According to Darren Wilson of ESPN 1500 in Minneapolis, the Twins have submitted a formal offer to free agent starter Yu Darvish.

The exact specifics of the offer are unknown, but Wolfson says on the latest episode of his podcast that it is believed to be four or five years in length. He also mentions that the Twins are reluctant at this point to push that offer to six years. Earlier on Wednesday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported that Darvish has "several" offers on the table worth more than $100 million, and USA Today's Bob Nightengale mentioned that a number of them are in the five-year range. We could finally be seeing some progress with the top starting pitcher on the market, and Minnesota might have a real shot here. The Cubs, Brewers, Dodgers, and Yankees are also thought to be in pursuit of the 31-year-old right-hander.

Chris Archer was lifted from Monday's start versus the Braves with left leg discomfort.

Archer appeared to have tweaked something while he was batting. The Pirates are deeming his exiting precautionary, so it seems safe to call the right-hander day-to-day. Archer allowed one run on five hits and one walk over four innings of work before being pulled.

Jose Altuve (knee) is set to be activated from the disabled list Tuesday.

That had been the indication and Astros manager A.J. Hinch confirmed as much Monday. Altuve played in one rehab game Sunday, singling and getting hit by a pitch in his four plate appearances. The second baseman has been sidelined since late July with right knee discomfort.

George Springer was scratched from the Astros' lineup Monday due to left quad soreness.

Manager A.J. Hinch indicated that Springer would be available off the bench, so it appears that the club is just being overly cautious here. Tyler White entered the lineup in Springer's place.

MLB.com's Greg Johns writes that the Mariners could be shooting for the August 30-September 2 series versus the Athletics for James Paxton's (forearm) return.

Paxton played catch for the second straight day Monday and is expected to throw off a mound next. He's eligible for activation from the disabled list on Saturday, but it sounds like it will likely be about a week after that when he returns. Paxton landed on the DL last week with a left forearm contusion after he was struck by a line drive.

Shohei Ohtani (elbow) threw a 29-pitch simulated game on Monday.

Ohtani faced both right- and left-handed hitters and "all went well," according to the Angels. Things continue to progress in a positive direction as he tries to pitch with a partially torn right ulnar collateral ligament. The Angels have said previously that Ohtani will not pitch in the minors during his rehab, which means it might not be long before he rejoins the rotation even if it's on a limited pitch count initially. A lengthier simulated game figures to be next on the docket.

Dodgers activated RHP Kenley Jansen from the 10-day disabled list.

Jansen visited a cardiologist on Monday and was given clearance to return to action. He is no longer on blood thinners but is still taking heart medication and is expected to require another surgery over the offseason. However, Jansen is all systems go now following a two-week absence because of an irregular heartbeat. The closer was initially given a 4-6 week timetable but it's looked for the last week like he was going to easily beat that.

Manny Machado (wrist) is in the Dodgers' lineup Monday.

Machado exited Sunday's game after he was hit on the left wrist by a pitch, but X-rays came back clean and he's back in there a day later. He's at shortstop and batting third against Austin Gomber and the Cardinals.
Aug 20 - 6:22 PM

Indians manager Terry Francona said Monday that he expects Edwin Encarnacion (hand) to be activated from the disabled list by "mid-week."

Encarnacion is taking batting practice Monday and is eligible for activation Tuesday, but it sounds like his return will come at least a day after that. The veteran slugger has been sidelined for the last week and a half with a bruised right hand and strained left biceps, with the former injury proving to be the bigger obstacle.
Aug 20 - 6:20 PM

Chris Sale (shoulder) will not be activated from the disabled list when first eligible on Saturday.

Sale has yet to resume a throwing program after landing back on the DL over the weekend, with Red Sox manager Alex Cora saying only that the left-hander is in "good spirits." Boston looks like they're going to cruise to the American League East title, so expect them to be cautious with their ace following two shoulder-related DL stints over the last three weeks.

Dereck Rodriguez (hamstring) will rejoin the Giants' rotation Friday against the Rangers.

Rodriguez strained his right hamstring last week during the Giants' skirmish with the Dodgers, but he's evidently made a rapid recovery and will slide back into San Francisco's rotation without a rehab start. Pudge's son is sporting a nifty 2.25 ERA over 14 appearances -- 12 starts -- for the Giants this season.

Orioles placed OF/DH Mark Trumbo on the 10-day disabled list with right knee inflammation.

The knee has been bothering Trumbo dating back to May and recently became too painful to deal with. The O's are merely calling the injury inflammation for now, but they don't have the MRI results yet so how much time Trumbo will miss is still up in the air.
