NHL Fades: Tuesday

Tuesday, February 6, 2018

As is the case with every NHL Fades, we are going to look at some players who you should think twice about placing in your lineup or who you should avoid using entirely. Remember to check back on this page later in the day for confirmations on starting goalies and keep an eye on Rotoworld’s daily blurbs for all your fantasy hockey needs.

Keep in mind that FanDuel allows you to roster nine players (2C, 4W, 2D, 1G) with a salary cap of $55,000, while DraftKings has a cap of $50,000 for nine players (2C, 3W, 2D, 1G, 1UT).

Dylan Larkin (DET) – C - $6,100 FanDuel, $6,000 DraftKings

Though Larkin is well on his way to establishing a new career-high this season, he’s hit a snag.  Over his last five games he’s been held off the scoresheet and he didn’t even record a shot in his most recent contest.  On top of that, Detroit will be facing Boston tonight, which has been a very tough opponent in recent weeks.  I particularly don’t like his DraftKings price right now, given the tighter budget on that site.

Evander Kane (BUF) – W - $5,800 FanDuel, $5,500 DraftKings

Kane has gone eight straight games without a point and has just one assist in his last 12 games.  This is easily the worst stretch he’s had in what has otherwise been a really good season for him.  He’s definitely someone to keep an eye on as he could be a nice choice once he starts to turn things around.

Jeff Skinner (CAR) – W - $5,600 FanDuel, $5,400 DraftKings

Skinner has had a pretty up-and-down career with him seeing his biggest high last season when he scored 37 goals and 63 points in 79 games.  Unfortunately 2017-18 is looking like it will be a bit of a dip as he has 15 goals and 31 points in 53 contests.  It certainly didn’t start out that way as he scored seven goals in his first 10 games and nine markers through 16 contests, but he’s dried up with three goals and five points in his last 18 games.

Derick Brassard (OTT) – C - $5,700 FanDuel, $3,800 DraftKings

On DraftKings he does have a bargain basement price, but his FanDuel price is pretty mediocre relative to the 10.6 FanDuel points per game he’s gotten this season.  The bigger problem is that he’s been playing below his norm lately as he’s been limited to a goal and no assists over his last 10 games.

Jack Eichel (BUF) – C - $7,900 FanDuel, $7,100 DraftKings

Eichel has gone four straight games without a point, but that’s not why I decided to include him on today’s list.  He is a superstar, so it’s always a tough call to include him on here even during somewhat cold patches.  The reason why I ultimately decided to put him on here is because there are other superstar centers that are red hot right now.  Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Patrice Bergeron have been stunning over the last month and change, so if you’re going to spend top dollar on a center, those would be my preferences for now.

Ivan Provorov (PHI) – D - $5,300 FanDuel, $5,300 DraftKings

Provorov is one of those players who are worth picking up a lot of the time, but I’m just hesitant to grab right now.  He’s just going through with an assist in his last five games and three points in his last nine contests.

Jaden Schwartz (STL) – W - $6,700 FanDuel, $6,600 DraftKings

Schwartz has been quiet lately with two goals and four points in 10 contests, which makes me somewhat reluctant to take him right now relative to his competition.  Rickard Rakell is one of the hottest forwards in the league right now and in FanDuel he’s a little cheaper than Schwartz while he’s a bit more expensive than him in DraftKings.  Matthew Tkachuk is also pretty hot right now and comes at the same price point as Schwartz in FanDuel while being significantly cheaper than him in DraftKings.

T.J. Oshie (WAS) – W - $5,400 FanDuel, $5,600 DraftKings

Oshie was really strong through roughly the first quarter of the campaign with 10 goals and 22 points in 25 contests.  Since then he’s been more miss than hit though with his two goals and eight points in 21 games.  As you might imagine, that DraftKings price looks less appealing than the FanDuel one, but I’m not a fan of him on either site.

Jonathan Toews (CHI) – C - $6,800 FanDuel, $5,600 DraftKings

I don’t mind that DraftKings price, but I’m reluctant to take a chance for him right now in FanDuel.  He’s just been awfully quiet lately with no goals and two assists in his last 10 games.

Daniel Sedin (VAN) – W - $6,100 FanDuel, $4,500 DraftKings

Sedin’s DraftKings price is okay, but I don’t like where he’s priced in FanDuel.  He’s averaged 9.7 FanDuel points per game, which puts him behind most other players at that price range.  In FanDuel, Gabriel Landeskog, for example, is only $400 more expensive than Sedin ($1,200 more than Sedin in DraftKings if you’re curious) while Nikolaj Ehlers is a little cheaper.
