Jamie McMurray was the only non-playoff driver to advance to the final round of qualification for the South Point 400. He slapped the wall in round three, however, and will roll off the grid 12th.

Keep an eye out for updates because he hit the wall pretty hard and may need to roll out a backup. McMurray has been one of our favorites among non-playoff drivers all week.

Joey Logano has scored four results of eighth or better in five races at Miami with Team Penske. He finished with a career-best of fourth in back-to-back races in 2015 and 2016.

The best news for Logano is that this team has had an opportunity to prepare for this race since they qualified for the Championship 4 with a Martinsville win. The bad news is that Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch have much better records on the track.

Martin Truex has earned only one top-five with Furniture Row Racing in four attempts with his current team. That was last year's victory that awarded him the championship.

Truex's three previous attempts with Furniture Row netted only one more top-15, so it is difficult to think of him as the favorite this week. On the other hand, he has been almost perfect on 1.5-mile tracks in the past two years.
Nov 12 - 3:05 PM

Kevin Harvick has a near-perfect record of top-10s at Miami with 14 such finishes in 15 starts.

Harvick won the 2014 Ford 400 and has not finished worse than fourth since. He has three second-place finishes (2003, 2008, and 2015) and is the most recent winner on a 1.5-mile track - although his Texas win was encumbered. Harvick has to be one of the favorites to win the championship next week.
Nov 12 - 3:01 PM

Austin Dillon is closing in on a top-10 at Homestead-Miami Speedway with a three-race streak of top-15s in the past three years.

His last three finishes at Miami have gotten progressively better with a 14th in 2015, a 12th the next year, and an 11th last year. Dillon has run consistently well this year and finally earned back-to-back top-10s for the first time in 2018 with an eighth at Phoenix and 10th at Texas. He could close out the season on a high note.
Nov 12 - 2:56 PM

Kyle Busch has earned five top-10s in this last six races at Homestead-Miami Speedway, including a championship winning victory in 2015.

Last year, Busch came up one position short and finished second to Martin Truex Jr. Having qualified for the finale once more in 2018, Busch is going to be one of the primary threats this week along with Truex and Kevin Harvick.
Nov 12 - 2:51 PM

Ryan Blaney has lost positions at Homestead-Miami Speedway in all three races he started.

With a worst starting position of 11th, Blaney has lost nearly 16 positions in each Homestead race. Last year, he fell 18 positions to finish 29th - three laps off the pace.
Nov 12 - 2:47 PM

Kurt Busch was involved in an accident with Denny Hamlin on Lap 272 of the Can-Am 500k at ISM Raceway and was unable to continue in the race. He retired in 32nd.

Busch was gambling on old tires at the time while most of the field pitted, but that was not his undoing. Hamlin simply overdrove the corner and "cleaned him out," according to Busch. The king of consistency in 2018 was eliminated with a rare bad finish.
Nov 11 - 9:42 PM

Chase Elliott was involved in a Lap 272 crash in the Can-Am 500k with Kurt Busch and Denny Hamlin. He lost three laps making repairs and finished 23rd and failed to advance to the Championship 4.

Elliott entered the race with six top-10s in his last seven attempts and had enough momentum to seriously challenge the Big 3 for a spot in the finale. He was caught speeding in Stage 3 of the race and struggled to regain track position. That single mistake proved to be his undoing.
Nov 11 - 9:30 PM

Bubba Wallace scored his first top-10 since week seven of the 2018 season. He finished 10th in the Can-Am 500k at ISM Raceway.

This was Wallace's third top-10 of the season on three different track types. He finished second on the plate track of Daytona in the opener, was seventh at Texas on a 1.5-miler, and now has a 10th on the short flat track of Phoenix.
Nov 11 - 9:07 PM

With his ninth-place finish in the Can-Am 500k at ISM Raceway, William Byron clinched 2018 Rookie of the Year honors.

This is the fourth consecutive year in which Byron won Rookie of the Year honors. He won in the K&N East series, Truck series, and Xfinity series in the last three years. Still, top-10s have been too infrequent this year for Byron to be a good fantasy value.
Nov 11 - 8:57 PM

Austin Dillon finished eighth in the Can-Am 500k at ISM Raceway on the heels of a 10th at Texas Motor Speedway.

This is the first time in 2018 that Dillon has been able to back up one top-10 with another. Dillon has finished 17th or better in 10 of the last 14 races, however, to indicate that this team is making some steps in the right direction as they head into the off-season.
