MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez reports that the Braves have expressed "serious interest" in Eduardo Nunez.

Nunez could take over as the Braves' starting third baseman, shifting Johan Camargo to a utility role. Atlanta thinks that third base prospect Austin Riley could be ready to take over at the hot corner as soon as 2019, but Nunez has the flexibility to move to another position or become a super utility player if need be. The Rays, Yankees and Red Sox are also in on the 30-year-old.

Trevor Cahill threw seven shutout innings, allowing a lone hit while striking out seven, to lead the Athletics to 7-1 win over the Astros on Saturday.

Making arguably the biggest start of his season to date, Cahill responded with a brilliant showing against the team the A's were, until Saturday, chasing in the AL West standings. He gave up just one single and issued a solitary walk over his seven innings, striking out Marwin Gonzalez to end the seventh inning with his 100th pitch of the afternoon. With the stellar turn, Cahill is now 5-2 with a 3.12 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 85/25 K/BB ratio over 15 starts this year. The Twins will try to crack the right-hander when the two sides meet Thursday.

Shohei Ohtani (elbow) threw 20 fastballs in a light bullpen session Saturday.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia said the next step is likely facing live hitters in his next workout in Arizona. Ohtani is managing a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow that was diagnosed earlier this year. He's moving in the right direction and has been able to hit throughout his rehab, but with time running out it's still unclear whether he'll make it back in time to pitch for the Halos again this year.
Aug 18 - 6:59 PM

Alex Cobb largely breezed through the AL Central-leading Indians on Saturday, allowing two runs in a complete-game, 4-2 win.

Cobb gave up five hits and a walk while striking out three, needing exactly 100 pitches to complete his nine innings. Only a two-run sixth inning, in which the Indians strung together three consecutive singles, marred his afternoon. Cobb has somewhat quietly been pretty good in the season's second half and has lowered his ERA to 5.09 -- a testament to how bad he was in the first half -- in 23 starts overall. He'll look to keep rolling along Friday when the Orioles face the Yankees.
Aug 18 - 6:44 PM

Jose Martinez was scratched from the Cardinals' lineup Saturday due to right hip tightness.

He was replaced in the field and in the batting order by Tyler O'Neill. The injury doesn't sound overly concerning, so he should be back in there in a day or two. Still, it's a situation to monitor.

Mike Trout (wrist) is not expected to rejoin the Angels until the next homestand.

The Angels are on the road until Friday, so they're not expecting him back for close to a week. Trout was originally expected to return from the disabled list when first eligible last week, but he left the team when his 24-year-old brother-in-law passed away suddenly Wednesday morning. The Angels are obviously going to give their superstar all the time he needs during this tragedy.

Jimmy Nelson (shoulder) threw a bullpen session Saturday.

"I’m still doing everything in my power" to return this season, he told MLB.com's Adam McCalvy. The bullpen, the first documented session in his return from major shoulder surgery last September, is certainly a step in the right direction, but time continues to tick as he races against the clock for a return in 2018. Any contribution this year from the right-hander would be welcome for the Brewers at this point.
Aug 18 - 5:43 PM

Stephen Strasburg (neck) threw 42 or 43 pitches in a bullpen session Saturday and came out of it well, Nationals manager Dave Martinez said.

The only question remaining is where Strasburg will make his start Tuesday, with the Nationals or on a rehab assignment. Martinez said that's still being decided. Either way, he's almost certainly going to be back some time this week, a big boost to the Nats as they fight for a playoff spot. Strasburg has made just one start since June 8.

Adrian Beltre (hamstring) is in the lineup for the Rangers' game Saturday against the Angels.

Beltre had sat out all the team's games since Monday with a hamstring issue, but he took batting practice ahead of Friday's game and was deemed good to go for Saturday. That's good news for both the Rangers and fantasy owners, as another day or two and he'd have likely been looking at a DL stint. The veteran is batting third and serving as the team's designated hitter for Saturday's contest.
Aug 18 - 4:17 PM

Eric Thames (knee) is out of the Brewers' starting lineup on Saturday against the Cardinals.

Thames injured his right knee in a collision with Lorenzo Cain on Friday night. It's unclear if this is more than a day-to-day situation. Jesus Aguilar is at first base and batting cleanup Saturday versus Cardinals right-hander Miles Mikolas.
Aug 18 - 3:59 PM

Red Sox placed LHP Chris Sale on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to August 15, with left shoulder inflammation.

Sale looked sharp in his first start back from the DL last Sunday, striking out 12 batters and yielding only one single over five scoreless frames against the Orioles, but this shoulder issue continues to plague him. It's unclear when he might be ready to return. Sale missed two-and-a-half weeks last time around.
Aug 18 - 2:30 PM

Jose Altuve (knee) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Sunday with Triple-A Fresno.

Fresno is on the road at Triple-A Tacoma, and Altuve could potentially rejoin the Astros in Seattle on Monday. The star second baseman has been out since July 26 with discomfort in his right knee.
