFL.com's Tom Pelissero reports the Steelers have "no expectation" that Le'Veon Bell will report before he did last season, which was Sept. 1.

Under no obligation to report since he hasn't signed his franchise tag, Bell can show up at his leisure. The sides have until July 16 to reach a long-term agreement. It's not looking likely. In the event no deal is reached, Bell will almost certainly skip the entire preseason and report close to Week 1.

Packers signed TE Marcedes Lewis, formerly of the Jaguars.

The longtime — 12 years — Jaguar will join Jimmy Graham as a blocking complement. As evidenced by his five touchdowns last season, 34-year-old Lewis also offers a strong pair of hands in the red zone. Lewis should catch some touchdown passes from Aaron Rodgers but won't be a fantasy option in 2018. It's possible Lewis' presence ends up making Lance Kendricks expendable.

Yahoo Sports reports that, using a "Washington consulting firm," the NFL polled fans last summer on whether free agent Colin Kaepernick should be signed.

Per reporter Charles Robinson, the poll also included questions on domestic violence, gambling, player protests and player safety. Kap was reportedly the "only player singled out in the research for specific opinions." That could create headaches for the league in Kap's collusion lawsuit.

The Seahawks expect FS Earl Thomas to report for mandatory minicamp.

Upset with his contract situation — and perhaps the fact he wasn't traded this offseason — Thomas is skipping voluntary workouts. The Seahawks worked hard to deal Thomas but were unwilling to unload him for pennies on the dollar. It's possible something is still worked out between now and Week 1, but Thomas should spend 2018 in Seattle.

Reuben Foster reported to 49ers OTAs on Thursday.

Foster reported one day after he had domestic violence charges dismissed, and a weapons felony reduced to a misdemeanor. At one point, Foster's NFL career appeared in peril. Now, he is unlikely to face any league discipline.

Contradicting his public statement, Terrance Williams told police that Kendall Wright, whom Williams played with at Baylor, was the driver for his weekend car accident, and that Williams was not in the car.

Williams' initial comments to police basically contradicted everything he ended up saying in his public statement on Sunday. Whatever happened, Wright does not currently appear to be in any sort of trouble with the law. Williams is facing charges of public intoxication and leaving the scene of an accident. His entire story can be found at the link below.

Bucs signed No. 12 overall pick DT Vita Vea to a four-year contract.

The deal includes a fifth-year team option for 2022. In three years at Washington, Vea tallied 15 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks. Vea draws Haloti Ngata comparisons for his gargantuan size and powerful bull rush, but his get off is much less explosive, and Vea played only 62% of UW's 2017 defensive snaps. Still, Vea’s tape shows light feet for a big man, position flexibility, and an ability to create space for linebackers behind him to run free.

Saints coach Sean Payton confirmed Mark Ingram is expected to report for mandatory minicamp.

Although eligible to participate, the suspended running back is skipping voluntary OTAs. He's unhappy with his contract situation. He's heading into the final year of his deal. Ingram's ban and Alvin Kamara's emergence have made a summer extension extremely unlikely for the eighth-year pro.

Speaking Thursday, Saints coach Sean Payton said Cameron Meredith (knee) is "way ahead of schedule" in his recovery.

If you're not ahead of schedule this time of year, you're behind schedule. It's still good to hear the Saints are happy with Meredith's recovery. The ex-Bear is eight months removed from going under the knife to repair his ACL. There's a chance he's declared 100 percent ahead of training camp but it's more likely that he's brought along slowly, and perhaps held out of the preseason.

Dak Prescott said Tavon Austin will be used all over the formation with the Cowboys.

"Coaches have a great plan, whether it's getting him out of the backfield, lining him up at X, lining him up at Z, putting him in the slot," Prescott said. "He's a guy we get the ball in his hands, he'll score some points and get a bunch of yards in this offense." Earlier this month, EVP Stephen Jones said Austin is a "web back" who they want to get "a dozen to two dozen" touches per game. Consider us skeptical, but the Cowboys are shoveling as much coal into the hype train as possible.
