Jets waived/injured WR Devin Smith.

Smith tore his ACL in late April and will spend all of his third NFL season on injured reserve. The 37th overall pick in the 2015 draft, Smith will enter 2018 having appeared in just 14-of-48 possible games. If it makes Jets fans feel any better, Smith was taken just ahead of fellow receiver disappointments Dorial Green-Beckham (No. 40) and Devin Funchess (No. 41).

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy reports Josh Gordon hasn't been cleared to practice.

Gordon is still in Stage 3 of the league's substance abuse program and needs to pass certain conditions before practicing. It's possible not meeting the conditions are why Gordon delayed reporting to training camp. The league "doesn't have a timetable" on Gordon's next step. Gordon can attend meetings and do off-field work, but he's not out of the woods yet.

Josh Gordon has reported to the Browns' training camp.

Gordon is expected to attend practice Sunday after skipping the first three weeks of camp for health reasons. The Browns have supported Gordon throughout the process and are welcoming him back. It's a strange situation that Gordon didn't get help before the preseason, but there's been nothing to suggest he's in trouble with the league. Gordon will be moved slowly but has enough time to be on the field for Week 1. Gordon's return should end Cleveland's pursuit of Dez Bryant.

Carson Wentz (knee) has been cleared for 11-on-11 team drills.

Coach Doug Pederson said Wentz would need at least a week of team drills to be ready for the start of the season. It's an encouraging step for Wentz, though he did some limited team work early in training camp. With Nick Foles sidelined the rest of the preseason, the Eagles are ramping up Wentz's activity. Wentz looks on track for Week 1.

Dalvin Cook (knee) won't play in the Vikings' second preseason game.

Cook was also held out of the preseason opener. The Vikings are avoiding setback risks with Cook 10 months removed from ACL surgery. Cook went through pre-game warmups and has reportedly "looked great" in practice. He should be cleared for the Vikings' dress rehearsal next week.

Cardinals coach Steve Wilks said Christian Kirk has "created some separation" for the No. 2 receiver job.

Chad Williams also drew praise after struggling with training camp drops. Brice Butler's injury was an opportunity for Kirk to do some depth-chart climbing, and he responded by leading the Cardinals in receiving against the Saints. Kirk played with the first-team offense, but scored his touchdown on a highlight from Josh Rosen. The Cardinals are making Kirk compete with middling wideouts behind Larry Fitzgerald, but his starting chances are trending up going into the third preseason game.

ESPN's Mike Rodak believes it's too early to consider Josh Allen a "lock" to start Week 1.

Allen crushed his first two preseason appearances, completing 18-of-32 passes for 176 yards and two touchdowns. He hasn't had many first-team training camp reps but is in the driver seat to start with A.J. McCarron (collarbone) out. Allen still needs to hold off Nathan Peterman — a favorite of coach Sean McDermott. Allen looks likely to start next week's dress rehearsal but both quarterbacks should see time with the top offense.
Aug 18 - 10:17 AM

Christian Kirk caught 4-of-6 passes for 49 yards and a touchdown in the Cardinals' second preseason game.

Kirk scored on an end-zone catch-in-traffic from Josh Rosen on the Cardinals' third series. He showed good rapport with Rosen, also adding a 21-yard catch later in the game. It's a needed breakout after Kirk's quiet preseason debut. With Brice Butler sidelined, Kirk is trending toward opening the year in three-wide sets.

A.J. McCarron suffered a broken collarbone in the Bills' second preseason game against the Browns.

McCarron started the game, went 3-of-6 passing for 12 yards, and is believed to have suffered the injury after taking a hit from behind via Myles Garrett. Collarbone fractures are typically 8-10 week injuries, putting McCarron in contention for one of the Bills' I.R.-designated for return slots around midseason. This injury essentially locks in first-rounder Josh Allen as the Week 1 starter.

Wayne Gallman went for 26 yards and a touchdown on five carries while snagging two catches for nine yards and another touchdown Friday in New York’s second preseason game against the Lions.

Gallman was the second Giants’ ball-carrier to enter the game following veteran Jonathan Stewart (second overall pick Saquon Barkley sat out with a hamstring injury). The 2017 fourth-rounder squandered a goal-line opportunity in the second quarter, losing two yards on the play. However, he made up for that gaffe two plays later by corralling an eight-yard touchdown pass from Davis Webb on third-and-goal. Gallman went back for seconds in the fourth quarter, turning an 11-yard carry from Kyle Lauletta into his second touchdown of the night. Obviously Gallman poses no threat to Barkley, but he could push Stewart for backup reps this year.
Aug 17 - 10:09 PM

Josh Allen completed 9-of-13 passes for 60 yards and a touchdown in Friday's preseason versus the Browns.

Allen's 4.6 yards per attempt don't do his performance justice as Allen led the Bills on scoring drives on all three of his possessions. The first was a 15-play, 80-yard drive which ended in a 2-yard touchdown strike to Rod Streater where Allen climbed the pocket on third down to put the Bills on the scoreboard. Allen managed the pocket well and frequently extended plays with his legs, adding 18 yards on three rushing attempts. Playing with the second-team offense, Allen should be promoted to the first team with the injury to AJ McCarron. He's looking like a lock to open the year as the starter.
Aug 17 - 9:53 PM

Calvin Ridley caught 3-of-5 passes for 49 yards and a touchdown in the Falcons' second preseason game.

Ridley was Atlanta's No. 1 receiver with Julio Jones sitting out. He played with the starters, but his touchdown came with Matt Schaub in. The Falcons are counting on Ridley for a big rookie-year role in what should be one of the league's highest scoring offenses. Ridley is going to see a lot of single coverage opposite Jones.
