49ers signed TE Cole Wick, WR DeAndre Carter, FB Malcolm Johnson, OL Andrew Lauderdale, LB Boseko Lokombo, QB Nick Mullens, OT Pace Murphy, DB Trovon Reed and CB Channing Stribling to reserve/future contracts.

A 2016 UDFA, Wick made six appearances for the Lions as a rookie, catching two passes. He will be up against it to crack the 53-man roster next summer.

Sam Darnold completed 8-of-11 passes for 62 yards and an interception in the Jets' second preseason game.

It was a less impressive performance from the rookie than his debut. He struggled a bit with pressure, taking two sacks including a drive-ender in which he held the ball too long, and he was intercepted on a fourth-down play in which he appeared to pre-determine his target and forced the ball into double coverage. He was not helped much by his offensive line, however, and still had a couple nice third-down conversions to Tre McBride. It was a step back, but Darnold still should be the heavy favorite to start Week 1.

Jamaal Williams suffered an ankle injury during the Packers' second preseason game Thursday night.

Williams drew the start for the second game in a row, but he limped off during the second quarter. It is unclear at this point how serious the issue is, but the injury is a blow for a team which will be without Aaron Jones (suspension) to open the season. If Williams is forced to miss significant time, Ty Montgomery could find himself back in a workhorse role.

Nick Foles was forced from Thursday's preseason game against the Patriots with a strained throwing shoulder.

Foles was injured by an awkward hit on an Adrian Clayborn strip sack. Foles immediately went down grabbing his right side. With many of the Eagles' regulars sitting out, Foles looked nothing like his Super Bowl self before going down, completing 3-of-9 passes for 44 yards. He was sacked twice. Were neither Foles nor Carson Wentz to be ready for Week 1, Nate Sudfeld is the Eagles' No. 3 quarterback.

Samaje Perine exited the Redskins' second preseason game with a sprained ankle.

Perine took his first and only carry 30 yards through a big hole, but he came up limping after the play. He appeared to be in considerable pain on the sidelines. Already playing behind Rob Kelley, this injury will make it difficult for Perine to earn a big early-season role. If it ends up being serious, Washington will have to add another running back.

Alex Smith completed 4-of-6 passes for 48 yards in the Redskins' second preseason game.

Smith looked like he had been playing in the offense for years on Thursday night. He found old buddy Vernon Davis for a 16-yard gain, connected with Josh Doctson for 11 to pick up a third down, and would have had a touchdown if Trey Quinn caught the ball. In an offense which made Kirk Cousins a perennial top-ten fantasy quarterback, Smith is a value in the 12th round.

Patriots first-round OL Isaiah Wynn was carted off the field with a left ankle injury in Thursday's preseason game.

Wynn, who is expected to begin the year as a reserve, was at right tackle when he went down. Carts can often be precautionary, but there was no "own power" for Wynn before he was loaded up.

The Athletic's Jeff Howe reports Rex Burkhead's undisclosed injury is minor.

Howe reports there's a "good chance" Burkhead would have suited up for Thursday's game were it a regular season contest. Burkhead has missed four-straight days of practice, but it doesn't sound like that streak will get much longer. With Burkhead and Sony Michel out, James White started against the Eagles.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Packers and Aaron Rodgers are "creeping along" towards a new contract.

Per Schefter, "both sides are still motivated to get it done." Schefter fully expects Rodgers' new contract to make him the highest-paid player in league history. Rodgers turns 35 in December.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports there is "no end in sight" to Khalil Mack's holdout.

Mack will be up to $1.628 million in fines after missing Saturday's second preseason game. Those fines will probably eventually be waived, but the sides seem to have made genuinely no progress. It can't be taken for granted that Mack will be in uniform come Week 1. That would be an unmitigated disaster for the Silver and Black in the first year of Jon Gruden's 10-year, $100 million contract.

Kenny Britt (hamstring) has yet to resume practicing.

Britt is still reeling from an injury he suffered all the way back on June 5. That would imperil your 53-man roster odds anywhere, but especially under coach Bill Belichick. The Pats need Britt's big-bodied presence on the outside, but if he can't show anything on the practice field, he's going to lose out to players like Eric Decker.

Raiders coach Jon Gruden believes Derek Carr has already "mastered" his offense.

"I think he’s one of the best, in terms of processing information," Gruden said of his quarterback. "He wants more… ‘What do we have today? ... He has a photographic memory. It comes so easy to him. He’s got the offense mastered more than I do." Beat writer Scott Bair says this is "evident" in practice. They're just words, but considering Gruden has returned to the NFL playing up his reputation as an old school, hard-nosed coach, it's certainly notable he's already heaping such praise on his quarterback.
