Twins signed INF/OF Jermaine Curtis to a minor league contract.

Curtis, 30, hit .296/.412/.374 with one homer between Double- and Triple-A in the A's organization last season. He hasn't appeared in the majors since a cup of coffee in 2013.

Joe Musgrove held the Cubs to one run in seven innings and was credited with a win on Saturday.

He struck out seven batters without issuing a free pass. He surrendered five hits, including a solo shot by Ben Zobrist for the only blemish on his boxscore. This makes five consecutive quality starts for Musgrove as he heads down the stretch in his first season with the Pirates after coming over in the Gerrit Cole trade with the Astros. He will try to keep the momentum going when he puts his 5-7 record and 3.31 ERA on the line against the Brewers on Friday.
Aug 18 - 10:58 PM

Miles Mikolas spun six innings of one-run ball in a 7-2 win over the Brewers on Saturday.

Mikolas gave up a solo homer to Travis Shaw in the second inning, but he was able to hold the Brewers off the board the rest of the way. He gave up just five hits on the night while walking none and striking out seven. The 29-year-old has won five straight decisions and now sits at 13-3 with a 2.85 ERA across 25 starts. Only four pitchers in the NL have a better ERA. He’s been quite the find for St. Louis.
Aug 18 - 10:54 PM

Matt Harvey tossed 6 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball and earned a win over the Giants on Saturday.

He sprinkled four hits -- all singles -- and one walk while striking out five batters in the gem outing. He was in control all night and the Giants were unable to mount any serious threats against him. Harvey improves to 6-7 on the season with a 4.91 ERA in 21 starts and four relief appearances with the Reds and Mets. He had a 7.00 ERA in 27 innings with the Mets and has a 4.28 ERA in 90 1/3 innings with the Reds. He is a free agent after the season.
Aug 18 - 10:24 PM

J.D. Martinez slugged his MLB-leading 38th homer in Saturday’s win over the Rays.

He pulled ahead of Cleveland’s Jose Ramirez with a solo shot against Tyler Glasnow in the third inning. Martinez also drew a walk, stole a base, and scored a run in the first inning. The 30-year-old has hit safely in six straight games and owns a monster .333/.404/.667 batting line on the year.
Aug 18 - 10:08 PM

Kolten Wong left Saturday's game against the Brewers with a right elbow contusion.

Wong was hit in the elbow by an errant Wade Miley pickoff attempt in the bottom of the third inning. He stayed in to run the bases, but was replaced by Greg Garcia at second base in the top half of the next inning. The Cardinals should have an update after the game.
Aug 18 - 8:27 PM

Jacob deGrom struck out nine batters and allowed only an unearned run in a 3-1 complete-game win over the Phillies on Saturday.

He kept the Phillies' bats quiet all afternoon by scattering seven harmless hits and he avoided issuing a base-on-balls in the sterling effort. He finally got his record over the .500 mark at 8-7 and lowered his league-leading ERA to 1.71 after 25 starts. He crossed the 200 strikeout mark for the third time in his career and now has 204 punchouts against just 36 walks in 168 innings. The complete game was his first of the season and third of his career. It was his own error that led to the unearned run. He will square off against Madison Bumgarner and the Giants on Thursday.
Aug 18 - 8:25 PM

Trevor Cahill threw seven shutout innings, allowing a lone hit while striking out seven, to lead the Athletics to 7-1 win over the Astros on Saturday.

Making arguably the biggest start of his season to date, Cahill responded with a brilliant showing against the team the A's were, until Saturday, chasing in the AL West standings. He gave up just one single and issued a solitary walk over his seven innings, striking out Marwin Gonzalez to end the seventh inning with his 100th pitch of the afternoon. With the stellar turn, Cahill is now 5-2 with a 3.12 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 85/25 K/BB ratio over 15 starts this year. The Twins will try to crack the right-hander when the two sides meet Thursday.
Aug 18 - 7:05 PM

Shohei Ohtani (elbow) threw 20 fastballs in a light bullpen session Saturday.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia said the next step is likely facing live hitters in his next workout in Arizona. Ohtani is managing a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow that was diagnosed earlier this year. He's moving in the right direction and has been able to hit throughout his rehab, but with time running out it's still unclear whether he'll make it back in time to pitch for the Halos again this year.
Aug 18 - 6:59 PM

Alex Cobb largely breezed through the AL Central-leading Indians on Saturday, allowing two runs in a complete-game, 4-2 win.

Cobb gave up five hits and a walk while striking out three, needing exactly 100 pitches to complete his nine innings. Only a two-run sixth inning, in which the Indians strung together three consecutive singles, marred his afternoon. Cobb has somewhat quietly been pretty good in the season's second half and has lowered his ERA to 5.09 -- a testament to how bad he was in the first half -- in 23 starts overall. He'll look to keep rolling along Friday when the Orioles face the Yankees.
Aug 18 - 6:44 PM

Jose Martinez was scratched from the Cardinals' lineup Saturday due to right hip tightness.

He was replaced in the field and in the batting order by Tyler O'Neill. The injury doesn't sound overly concerning, so he should be back in there in a day or two. Still, it's a situation to monitor.
Aug 18 - 6:06 PM

Mike Trout (wrist) is not expected to rejoin the Angels until the next homestand.

The Angels are on the road until Friday, so they're not expecting him back for close to a week. Trout was originally expected to return from the disabled list when first eligible last week, but he left the team when his 24-year-old brother-in-law passed away suddenly Wednesday morning. The Angels are obviously going to give their superstar all the time he needs during this tragedy.
