Ohio State HC Urban Meyer's administrative leave does not permit him to make contact with either his players or the coaches on his staff.

If you were wondering if Meyer's been shadow-coaching his crew while he's been on leave, the answer would -- at least by the letter of the law -- be no. OSU OC Ryan Day is serving as acting head coach while Meyer is awaiting the results of the university's investigation into his role in keeping WR coach Zach Smith on staff through serious domestic violence allegations levied against him by his ex-wife Courtney Smith. This investigation is expected to be concluded within the next 10 days or thereabouts, at which point Meyer will learn his fate.

FIU junior RB Shawndarrius Phillips was arrested on an outstanding warrant on Wednesday.

A little bit to unpack, here. Phillips was arrested on Wednesday for suspicion of domestic battery by strangulation relating to an alleged confrontation with his girlfriend on June 17, with his arrest warrant issued on Aug. 24 -- before FIU had even kicked off their season. That warrant was outstanding up until the arrest was finally made this week, despite the fact that Phillips was easily, easily locatable. He appeared in 11 games during the regular season while making five starts. Even now, the team is not commenting on the case (specifically we're wondering whether or not they were aware of the situation prior to Wednesday), with the junior still listed on the team's online roster. Just a strange case on the whole in the way that it was mishandled by, apparently, everybody. Again, the warrant was issued on Aug. 24.

The Athletic's Bruce Feldman reports that Akron will hire Chattanooga HC Tom Arth to serve in the same capacity.

Akron a little behind the eight ball in finding their next head coach relative to other teams in similar situations, but looks like they've got their man, now. Arth has spent the last two seasons heading up Chattanooga's program and earlier served as head coach at John Carroll (D-III) from 2013-16. Arth owns a respectable 49-21 record for his head-coaching career, though it should be noted that he went just 9-13 at Chattanooga.

UCLA redshirt sophomore QB Devon Modster transferred to Cal.

Modster (6'1/250) announced his transfer intent in late September. He did not take a snap during the 2018 season. The redshirt sophomore signal-caller had a spot cameo near the end of the 2017 campaign, when he saw playing time due to Josh Rosen injury concern. In five games for that season as a whole, he threw for 671 yards with a 4/0 TD/INT ratio. Crucially, Modster spent the autumn in the JUCO ranks (though not as a football player) following his transfer declaration and is expected to be eligible to play immediately with Cal in 2019. The Golden Bears are almost certainly going to be having an open competition at quarterback this offseason and we could see Modster starting next season if he can show out strong with his new crew. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Alabama sophomore QB Tua Tagovailoa (ankle) was able to throw during Friday's practice.

Tagovailoa (6'1/218) underwent a minor surgical procedure on his ankle following the SEC Championship Game. He was initially expected to be working on a two-week recovery timeline and it looks like he was able to stay on track with that. The sophomore star has until Dec. 29 to get back to full strength as best he can before Alabama embarks on its Playoff run in a semifinal showdown with Oklahoma.
Dec 14 - 5:34 PM

Kentucky junior RB Benny Snell will play in the team's Citrus Bowl matchup with Penn State on Jan. 1.

Snell (5'11/223) declared for the draft earlier on Friday, but while many draft declarations come with a subsequent bowl skippage, that won't be the case with the junior standout. A potential Day 2 prospect for the spring, Snell is currently just four yards shy of setting a new season-best mark for rushing yardage. He's currently sitting on 1,330 yards and 14 touchdowns for the campaign.
Dec 14 - 5:19 PM

Wake Forest redshirt sophomore WR Greg Dortch (finger) has not been practicing in advance of the team's Birmingham Bowl date with Memphis.

Dortch (5'9/217) injured his finger in a blowout win over Duke to close out the regular season. The Winston-Salem Journal's Conor O'Neill passes along that the injury was "more serious than initially thought." While the redshirt sophomore does have a few more days in which to get right -- the Birmingham Bowl will kick off on Saturday, Dec. 22 -- he should be considered questionable to play upcoming. It would be a major loss if he can't play in the contest, as Dortch is as reliable as they come. For the 2018 regular season he posted an 89-1078-8 receiving line.
Dec 14 - 3:35 PM

Kentucky junior RB Benny Snell declared for the 2019 NFL Draft.

Snell (5'11/223) has been the definition of a workhorse during his career at Kentucky, topping 1,000 while registering double-digit touchdowns in each of his three seasons on campus. For the just-completed campaign, he logged 1,330 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns. Physicality is the buzzword with Snell. He's also a strong pass-blocker and scheme-versatile to boot. What to look for during his evaluating process -- Snell's athletic testing numbers later this winter are going to be crucial, as he's not the fastest nor shiftiest of backs. Bleacher Report's Matt Miller forwarded him as a potential Day 2 selection in his Dec. 7 scouting notebook. Miller, it should be noted, does not believe there is a Round 1 running back in the draft-eligible class for 2019. This seems to be a consensus view at this juncture. We'll see if things change as the process moves along on its merry way.
Dec 14 - 3:24 PM

Texas sophomore RB Toneil Carter will transfer.

Carter (5'11/210) signed with Texas as a four-star prospect in the 2017 class, but found himself buried on the depth chart in 2018. He did not receive a carry for the campaign, this after rushing for 252 yards and three touchdowns as a true freshman last fall. Because Carter did not see the field this year, he'll be eligible to take a redshirt for the current season. He will still have to sit out the 2019 campaign to satisfy transfer regulations, at least barring a move out of the FBS.
Dec 14 - 2:52 PM

Kansas State junior RB Alex Barnes declared for the 2019 NFL Draft.

Barnes (6'1/225) steps into the draft light on the heels of a career-best season in which he rushed for 1,355 yards (5.3 YPC) and 12 touchdowns. Brad Kelly of The Draft Network notes that the Kansas State product "has NFL-level athletic ability" and has the vision to take advantage of holes, though the analyst notes that he can sometimes tend to dance a little too much in the backfield. Walter Football's Charlie Campbell sees Barnes going off the board somewhere between Rounds 3 and 5.
Dec 14 - 2:46 PM

Former Florida State redshirt sophomore T Josh Ball will not be returning to Florida State.

Ball (6'8/323) was dismissed from the program over the summer due to allegations of dating violence levied against him, but there had been some speculation recently that he might be returning to the team. That's no longer in the cards, if it ever was, as Ball took to Twitter on Thursday to say that he would not be coming back. The former four-star prospect spent the 2018 season at the JUCO level after starting the final seven games for Florida State during the 2017 campaign. Whether he will resurface with another FBS program remains to be seen.
Dec 14 - 2:11 PM

Toledo redshirt junior RB Art Thompkins will transfer as a graduate.

Thompkins (5'8/180) had his moments during the 2018 campaign, finishing up with 563 rushing yards (5.7 YPC) and six touchdowns across 12 games played. The emergence of redshirt freshman Bryant Koback down the stretch may have served as writing on the wall that playing time would be a fight in 2019 had he remained at Toledo. As a graduate transfer, Thompkins will be eligible to play immediately with his new team during the coming season. He'll make for a nice roster add upcoming.
