Kyle Busch has recorded five wins in his last eight short track starts.

Included in Busch's five wins in his last eight short track starts are victories in last year's edition of the First Data 500 and in the most recent event at Richmond Raceway in race two of Round 1.

Chase Elliott has finished second, third, and fourth in his last three short track starts. That indicates he is closing in on his first short track victory.

If not for contact from Denny Hamlin in the closing laps of last year's fall Martinsville Speedway race, he would already have a short track win to his credit. Last year, he missed the playoffs after getting wrecked on the paperclip and he knows the importance of getting off to a strong start in Round 3 of the playoffs.

Jimmie Johnson has not finished outside of the top 15 in his last 15 attempts on short tracks - including wins at Martinsville in 2016 and Bristol last year.

That gives Johnson a top-15 average of 94.1 percent. His top-10 average is only 58.8 percent, but given the struggles he has survived this year and a modest salary cap that goes along with that, he is one of the better values in play heading into the First Data 500 at Martinsville Speedway.

Clint Bowyer enters the weekend with a six-race streak of top-10 on short tracks of less than a mile in length.

Bowyer finished third in last year's edition of the First Data 500. He snapped a winless streak that extended to 2012 on at Martinsville this spring. And while another win might is difficult to predict, he has earned four top-10s in his last four short track starts.
