Shark Attack

Friday, January 12, 2018

There was not a lot of news coming out of NHL cities this week as more than half the league had their mandated five day by week.

It’s a good move by the PA and the NHL but I would have done it the week before the All-Star Break as well as a week after to give the players a lengthy break.

There is plenty of information and good chatter always on the Rotoworld Hockey Podcast. Listen here.

3 Games – Arizona, Colorado, Nashville, New Jersey, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Toronto, Washington

2 Games - Buffalo, Carolina, Detroit, Florida, Ottawa, Tampa Bay, Vancouver, Winnipeg

1 Game - Calgary, Chicago, Columbus, Edmonton, Minnesota

Dallas, San Jose and Vegas play all four games on the road.

Anaheim, Colorado, Los Angeles and Nashville play three games at home.

Pittsburgh plays all three games on the road.

INJURIES

Zach Bogosian is out six-eight weeks with a lower body injury. (Click here to see the rest of the injury list.)

Note: A tired team is one that has played the day or night before and is going against a team that did not play the previous day or night. The reverse is true for a rested team.

ANAHEIM

Games this week

@ Colorado, vs. Pittsburgh, vs. Los Angeles, vs. San Jose

Rested Team: vs. Los Angeles (Friday), vs. San Jose (Sunday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Ducks play four times this week so Ryan Miller will likely see the crease once with John Gibson playing three times. The Ducks sent Kevin Roy and Ondrej Kase to the minors during their break to get some playing time in. Corey Perry returned to the Anaheim lineup on Saturday for the first time in 12 games. The Ducks have five shorthanded goals this season with defensemen Brandon Montour and Cam Fowler each having one. Rickard Rakell leads the Ducks with three power play goals as well as 15 goals this season. Kevin Bieksa has 61 penalty minutes.

ARIZONA

Games this week

vs. San Jose, @ Nashville, @ St. Louis

Rested Team: vs. San Jose (Tuesday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Coyotes swung a deal this week, sending disgruntled forward Anthony Duclair to Chicago along with defenseman Adam Clendening and received Richard Panik and Laurent Dauphin in return. Dauphin was drafted by Arizona in the second round of the 2013 Draft by the Coyotes but they sent him to the Blackhawks in the off-season as part of the Niklas Hjalmarsson trade. Panik should be a third line player in Arizona and possibly a second liner. Derek Stepan has both of the Coyotes shorthanded goals. Christian Fischer, Clayton Keller, Brendan Perlini and Oliver Ekman-Larsson each have four power play goals. Ekman-Larsson is a minus-34 this season.

BOSTON

Games this week

vs. Dallas, vs. Montreal, @ New York Islanders, @ Montreal

Rested Team: @ Montreal (Saturday)

Tired Team: @ New York Islanders (Thursday)

Notes

The Bruins play four times this week including three games in four nights. Expect to see Anton Khudobin play once with Tuukka Rask getting the call three times. The Bruins play Montreal twice this week and also played them last week so tempers could flare at any time. Brad Marchand and Kevan Miller are likely to add to their penalty minute count if there is a fight. Patrice Bergeron was the first star of the week with five goals and seven points in three games. The Bruins have three shorthanded goals with Bergeron, Marchand and Danton Heinen each having one. Bergeron and Marchand lead the Bruins with five power play goals apiece. Miller leads with 54 penalty minutes.

BUFFALO

Games this week

@ New York Rangers, vs. Dallas

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

Zach Bogosian is out for four-six weeks with a lower body injury suffered during practice on Wednesday. He collided with Evander Kane. It was not a good practice for Kane as he got into a shoving and shouting match with Justin Falk at the same practice as Falk called him out for being selfish. Look for Kane, who is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, to be dealt at or before the trade deadline. Jacob Josefson is day-to-day with a lower body injury. Kane has three of the four Sabres shorthanded goals. Ryan O'Reilly leads with six goals on the power play. Jordan Nolan has 43 penalty minutes.

CALGARY

Games this week

vs. Winnipeg

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

What a season Micheal Ferland is having. The winger was definitely considered a bottom-six forward heading into the season as he has only 19 goals and 24 assists in 147 games over his last two seasons. But a move to the top line with Sean Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau after an earlier injury to Jaromir Jagr worked out amazingly and he has 19 goals and 28 points in 42 games. He has a goal and an assist in each of his last four games as well. It looks like Jagr and the Flames will part company once Jagr is healthy. Michael Frolik has scored two of the Flames three shorthanded goals with Mark Giordano garnering the other. Monahan has seven goals on the power play. Troy Brouwer has 49 penalty minutes.

CAROLINA

Games this week

@ Detroit, vs. Vegas

Rested Team: None

Tired Team:  vs. Vegas (Sunday)

Notes

The big news out of Carolina is that Tom Dundon has officially purchased a majority interest in the Hurricanes from Peter Karmonos Jr. with Karmonos retaining a minority share in the team. Noah Hanifin will be the Hurricanes representative in the All-Star game. Jordan Staal scored a shorthanded goal on Thursday to give him two this season, the only Hurricane to score with the man-disadvantage. The Hurricanes have four players with three power play goals including Sebastian Aho, Jeff Skinner, Teuvo Teravainen and Elias Lindholm. Justin Williams leads Carolina with only 27 penalty minutes, one ahead of Justin Faulk and Marcus Kruger.

 CHICAGO

Games this week

vs. New York Islanders

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Blackhawks did not give up a lot for the services of Anthony Duclair as Richard Panik and Laurent Dauphin head off to Arizona. Duclair scored 20 goals as a rookie a couple of seasons back and although he has struggled since with a stint in the minors last year, he still has top-six skills. They also received Adam Clendening but he is just a depth defenseman at best. The Blackhawks made Brent Seabrook a healthy scratch this week for the first time in his 14 year career and he responded with his second goal of the season in his next game back. Tommy Wingels leads with two shorthanded goals. The injured Artem Anisimov has seven goals on the power play while John Hayden has 43 penalty minutes.

COLORADO

Games this week

vs. Anaheim, vs. San Jose, vs. New York Rangers

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

It appears that Semyon Varlamov may not be ready to return to the Avs lineup from a lower body injury as Andrew Hammond was recalled on Thursday. Jonathan Bernier excelled in the Avs net during the absence of Varlamov and was rewarded as he was the second star of the week. Bernier was 3-0 with a 1.60 GAA and a .957 save percentage. Nathan MacKinnon is having his best season to date in the NHL with 18 goals and 52 points in 41 games. He is in a four-way tie for second place in NHL scoring. Blake Comeau and J.T. Compher each have a pair of shorthanded goals. Mikko Rantanen and MacKinnon have seven power play goals while Erik Johnson has 48 minutes in the penalty box.

COLUMBUS

Games this week

vs. Dallas

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

Joonas Korpisalo was sent to the minors in order to get in some work. Matiss Kivlenieks was recalled but will likely be glued to the bench until Korpisalo returns. David Savard was fined $5,000 for slashing Vincent Trocheck of the Panthers. Artemi Panarin has only 12 goals (along with 25 assists) in 45 games but has five in his last 10 contests. Matt Calvert has the lone shorthanded goal for Columbus thus far. Pierre-Luc Dubois is having a fine rookie season and leads the Blue Jackets with three power play goals. Nick Foligno has 32 penalty minutes, one ahead of Boone Jenner.

DALLAS

Games this week

@ Boston, @ Detroit, @ Columbus, @ Buffalo

Rested Team: @ Detroit (Tuesday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Stars play all four games on the road including three in four nights. Kari Lehtonen should get at least one start and maybe a couple while Ben Bishop will therefore get two or three starts in net. Michael Paliotta was traded from the Toronto Marlies to the Texas Stars (part of the Dallas chain) Thursday. Tyler Seguin will play in the All-Star game along with John Klingberg. Klingberg is on a five game scoring streak. Radek Faksa, Seguin, Mattias Janmark and Devin Shore each have one shorthanded goal. Seguin leads with eight power play goals while Antoine Roussel has 75 penalty minutes.
