Jharel Cotton (elbow) threw a successful bullpen session Saturday.

Cotton is done for the season, but getting through an extended bullpen session with no issues gives himself and the A's comfort that the righty's elbow is OK going into the offseason. He'll be in the running for a rotation spot in 2018 even after a disappointing 5.58 ERA over 24 starts in 2017.

Giants activated RHP Hunter Strickland from the 60-day disabled list.

Strickland has been on the shelf since June 19 with a fractured right hand, but he pitched well in his rehab appearances, allowing just one run over 5 2/3 innings with 10 strikeouts. To make room on the roster, the Giants transferred Pablo Sandoval to the 60-day disabled list. Strickland may not get save opportunities right away, but he if he pitches well, he should have a chance to pitch as the stopper before the season ends.

Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com reports that Blue Jays manager John Gibbons "all but confirmed" that Marcus Stroman (blister) will head to the disabled list.

Gibbons mentioned that it was possible that Stroman would head to the disabled list because of the blister on Friday, and it certainly appears that will be the case. Thomas Pannone will start in Stroman's place on Wednesday against the Orioles. The 27-year-old has struggled in 2018 with a 5.27 ERA and 1.440 WHIP over 100 2/3 innings, although the advanced statistics say that Stroman has pitched better than those numbers suggest.

Ian Desmond went 3-for-5 with five RBI, a stolen base and a run scored to spearhead Friday's 11-5 thrashing of the Braves.

He came up with the bases loaded in the third inning and boomed a three-run triple. He added a two-run single in the eighth as the Rockies piled it on late. The veteran first baseman has a weak .234 batting average but has been plenty productive nonetheless. He has 19 home runs, seven triples, 65 RBI, 62 runs scored and 14 steals in 119 games. The batting average will probably climb some as the season rolls to a conclusion.

Cole Hamels spun seven scoreless frames as part of a 1-0 victory over the Pirates on Friday.

Hamels’ excellent run with the Cubs continues. He scattered five hits — all of them singles — while walking two batters and striking out five. He got a lot of help from the double play ball, inducing five of them. He’s the first pitcher to get at least five double plays in a start since Luis Perdomo had six on August 28, 2016. Hamels now holds a 0.72 ERA and 25/6 K/BB ratio in 25 innings through four starts with Chicago. Fantasy owners need to keep running him out there for now. He has upcoming inviting matchups against the Tigers and Mets.
Aug 18 - 12:14 AM

Anthony DeSclafani gave up one run through 7 2/3 innings and did not factor into the decision against the Giants on Friday.

He tosed an even 100 pitches, 66 for strikes, while striking out five batters against one walk. The only run he allowed was driven in by Andrew McCutchen in the third inning. The Reds couldn't provide DeSclafani with much run support -- it took them until the 11th inning to score their second run of the game. His record holds at 6-3 with a 4.12 ERA in 13 starts. He missed all of last season and the first several weeks of this year while recovering from elbow and oblique injuries.

Max Scherzer fired six scoreless frames in an 8-2 win over the Marlins on Friday.

Scherzer is now tops in the majors with 16 wins. He gave up five hits — all of them singles — and walked just one batter while striking out seven. Scherzer also went 1-for-2 with a double and two runs scored, which brings his batting average to .296 for the year. He’s really doing it all. The Nats' ace now holds a 2.11 ERA and 234/41 K/BB ratio in 174 2/3 innings through 26 starts this year. He’s building quite the case for this third straight National League Cy Young Award.
Aug 17 - 10:28 PM

Carlos Carrasco struck out six while turning in seven scoreless innings and was credited with a 2-1 win over the Orioles on Friday.

He surrendered just three base hits -- all singles -- and issued one base-on-balls in the sterling outing. He improved his record to 15-6 with a 3.33 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in 23 starts and one relief appearance. He is tied for second in the majors in wins, one behind Max Scherzer. Carrasco has a fantastic 161:28 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 143 1/3 innings. He will face a much tougher opponent on Wednesday in Boston.
Aug 17 - 10:19 PM

Aaron Nola struck out 11 batters over seven innings of one-run ball in a 4-2 win over the Mets on Friday.

It was his fifth double-digit strikeout game of the season. Nola allowed just three hits and one walk while hitting a batter, with the only run scoring on a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning. The Phillies’ ace has now allowed two earned runs or fewer in nine out of his last 10 starts. That gives him a 2.24 ERA and 160/44 K/BB ratio in 161 innings through 25 starts. Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer still have better ERAs, but Nola is a legitimate Cy Young Award candidate in his own right.
Aug 17 - 9:39 PM

Eric Thames left Friday's game with right knee soreness.

Thames hurt his knee in a collision with Lorenzo Cain in the first inning. We should know more on his status after the game, but it's probably safe to consider him day-to-day for now.
Aug 17 - 9:30 PM

Eric Thames exited Friday's game against the Cardinals with an apparent injury.

Thames was involved in a nasty collision with teammate Lorenzo Cain in the outfield during the first inning. He stayed in the game initially before Hernan Perez took over in right field in the third inning. The Brewers should provide more specifics soon.
Aug 17 - 9:22 PM

David Peralta is not in Friday's lineup against the Padres.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Peralta was resting back at the team hotel, but is expected to be at the ballpark for the start of Friday's game. Lovullo said he's fine, but perhaps he's dealing with a minor illness. Either way, it doesn't sound like a long-term concern. Jon Jay is starting in left field on Friday and will hit leadoff.
