Red Sox and LHP Eduardo Rodriguez avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $2.375 million contract.

Rodriguez was eligible for arbitration for the first time as a Super 2 qualifier. The southpaw held a 4.19 ERA across 137 1/3 innings in 2017 and will get a late start to 2018 following October knee surgery.

Jose Bautista drove in a career-high seven of the Mets’ 24 runs Thursday in a lopsided win over Philadelphia.

This one got pretty ugly as the Phillies had position players (Roman Quinn and Scott Kingery) pitch the last three innings. Bautista didn’t even start Thursday’s action but entered the game in the third inning following a hand injury to Brandon Nimmo. Bautista put the game out of reach in the fifth, chasing starter Ranger Suarez from the game with an RBI single before belting a grand slam to left field off Mark Leiter Jr. That capped a 10-run fifth inning for the Mets. Joey Bats drove in another run with a bases-loaded walk in the eighth before finishing the afternoon with an RBI double in the ninth. Bautista’s seven RBI Thursday were more than he had in his previous 20 games COMBINED. Just remarkable.

Kevin Plawecki delivered four hits Thursday in New York’s win over the Phillies.

Just when you think you’ve seen everything. The Mets, who have been among the worst teams in baseball this year, erupted for 24 runs in Thursday’s slugfest, an absolutely stunning result for a Phillies team coming off a series split with Boston. Plawecki, who has been a disaster offensively this year, could do no wrong on Thursday. He reached in all six trips to the plate, walking twice (once intentionally) while delivering three RBI and three runs scored. Plawecki finished a home run shy of the cycle. Thursday was the catcher's first multi-hit game in over a month.

Amed Rosario exploded for four hits including his sixth home run of the year Thursday in New York’s 24-4 victory over the Phillies.

Rosario got the Mets off to a good start with a leadoff homer to begin the game. He was at it again in the third, delivering an RBI single before touching home later in the frame on a bases-loaded walk by Todd Frazier. Rosario added to his big day with an infield single in the fourth, a steal and a run scored in the fifth and a leadoff single in the eighth. He scored four runs and drove in three of his own. The shortstop has swung a hot bat recently, batting .393 (11-for-28) over his last six games while raising his season average from .230 to a slightly more tolerable .242.

Wil Myers is not in the Padres' lineup Thursday against the Diamondbacks.

It appears to be a routine day off for Myers, who has struck out in six of 10 at-bats since coming off the disabled list earlier this week. Travis Jankowski will take over in left field and bat leadoff Thursday against D'Backs right-hander Clay Buchholz.

MLB suspended Marlins RHP Jose Urena six games for intentional throwing at Ronald Acuna Wednesday against the Braves.

He's also been fined an undisclosed amount. Urena blatantly threw at Acuna, who had been riding a five-game home run streak (which is still in tact), setting off a bench-clearing brawl between the two teams. Acuna left the game with an elbow injury but returned to the Braves' lineup the following day. Frankly, it seems like Urena got off easy. The right-hander plans to appeal his suspension, though he will almost certainly lose.

Yu Darvish (elbow) will make a minor league rehab start on Sunday.

The Cubs haven't said where he'll be rehabbing but obviously this is great news for Darvish, who has missed much of the season with nagging elbow and triceps injuries. The right-hander will likely need multiple rehab starts to build up his pitch count after missing so much time. Darvish has won just one game since joining the Cubs on a six-year, $126 million deal last offseason.

Stephen Strasburg (neck) will throw another bullpen session on Saturday.

Assuming all goes well, this will be Strasburg's final tuneup before rejoining the Nats' rotation Tuesday against the Phillies. Neck and shoulder ailments have limited the All-Star to just one start since June 8. Strasburg's return should give the Nationals a huge boost as they look to make up ground in the NL Wild Card race.

X-rays on Brandon Nimmo's left index finger came back negative.

Nimmo appeared to be in considerable pain after taking a pitch off his left hand in the first game of Thursday's doubleheader against Philadelphia, but fortunately, it looks like he escaped without a major injury. The 25-year-old had been scorching hot, reaching base in 10 straight plate appearances prior to getting hurt. Consider him day-to-day.

Brandon Nimmo left Thursday's game against the Phillies with a left finger injury.

The injury occurred in the third inning when Ranger Suarez's 90 mph fastball struck Nimmo's left finger while also making contact with his bat. He grounded out on the play, which ended his streak of reaching base in 10 straight plate appearances. Jose Bautista came on to replace Nimmo in right field.
Aug 16 - 5:10 PM

MLB suspended Dodgers OF Yasiel Puig two games for "fighting and inciting a bench-clearing incident" Tuesday against the Giants.

He had words with Nick Hundley during his at-bat in the seventh inning and later shoved the Giants catcher, leading to a bench-clearing brawl as both players were ejected. The league didn't suspend Hundley, though he has been fined for his role in Tuesday's melee. Puig is appealing the ban and will be available for the Dodgers' next game Friday against Seattle.
Aug 16 - 5:03 PM

Charlie Blackmon is not in the Rockies' lineup Thursday against the Braves.

Blackmon has had a rough week, going 3-for-23 with six strikeouts over his last six games while seeing his average dip from .281 to .273. He'll get a night off to recharge the batteries while David Dahl fills in at center field. Dahl will hit leadoff against Julio Teheran in Thursday night's opener.
