Bengals hired Teryl Austin as defensive coordinator.

Austin was a hot name on the coordinating circuit, drawing strong interest from the Raiders and getting connected to the Packers as well. Although Austin's defenses in Detroit were far from dominant, he maximized the Lions' talent and is one of the league's most respected defensive minds. With DE Carl Lawson, WLB Vontaze Burfict, LE Carlos Dunlap, and CB William Jackson in place, Austin inherits a talented Bengals defense that faded down the 2017 stretch due to injuries.

Free agent Dez Bryant will visit the Browns on Thursday.

After some volleying through the media, the sides are finally taking their long-awaited meeting. For his part, Bryant said he "wants to be right" before choosing a new home. The time is apparently now. With Josh Gordon's situation still uncertain, the Browns need a body at receiver.

Jaguars.com expects the team to feature Corey Grant more in 2018, "maybe a lot more."

In-house writer John Oehser believes OC Nathaniel Hackett is "too smart to leave a weapon like Grant on the sidelines again." Although it seemed like he was routinely making big plays, Grant touched the ball just 33 times last season. Even if Leonard Fournette is healthy and explosive this year, that number probably needs to go up for Grant. He will struggle for standalone fantasy value, but that would change were Fournette to go down with injury.

Jaguars.com reports Dede Westbrook has remained a standout throughout training camp.

In-house writer John Oehser believes Westbrook might be forcing himself into the Jaguars' top three, and "could be earning him a far bigger role this season than some observers expected." Westbrook has been hyped since the opening days of Jags camp. The Jags have a mass of bodies at receiver, but Westbrook could have some early-season fantasy appeal as a plug-and-play WR4/5.

Responding to Terrelle Pryor's claim that his May ankle issue was a new break, Jets coach Todd Bowles said Pryor should "keep his mouth shut and leave the injuries to me."

Pryor has typically had a difficult time endearing himself to his coaches, so it's notable as he tries to secure his 53-man roster spot. "Just" $1 million of Pryor's $3 million base salary is guaranteed. Pryor, who is coming back from what he says was an injury-ruined 2017 in Washington, was inactive for the Jets' preseason opener. He's also expected to sit out Thursday's game against his old team.

Cameron Meredith has been sidelined with an undisclosed injury.

Meredith, who has missed several days of practice in a row, tweeted about the situation on Tuesday. "So many obstacles on my path, trying to test my perseverance," Meredith said. "No need to fear, my faith is unshaken and I can do all things through Him, for He gives me strength." That doesn't sound the most encouraging, though NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the issue is not with Meredith's surgically-repaired knee. Meredith did not suit up for the Saints' preseason opener, and will undoubtedly sit out Friday's game against the Cardinals.

ESPN's Nick Wagoner reports Marquise Goodwin is "clearly Jimmy Garoppolo's favorite target."

This has been the consistent report out of 49ers camp all August, and it certainly looked that way in limited snaps in the preseason opener. Although Pierre Garcon could develop better rapport with Garoppolo as the month goes on, Goodwin looks like the receiver to roster.

ESPN's Jeff Legwold believes Royce Freeman will be the Broncos' "primary back before too long."

"Now, that might not mean 250 carries," Legwold cautions, "but he's going to get work and already blocks well enough to play on third down and in some of the open formations. And he'll get red zone chances, too." Freeman certainly caught the eye of fantasy players with 38 yards and a touchdown in the preseason opener. Already going in the fourth round, it is possible Freeman is being drafted near his ceiling with Devontae Booker likely to steal touches, but that could change if the rookie has more strong outings this preseason.

Eagles coach Doug Pederson said he is "not sure" where reports about Alshon Jeffery (shoulder) beginning the season on the PUP came from.

Pederson originally said he would not comment on the report, but then he changed his mind. "You know what, I'm not going to comment on that because we're monitoring his progress, it's day-to-day, we're happy where he's at, and we'll continue to do that." Jeffery's Week 1 availability cannot be taken for granted, but it does not sound like he will spend the first six weeks on the PUP.

Eagles coach Doug Pederson said Carson Wentz (knee) will need a week of 11-on-11 work to be ready for Week 1.

Wentz did see work during 11-on-11s early in camp, but the Eagles have since backed him off. On Tuesday during a radio interview, the quarterback said "it's going to be close" when asked about his availability for Week 1, but after practice, he said he hopes to return to 11-on-11 work next week. If that happens, he should be good to go for Week 1.

Eagles coach Doug Pederson said Nelson Agholor is sidelined with a lower-body injury.

Pederson said they are just resting Agholor to have him ready for Week 1, suggesting the injury is not serious. With Alshon Jeffery's (shoulder) status uncertain, Agholor could have a bigger early-season role than expected.

Eagles coach Doug Pederson said Nick Foles (neck) will play in the second preseason game.

Foles sat out some time with spasms in his traps and neck, but the injury was never considered serious. With Carson Wentz (knee) a question for Week 1, Foles could open the season as the starter.
