Chiefs hired Mike Kafka as quarterbacks coach.

He'll be tasked with mentoring 2017 No. 10 overall pick Patrick Mahomes. Kafka earned the promotion after spending last season as a quality control coach. Doug Pederson, Matt Nagy, Pat Shurmur, and Brad Childress have all served as Andy Reid's QBs coach, and all four went on to become NFL head coaches.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports free agent Dez Bryant is looking for a one-year, "prove-it" deal with the Browns.

The 29-year-old believes he can re-establish his value in Cleveland. Visiting on Thursday, Bryant was accompanied by his agent, and suggested he badly wants to get a deal done. The Browns seem eager, as well. It's probably going to happen some time in the next 24 hours.

Joey Bosa (foot) remains sidelined and will sit out Saturday's preseason game against the Seahawks.

Bosa's foot injury was called "nothing serious" when it happened, though he's now been sidelined nine days. The Chargers have zero incentive to rush their defensive superstar, though it would be nice to see Bosa dressed for the regular season dress rehearsal on August 25.

The Athletic's Jeff Howe reports the Patriots have had extension talks with contract-year WR Chris Hogan, but that the sides "remain a bit too far apart at the early stages of the process."

How considers the process to be "ongoing." Now 30, Hogan was a restricted free agent that last time his contract came up. He's not going to have much incentive to take a team-friendly deal. This could be a tricky one, especially since Hogan missed half of 2017.

Doug Baldwin (knee) was spotted doing sprints at Seahawks practice on Thursday.

Beat writer Michael-Shawn Dugar observed it was the first time he had seen Baldwin sprinting since his injury. Normally talkative coach Pete Carroll hasn't updated Baldwin's status in roughly two weeks, but this would count as legitimate progress. The Seahawks have insisted Baldwin will be ready for Week 1.

Delanie Walker is being "evaluated" after suffering a lower-body injury in Thursday's practice.

Walker walked "gingerly" off the field. Speaking afterward, coach Mike Vrabel said he was waiting for an update. "Hopefully he'll be ok," Vrabel added. It's believed Walker injured his toe. A true football warrior, Walker has played through all manner of injury, including past toe issues. As of now, we would expect him to be fine for Week 1.

ESPN's Katherine Terrell reports John Ross has had a "good" training camp.

Ross has been running as the No. 2 receiver. He had a disappointing preseason opener, corralling just 1-of-5 targets for 20 yards. His next chance comes against the Cowboys on Saturday night. Ross has blamed his awful rookie season on being unhealthy from the get go. He has said his body is finally right for 2018. Although it's only his second year, it's looking like a make-or-break campaign for the oft-injured speedster.

The Athletic's Matthew Fairburn expects Josh Allen to work with the second-team offense during the second preseason game.

Allen worked with the second-team "exclusively" during the last week of practice, the first time that has happened. The Twitter mob latched hold of a disastrous play, but Allen actually had a pretty good debut last week. If he can replicate that on Friday against the Browns, he could push for the Week 1 start.

Ben Roethlisberger has cleared the concussion protocol.

Roethlisberger was thought to have suffered a concussion when he took a hit during Tuesday's practice. Clearing the protocol this quickly suggests he was not actually concussed, however. Roethlisberger will not play Thursday night, but he will be fine for the third preseason game.

Odell Beckham believes his contract situation will "work itself out."

"When is it going to happen? You don't know," Beckham continued. "It's a matter of time, just like everything in life." It is likely Beckham continues to sit out preseason games while the contract situation is resolved, but he was a full-go during joint practices with the Lions this week. Healthy and hopefully in a better offense, Beckham has an argument to be the second receiver off the board in fantasy drafts.

Browns OC Todd Haley said Baker Mayfield has "made consistent progress."

"I thought it wasn’t too big for him," Haley said of the preseason opener. "He was by no means perfect, but he kept his cool. He was never flustered. I think it’s clear to everybody he can really throw the football." Despite the strong showing in the first preseason game, the Browns have vowed to stick to the plan at quarterback, and Haley tempered his praise by saying Mayfield has to "keep working" and "keep learning from the older guys in the room." Tyrod Taylor is going to start Week 1, but Mayfield should see the field at some point as a rookie.

The New York Daily News' Manish Mehta believes "it’d be an upset" if Sam Darnold does not start Week 1.

"Barring deer-in-the-headlights moments over the next couple weeks," Mehta writes. "The brain trust is happier with this kid with each passing day." Coming off an outstanding debut, Darnold received the bulk of the first-team reps this week and is expected to start the second preseason game on Thursday night. Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater are solid options, but the Jets have to start Darnold if he proves ready.
