Evan Drellich of NBC Boston reports that Logan Morrison and the Red Sox "have been in touch recently."

Drellich notes that the Red Sox are still viewing J.D. Martinez as their No. 1 priority, but "there is groundwork for alternatives." Morrison looks like a good backup plan and would obviously come at a much cheaper price than Martinez. The former Ray batted .246/.353/.516 with a career-high 38 home runs last season.

Buster Posey (hip) is expected to play Wednesday.

John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reported Tuesday evening that Posey is facing season-ending hip surgery to repair his labrum and clean out bone spurs, but that procedure apparently won't happen right away as the Giants don't want to wave the white flag on 2018 just yet. They're currently 7 1/2 games back of the Diamondbacks for first place in the National League West standings and seven games out of the crowded hunt for the second National League Wild Card slot. Nick Hundley is starting behind the plate for the Giants on Tuesday versus the Mets.
Aug 21 - 8:04 PM

Angels placed OF Justin Upton on the 10-day disabled list with a left index finger laceration.

That explains his absence from the Angels' starting lineup for Tuesday night's series opener against the Diamondbacks. Upton sliced his finger on a wine glass at his home in Arizona on Sunday night and needed four stitches. It's unclear how long he might be sidelined. Jabari Blash will be called up from Triple-A Salt Lake in a corresponding move.
Aug 21 - 7:23 PM

George Springer (quad) remains out of the Astros' starting lineup on Tuesday.

Springer was scratched from Monday's series opener at Seattle's Safeco Field due to soreness in his left quadriceps. He is still considered day-to-day. Tony Kemp will start in center field and bat ninth Tuesday versus Mariners right-hander Mike Leake.
Aug 21 - 7:15 PM

Nelson Cruz is out of the Mariners' starting lineup on Tuesday due to back spasms.

The veteran slugger is considered day-to-day. Robinson Cano will serve as the Mariners' DH and bat second Tuesday night against the Astros, who are starting Brad Peacock in what will essentially be a bullpen game.
Aug 21 - 6:42 PM

Nationals activated RHP Kelvin Herrera from the 10-day disabled list.

Herrera will be available out of the Nationals' bullpen on Tuesday night against the Phillies after missing two weeks with a right rotator cuff impingement. He could immediately jump back into the fill-in closer role, pushing Koda Glover into more of a setup gig. Sean Doolittle (foot) seems to be a couple weeks away still.
Aug 21 - 6:28 PM

Astros activated 2B Jose Altuve from the 10-day disabled list.

Altuve will return to the Astros' starting lineup on Tuesday night in Seattle after missing a little under a month with right knee discomfort. The star second baseman was batting .329/.392/.464 with nine home runs, 46 RBI, 14 stolen bases, and 64 runs scored in 104 games before the injury.
Aug 21 - 6:19 PM

Craig Mish of SiriusXM reports that Starlin Castro has cleared revocable trade waivers.

Castro is now eligible to be dealt to any team, and there would seem to be a pretty good chance that the Marlins can find a trade partner for him. The 28-year-old second baseman currently ranks fifth in the National League with 139 hits. He is making $10.86 million this season, is owed $11.86 million in 2019, and carries a $16 million team option (or $1 million buyout) for 2020.
Aug 21 - 6:17 PM

Matt Carpenter is getting the night off Tuesday against the Dodgers.

It's just a routine breather for the MVP candidate. Jose Martinez will start at first base and hit leadoff versus Dodgers left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu.
Aug 21 - 6:12 PM

Joey Votto (leg) is hoping to be activated from the disabled list when first eligible on Sunday.

Votto has been out since August 16 with a right lower leg contusion that actually dates back to a hit-by-pitch on August 4. He told reporters Tuesday that he's feeling better after several days of rest. The star first baseman has the goods to put up big fantasy numbers down the stretch in a pretty good Reds lineup.
Aug 21 - 6:06 PM

Starling Marte remains out of the Pirates' starting lineup on Tuesday against the Braves.

Marte got benched Monday for showing a lack of effort on Sunday, and his absence Tuesday is apparently for a doctor's appointment, though manager Clint Hurdle declined to elaborate. Adam Frazier is in center field and batting second for the Pirates on Tuesday night versus Braves right-hander Kevin Gausman.
Aug 21 - 5:42 PM

Yu Darvish is done for the season after an MRI showed a stress reaction on the tip of his right elbow and a strain in his right triceps.

Darvish was sent for the MRI after leaving his rehab start Sunday at Low-A South Bend after pitching just one inning. Signed to a six-year, $126 million free agent contract over the winter, the 32-year-old right-hander made only eight starts for Chicago this season, to the tune of a 4.95 ERA and 1.43 WHIP. He should be ready for the beginning of spring training next February and will look to hit the reset button on his Cubs tenure.
