Ravens promoted LBs coach Don Martindale to defensive coordinator.

An NFL assistant since 2004, "Wink" has been coaching the Ravens' linebackers since 2012. He has one prior year of coordinating experience, the Broncos in 2010. Martindale is being billed as an aggressive coach in the Rex/Rob Ryan mold. We would expect little drop off from a defense that's been the engine of the Ravens going on three decades.

Bills coach Sean McDermott said tests on A.J. McCarron's injured collarbone were "not totally conclusive."

McCarron was believed to have suffered a broken collarbone Friday against Cleveland, though now he's headed for a second opinion. McDermott said the team will "pick up where we left off" upon McCarron's return from injury, implying that Josh Allen has yet to lock up the starting quarterback job. Still, we'd be surprised if Allen didn't get the ball in Week 1, particularly with McCarron banged up.

Bills coach Sean McDermott said DT Kyle Williams (knee) is week-to-week.

He hurt his knee during Friday's preseason game at Cleveland. Williams will not require surgery, though he's still expected to miss a few weeks. We'd consider him questionable for Buffalo's season opener at Baltimore on September 9.

Bengals released S George Iloka.

Iloka's release saves the Bengals $4.4 million in cap space. A mainstay in Cincinnati, the 28-year-old collected 80 tackles and one interception over 16 starts last year. It's been a rough offseason for safeties on the open market, though we're guessing Iloka won't take long to resurface. With Iloka out of the picture in Cincinnati, look for second-round rookie Jessie Bates to start at strong safety.

According to ESPN Jets reporter Rich Cimini, first-round QB Sam Darnold is "trending toward" starting Week 1 against the Lions.

Darnold continues to see the bulk of New York's first-team practice reps and will likely draw the start in Friday's regular season dress rehearsal against the Giants, just as he did last week against the Redskins. Selected third overall in April's draft, Darnold has impressed since ending his contract holdout last month. All signs point to the 21-year-old getting the nod in Week 1.

Nick Foles (shoulder) will return to practice on Sunday.

Foles had an injury scare Thursday night against New England, but obviously it was nothing serious. He's expected to split reps with Carson Wentz during Sunday's 11-on-11 drills. Both players should be ready for the Eagles' opener on September 6.
Aug 19 - 12:12 PM

Demaryius Thomas was held out of Saturday's preseason game against the Bears due to a wrist injury.

Coach Vance Joseph said the injury occurred at Thursday's practice. It doesn't sound like the Broncos are overly concerned, though obviously it's something to watch for. Last year ended Thomas' streak of five straight 1,000-yard receiving seasons, though the 30-year-old should fare better with Case Keenum under center in 2018.

Free agent RB Jamaal Charles will visit the Redskins on Sunday.

Former Giant Orleans Darkwa is also in town for a visit. Washington's backfield is running on fumes right now with Derrius Guice (ACL), Samaje Perine (ankle) and Byron Marshall (ankle) all sidelined. Despite averaging a healthy 4.3 yards per carry for Denver last year, Charles has attracted minimal interest on the open market. The 31-year-old would give the Redskins a much-needed healthy body, though it's unlikely he'd become a fantasy factor in Washington.

Cowboys RG Zack Martin is dealing with a hyperextended left knee.

He'll undergo an MRI later today to confirm the diagnosis. Martin suffered the injury after colliding with Bengals CB Dre Kirkpatrick in the second quarter of Saturday's preseason game. Coach Jason Garrett said the team's medical staff was "somewhat optimistic" based on their initial findings. The four-time All-Pro selection earned PFF's No. 1 grade among 80 qualifiers at guard last season.

Browns coach Hue Jackson said there's "a chance" Josh Gordon will be ready for the team's season opener against the Steelers on September 9.

He reported to the Browns facility on Saturday after missing the first few weeks of camp while tending to his "overall health." Gordon trained on his own in Florida during his time off, though it might take a week or two of practice reps for him to get back into playing shape. "His focus is going to be on meetings and conditioning and then we'll just kind of go from there," said Jackson. "Hopefully, we can get him up and running by the first game." The 27-year-old is unlikely to suit up against the Eagles on Thursday night, though he could see action next week in Cleveland's preseason finale versus Detroit. Now that he's back, Gordon is safe to draft as a borderline WR2 in all leagues.

Chiefs signed CB Orlando Scandrick, formerly of the Redskins, to a one-year, $1.5 million contract.

Scandrick was let go by Washington last week. He fills a need for the Chiefs, who are looking thin in the secondary following the offseason departures of Marcus Peters (traded to the Rams) and Terrence Mitchell (signed with Cleveland). Steven Nelson's concussion Friday night likely created an even greater sense of urgency. In KC, Scandrick will likely back up Kendall Fuller at slot corner.

Trey Burton caught 4-of-5 targets for 45 yards and a touchdown in the Bears' third preseason game Saturday night.

Burton got all of his production in barely over a quarter. Built more like a wide receiver than tight end, Burton projects to play a major role in Chicago's revamped passing game, where Mitchell Trubisky excelled targeting the middle of the field as a rookie. Burton will run roughly half of his routes in the slot. He looked like Trubisky's go-to guy in Saturday night's exhibition.
