According to Andy McCullough of the Los Angeles Times, Yu Darvish "has made clear he would like to return to the Dodgers."

McCullough says "part of the delay in his free agency is related to waiting to see if the [Dodgers] can move some of the money" that might allow them to re-sign Darvish and still remain under the luxury tax threshold for 2018. That could be a tall task, but McCullough adds that "extraneous assets such as Yasmani Grandal, Logan Forsythe and Hyun-Jin Ryu" have all been shopped in recent weeks. Darvish is also known to be drawing free agent interest from the Twins, Cubs, Brewers, Yankees, and Rangers. The waiting game continues.

Astros manager A.J. Hinch said Friday that Jose Altuve (knee) could go out on a minor league rehab assignment this weekend with Triple-A Fresno.

Great news. Altuve took batting practice and did some sprints on Friday, after which he told reporters that it was his best day since injuring his knee. If all goes well, Altuve could rejoin the Astros during their series against the Mariners early next week.

Yasiel Puig is appealing his two-game suspension.

Puig isn't in Friday's lineup, which led to some speculation that he decided to serve the suspension which resulted from Tuesday's benches-clearing skirmish with the Giants, but he will be available off the bench.
Aug 17 - 8:11 PM

Jose Urena said Friday that he's appealing his six-game suspension for hitting Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna.

Urena said again Friday that he didn't intend to hit Acuna. He only threw one pitch before being tossed on Wednesday, so Marlins manager Don Mattingly hasn't ruled out the possibility of him starting Sunday against the Nationals. Otherwise, he'll likely line up to face the Yankees on Tuesday or Wednesday. Speculation is that he'll eventually drop his appeal in order to avoid a series against the Braves next weekend.

Dee Gordon will make the start at shortstop Friday against the Dodgers with Jean Segura away on the paternity list.

It will be his first start at shortstop this season. Gordon has now started at three different positions in the last three games. He should go back to splitting time between second base and center field once Segura returns in the next couple of days.

Michael Wacha (oblique) is headed to High-A Palm Beach to begin a rehab assignment.

The exact date of his first rehab start hasn't been revealed, but it sounds like it will be in the next few days. Wacha has been on the shelf since late June with a strained left oblique but has been throwing off a mound for the last week with no issues. He will require multiple rehab starts before rejoining the Cardinals' rotation.
Aug 17 - 5:26 PM

Astros activated OF George Springer from the 10-day disabled list.

Springer needed just a minimum stay on the DL because of a minor left thumb sprain. He'll be back in action this weekend for the Astros' big series against the Athletics in Oakland.
Aug 17 - 5:21 PM

Ryan Braun (rib cage) is not in the Brewers' lineup Friday.

Braun left Wednesday's game with tightness in his rib cage and Thursday's off day apparently wasn't enough for him to heal up. He will take some swings pregame Friday and expects to know more about his availability then. Eric Thames will get a start in the outfield.

RotoGrinders.com Daily Slant: Braun will take a day off with a rib injury, and Jesus Aguilar will return to his cleanup spot. Facing a tough pitcher on the road, Aguilar will likely be less than 5% owned across all of DFS, making him a strong tournament play today. Aguilar is hitting .281 off righties and 22 of his 29 HR's this year have come off righties. If you want a high upside bat that no one will have, Aguilar is an intriguing option tonight.
Aug 17 - 5:11 PM

Edwin Encarnacion (hand) is unlikely to be activated when first eligible Tuesday as initially hoped.

Encarnacion is coming back from a bruised right hand and strained left biceps. He's no longer feeling symptoms in his biceps but his hand is apparently still tender. The hope is that he'll be ready to take batting practice on Sunday or Monday. While he won't return when first eligible, he would seem to have a shot to be activated sometime next week if all goes well.
Aug 17 - 4:48 PM

Aaron Judge (wrist) played catch Friday.

There's a chance he could also take some dry swings Friday. The Yankees had initially hoped Judge would miss only three weeks of action with a right wrist fracture, but he's already at the three-week mark now. A return before the end of the month seems unlikely, but at least he's finally making progress.
Aug 17 - 4:41 PM

Cubs placed LHP Mike Montgomery on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to August 14, with left shoulder inflammation.

Montgomery felt discomfort during his bullpen session Thursday, leading to the move. Tyler Chatwood will start in his place Saturday and could easily get additional turns while Montgomery recovers.
Aug 17 - 4:25 PM

Indians manager Terry Francona said Friday that Trevor Bauer (leg) could return to game action in 4-6 weeks.

It sounds like that would be a best-case scenario, so Bauer making it back at all next month still looks to be up in the air. The right-hander is recovering from a stress fracture in his right fibula and is in a walking boot, although he did do some throwing from his knees Friday.
