Week 15: NFC Targets & Touches

Wednesday, December 19, 2018

Targets and Touches will only have players’ six most recent games, regardless if they were active or on a bye. The data will be in descending order of games played.

All targets and touches data is compiled from Pro Football Reference. Air yards data is sourced via Josh Hermsmeyer’s AirYards.com. Cornerback and routes run data is sourced via Pro Football Focus. The AFC will be released on Tuesdays, while the NFC is published on Wednesday.

The goal of these articles is to give you an idea of what the usage looks like for each player within their offenses, allowing you to spot any positive or negative trends regarding how a player is being used, and most importantly — letting the numbers tell the story.

Note: This data will stick to players averaging over one target/touch per game. Players are listed in order of target/touch leaders for their respective teams.

Editor's Note: If you love Fantasy Football you have to be playing on DRAFT. It's daily fantasy football snake drafts instead of salary caps. All the fun of season long drafts but with no management and they last for just one week. They take minutes to complete and there's even auction drafts! No more setting lineups or constantly worrying about pros, just draft and win! Right now DRAFT is giving Rotoworld readers an exclusive FREE entry into a real money draft when you make your first deposit! Here's the link

Week 15 AFC Targets and Touches can be reviewed here.

Arizona Cardinals

Targets: Larry Fitzgerald (10, 4, 2, 6, 9, 8), Ricky Seals-Jones (9, 3, 2, 3, 5, 8), David Johnson (9, 3, 3, 2, 10, 6), J.J. Nelson (1, 1, 0, 0, 7, 0), Trent Sherfield (0, 2, 1, 3, 7, 5)

Air Yards: Larry Fitzgerald (60, 57, 15, 98, 86, 42), David Johnson (21, -11, -3, -8, -13, 26), Ricky Seals-Jones (91, 6, 12, 26, 65, 96), J.J. Nelson (38, 45, 0, 0, 136, 0), Trent Sherfield (0, 22, 5, 51, 73, 37)

Receiving Yards: Larry Fitzgerald (50, 23, 30, 48, 55, 82), Ricky Seals-Jones (51, 5, 5, 10, 31, 22), David Johnson (85, 17, 16, 3, 12, 68), J.J. Nelson (0, 0, 0, 0, 43, 0), Trent Sherfield (0, 6, 6, 21, 77, 15)

Carries: David Johnson (21, 25, 17, 20, 15, 11), Chase Edmonds (2, 5, 5, 5, 3, 8)

RZ Targets: David Johnson (1, 0, 0, 0, 1, 1), Larry Fitzgerald (1, 2, 0, 0, 1, 0), Ricky Seals-Jones (0, 0, 1, 0, 0, 1), Trent Sherfield (0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 1)

RZ Carries: David Johnson (4, 0, 1, 2, 1, 2), Chase Edmonds (1, 1, 0, 3, 0, 3)

CB Catches-Yards-Touchdowns Allowed: Patrick Peterson (2-42, 3-20-1, 2-20, 1-8, 0-0, 4-67-1), Budda Baker (4-65-1, X, X, 5-53-1, 3-22, 2-19), David Amerson (X, X, 2-18-1, 3-29, 4-24, 1-9)

Observations: It admittedly took garbage time for him to return any value, but Trent Sherfield (3/15/1) again leveraged Chad Williams’ absence into 64 snaps (94%) and the second-most routes run (42) for Arizona. Over the last two weeks, Sherfield has quietly been in on 129-of-138 snaps and run 86 routes on the Cardinals’ 90 dropbacks in that stretch. This offense isn’t one for efficiency, so Sherfield’s ceiling leaves a whole lot to be desired, but his elite on-field usage still makes him a fine min salary DFS cash game option indoors this week.

Atlanta Falcons

Targets: Julio Jones (11, 9, 14, 8, 11, 8), Mohamed Sanu (8, 6, 4, 4, 8, 6), Austin Hooper (11, 8, 5, 5, 6, 1), Tevin Coleman (5, 3, 4, 3, 1, 1), Calvin Ridley (5, 4, 13, 5, 4, 7), Ito Smith (5, 2, 2, 1, 4, 3)

Air Yards: Julio Jones (105, 189, 162, 228, 168, 57), Mohamed Sanu (26, 74, 64, 74, 74, 33), Austin Hooper (49, 35, 19, 22, 47, 3), Calvin Ridley (31, 37, 149, 50, 44, 49), Tevin Coleman (5, -10, -3, 17, -4, 1), Ito Smith (-3, 9, -5, -1, -6, -6)

Receiving Yards: Julio Jones (107, 118, 147, 18, 106, 82), Tevin Coleman (19, 27, 17, 3, -4, 0), Austin Hooper (56, 27, 31, 44, 37, 0), Mohamed Sanu (47, 56, 74, 37, 54, 30), Calvin Ridley (37, 32, 93, 22, 10, 42), Ito Smith (15, 12, 7, 0, 14, 5)

Carries: Tevin Coleman (11, 8, 8, 6, 10, 11), Ito Smith (4, 6, 4, 7, 11, 9)

RZ Targets: Julio Jones (0, 3, 0, 3, 0, 2), Austin Hooper (0, 4, 1, 0, 1, 0), Mohamed Sanu (0, 1, 0, 0, 0, 0), Calvin Ridley (0, 1, 0, 2, 0, 0), Ito Smith (0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0), Tevin Coleman (4, 1, 0, 1, 0, 0)

RZ Carries: Ito Smith (1, 0, 2, 1, 0, 0), Tevin Coleman (1, 5, 0, 2, 0, 0)

CB Catches-Yards-Touchdowns Allowed: Desmond Trufant (3-53, 2-19, 2-24-1, 1-21, 3-17, 2-13), Brian Poole (0-0, 2-24, 1-6, 1-8, 2-12, 4-62), Robert Alford (3-59-1, 3-46, 1-5, 2-28, 5-62-1, 0-0)

Observations: With Ito Smith (knee, I.R.) now done, the Falcons have only Tevin Coleman, Brian Hill, and practice squad call-up Jeremy Langford at their disposal to close out the year. There’s genuine concern the team stuffs Hill right into Smith’s previous 1B role, but it is worth noting the Falcons are assured only two more games of Coleman before he inevitably walks in free agency. He warrants low-end RB2/flex consideration with potential RB1 upside for that reason alone. The Panthers have allowed the seventh-fewest receptions to running backs, likely keeping Coleman’s diminishing role in Atlanta’s passing game (and thus, his floor) dangerously low.

Carolina Panthers

Targets: Christian McCaffrey (5, 8, 11, 10, 7, 11), Devin Funchess (5, 8, X, 3, 3, 1), D.J. Moore (5, 8, 9, 8, 8, 3), Curtis Samuel (4, 7, 2, 11, 8, 4), Ian Thomas (0, 0, 0, 5, 11, 4)

Air Yards: Devin Funchess (49, 133, X, 54, 66, 13), D.J. Moore (10, 66, 66, 129, 29, 20), Christian McCaffrey (4, 22, -10, 21, -12, 56), Curtis Samuel (10, 91, 16, 160, 127, 32), Ian Thomas (0, 0, 0, 28, 40, 10)

Receiving Yards: Christian McCaffrey (61, 57, 112, 55, 38, 67), Devin Funchess (32, 39, X, 10, 0, 0), D.J. Moore (20, 157, 91, 44, 67, 12), Curtis Samuel (18, 55, 17, 88, 80, 17), Ian Thomas (0, 0, 0, 46, 77, 14)

Carries: Christian McCaffrey (14, 13, 17, 10, 16, 15), Cam Newton (2, 2, 8, 6, 5, 5)

RZ Targets: D.J. Moore (0, 1, 0, 1, 3, 0), Christian McCaffrey (1, 0, 4, 2, 0, 0), Devin Funchess (0, 1, X, 1, 0, 1), Curtis Samuel (0, 1, 1, 1, 1, 0), Ian Thomas (0, 0, 0, 0, 2, 0)

RZ Carries: Christian McCaffrey (1, 3, 9, 0, 7, 0), Cam Newton (0, 0, 2, 0, 1, 0)

CB Catches-Yards-Touchdowns Allowed: James Bradberry (3-90-1, 6-93-1, 3-72, 4-48, 2-9, 1-9), Donte Jackson (4-51-1, 3-24, X, 6-108, 5-104, 1- -3), Captain Munnerlyn (2-14, 1-8, 7-127, 6-53, 2-15, 3-36)

Observations: With less than a one percent chance of making the playoffs, it’s possible the Panthers simply shut down Cam Newton for the rest of the year. In the unlikely event he continues to play through his nagging shoulder injury, though, there’s no need to fret about Christian McCaffrey’s usage. In fact, he’s actually been helped by Newton’s inability to attack downfield, amassing the highest target share (27%) of any back in the league in Carolina’s past four games. Now squaring off against an Atlanta defense that’s allowed the most receptions to opposing runners, McCaffrey is clashing with Ezekiel Elliott (see below) for the week’s top spot at their respective position. McCaffrey hauled in 14-of-15 targets for 102 yards in his first bout with the Falcons back in Week 2.

Chicago Bears

Targets: Allen Robinson (8, 7, 4, 9, 8, 7), Tarik Cohen (7, 4, 8, 14, 4, 6), Taylor Gabriel (3, 9, 8, 7, 7, 3), Trey Burton (4, 1, 7, 1, 5, 7), Jordan Howard (1, 1, 2, 1, 1, 1), Anthony Miller (6, 3, 4, 2, 1, 0)

Air Yards: Allen Robinson (116, 86, 90, 90, 65, 71), Trey Burton (27, 1, 35, 18, 75, 57), Taylor Gabriel (149, 90, 51, 103, 39, 22), Anthony Miller (85, 50, 44, 7, 9, 0), Tarik Cohen (2, -1, 37, 85, 2, 8), Jordan Howard (4, 0, 1, -2, 2, 2)

Receiving Yards: Allen Robinson (133, 39, 37, 79, 42, 54), Taylor Gabriel (0, 52, 49, 17, 22, 33), Tarik Cohen (29, 23, 45, 156, 20, 31), Anthony Miller (122, 25, 41, 1, 0, 0), Jordan Howard (11, 2, 2, 4, 2, 15), Trey Burton (40, 9, 28, 0, 22, 36)

Carries: Jordan Howard (11, 18, 7, 16, 19, 19), Tarik Cohen (7, 7, 3, 8, 9, 5), Mitchell Trubisky (3, 10, X, X, 6, 3)

RZ Targets: Allen Robinson (1, 0, 0, 1, 2, 0), Tarik Cohen (0, 0, 1, 2, 0, 3), Trey Burton (1, 0, 1, 1, 0, 1), Anthony Miller (1, 1, 0, 2, 0, 0), Taylor Gabriel (0, 0, 0, 1, 2, 0), Jordan Howard (0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0)

RZ Carries: Jordan Howard (0, 0, 0, 4, 0, 5), Tarik Cohen (1, 0, 0, 1, 1, 0), Mitchell Trubisky (2, 1, X, X, 0, 0)

CB Catches-Yards-Touchdowns Allowed: Prince Amukamara (7-90, 9-88-2, 2-4, 3-27, 3-23, 5-80), Kyle Fuller (3-49-1, 10-80, 6-50, 3-24, 2-14, 4-40), Sherrick McManis (X, X, X, X, 3-18, 3-17)

Observations: No observations.

Dallas Cowboys

Targets: Amari Cooper (10, 5, 9, 8, 13, 7), Michael Gallup (3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 0), Ezekiel Elliott (7, 8, 6, 6, 13, 8), Cole Beasley (5, 7, 2, 3, 4, 7)

Air Yards: Amari Cooper (119, 36, 60, 50, 167, 87), Michael Gallup (14, 107, 72, 112, 142, 0), Cole Beasley (34, 44, 8, 11, 43, 30), Ezekiel Elliott (-3, 14, -7, -3, 15, -3)

Receiving Yards: Amari Cooper (75, 36, 180, 75, 217, 32), Michael Gallup (34, 10, 19, 76, 24, 0), Ezekiel Elliott (36, 79, 22, 60, 79, 41), Cole Beasley (37, 51, 5, 9, 18, 42)

Carries: Ezekiel Elliott (19, 23, 26, 23, 28, 18), Dak Prescott (6, 4, 6, 5, 4, 0)

RZ Targets: Amari Cooper (2, 1, 0, 0, 1, 0), Ezekiel Elliott (2, 0, 2, 1, 1, 1), Cole Beasley (0, 1, 0, 0, 1, 0), Michael Gallup (0 ,0, 0, 1, 1, 0)

RZ Carries: Ezekiel Elliott (5, 2, 3, 2, 4, 2), Dak Prescott (3, 1, 3, 0, 3, 0)

CB Catches-Yards-Touchdowns Allowed: Anthony Brown (5-46, 5-54, 4-30-1, 2-30-1, 1-7, 4-31), Byron Jones (3-39, 6-22, 3-31, 1-3, 2-44-1, 2-18), Chidobe Awuzie (4-33-1, 4-64-1, 2-24, 1-11, 3-33, 3-57)

Observations: Sports Info Solutions brought to light concerns of Dak Prescott’s now 0:3 TD:INT ratio against zone coverage this season, but those splits are fortunately a non-factor this week with the Bucs in town. Whereas the Colts run zone at a league-high clip (72%), Tampa Bay has shifted primarily to man coverage under interim DC Mark Duffner. Not only that, but the Bucs have allowed an average 37 points to their opponents on the road compared to just 20.5 at home. Coming off touch totals of 30, 31, 29, 40, and 25 in his past five games, Ezekiel Elliott suddenly finds himself in the spot of all spots against a Tampa unit that’s been hemorrhaged for the fifth-most fantasy points by opposing backs.

Detroit Lions

Targets: Kenny Golladay (13, 14, 8, 8, 4, 8), Theo Riddick (7, 7, 7, 4, 4, 3), Kerryon Johnson (7, 2, X, X, X, X), Bruce Ellington (X, 9, 7, 10, 4, X)

Air Yards: Kenny Golladay (178, 182, 66, 111, 62, 142), Theo Riddick (-1, -4, 3, 22, -3, 1), Kerryon Johnson (-9, -8, X, X, X, X), Bruce Ellington (X, 32, 22, 33, 12, X)

Receiving Yards: Kenny Golladay (78, 113, 90, 50, 5, 146), Kerryon Johnson (38, 10, X, X, X, X), Theo Riddick (60, 30, 48, 26, 30, 9), Bruce Ellington (X, 52, 28, 35, 17, X)

Carries: Kerryon Johnson (14, 15, X, X, X, X), LeGarrette Blount (6, 7, 19, 16, 12, 7), Theo Riddick (0, 1, 2, 8, 6, 8), Zach Zenner (1, 0, 2, 1, 12, 10)

RZ Targets: Kenny Golladay (1, 3, 1, 3, 0, 0), Theo Riddick (1, 0, 1, 2, 0, 0), Kerryon Johnson (1, 0, X, X, X, X), Bruce Ellington (X, 0, 0, 2, 0, X)

RZ Carries: LeGarrette Blount (2, 0, 6, 4, 0, 2), Kerryon Johnson (4, 3, X, X, X, X), Theo Riddick (0, 1, 1, 2, 0, 0), Zach Zenner (0, 0, 0, 0, 2, 3)

CB Catches-Yards-Touchdowns Allowed: Darius Slay (X, 4-54-1, 4-43, 3-50-1, 3-31, 1-11), Nevin Lawson (5-75-1, 7-54, 5-62-1, 1-19, 5-68, 3-47), Mike Ford (X, 5-144, 5-32, 6-76, 3-47, 4-84-1)

Observations: Fresh off his heavily-involved fourth quarter against the Bills in Week 14, 95th-percentile SPARQ freak Zach Zenner was handed the keys to Detroit’s backfield on Sunday. Not only did he get the nod over LeGarrette Blount to start the game, the 27-year-old out-touched the latter 13-7 on 26-of-57 snaps (46%). Blount’s touches and snaps were both season-low marks, even tying Zenner in carries inside the 5 (2). Minnesota’s No. 15 rush defense DVOA presents a tough matchup to opposing backs, but the team has notably been punched by Chris Carson (22/90/1) and Kalen Ballage (12/123/1) in their past two contests. At worst, Zenner’s surging usage deems him a desperate deep-league flex.

Green Bay Packers

Targets: Davante Adams (7, 12, 8, 13, 11, 13), Marquez Valdes-Scantling (7, 3, 2, 7, 2, 2), Jimmy Graham (1, 1, 4, 11, 5, 5), Randall Cobb (X, X, X, 5, 6, 7), Equanimeous St. Brown (3, 4, 5, 1, 3, 3)

Air Yards: Davante Adams (93, 195, 59, 160, 111, 168), Marquez Valdes-Scantling (35, 16, 10, 81, 4, 57), Jimmy Graham (14, 0, 40, 61, 91, 34), Randall Cobb (X, X, X, 16, 52, 114), Equanimeous St. Brown (31, 52, 51, 25, 14, 69)

Receiving Yards: Davante Adams (57, 166, 69, 93, 81, 119), Marquez Valdes-Scantling (44, 8, 3, 19, 19, 12), Jimmy Graham (14, 13, 34, 50, 19, 32), Randall Cobb (X, X, X, 25, 43, 30), Equanimeous St. Brown (3, 16, 53, 0, 12, 7)

Carries: Jamaal Williams (3, 1, 1, 7, 4, 12)

RZ Targets: Davante Adams (3, 0, 2, 2, 1, 1), Randall Cobb (X, X, X, 1, 0, 0), Jimmy Graham (0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 2), Marquez Valdes-Scantling (0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0)

RZ Carries: Jamaal Williams (0, 0, 0, 0, 1, 2)

CB Catches-Yards-Touchdowns Allowed: Bashaud Breeland (2-27, 3-12, X, X, 1-11, 0-0), Jaire Alexander (0-0, 4-41, 4-88, 1-37, 10-100-1, 4-60), Josh Jackson (7-92, 3-22-1, 3-27, 4-43, 1-8, 2-30), Tramon Williams (X, 2-48, 6-52-2, 2-8, 0-0, 1-9)

Observations: Aaron Jones (knee, I.R.) mustered only seven snaps before exiting against the Bears. He’s out for the year. His workload now shifts entirely to Jamaal Williams by default since the Packers only have third-down back Kapri Bibbs (signed Monday) and practice-squaders Lavon Coleman and Malcolm Johnson (who haven’t been promoted yet) behind him. Williams will thus be a true workhorse against the Jets in Week 16, as he flashed last week with 59 snaps (87%) and 36 routes on Aaron Rodgers’ 50 dropbacks. The elephant in the room is Rodgers’ pending availability and, in turn, Green Bay’s potential uphill game script with DeShone Kizer under center. Either way, Williams’ foreseeable usage makes him an easy lock-and-load RB2 in season-long this week.

Los Angeles Rams

Targets: Robert Woods (5, 11, BYE, 9, 13, 9), Brandin Cooks (12, 12, BYE, 6, 7, 7), Todd Gurley (4, 3, BYE, 5, 7, 13), Josh Reynolds (0, 8, BYE, 5, 7, 12), Gerald Everett (2, 4, BYE, 3, 7, 7), Tyler Higbee (3, 7, BYE, 3, 1, 2)

Air Yards: Robert Woods (77, 167, BYE, 132, 116, 24), Brandin Cooks (74, 154, BYE, 117, 90, 54), Josh Reynolds (0, 83, BYE, 37, 113, 157), Todd Gurley (-11, 0, BYE, 9, 7, 34), Gerald Everett (15, 40, BYE, 38, 27, 40), Tyler Higbee (21, 25, BYE, 10, 3, 5)

Receiving Yards: Brandin Cooks (100, 107, BYE, 62, 22, 59), Todd Gurley (40, 39, BYE, 33, 30, 76), Robert Woods (89, 72, BYE, 67, 61, 74), Josh Reynolds (0, 80, BYE, 19, 36, 70), Gerald Everett (15, 49, BYE, 7, 29, 46), Tyler Higbee (25, 63, BYE, 19, 9, 14)

Carries: Todd Gurley (16, 12, BYE, 23, 11, 12)

RZ Targets: Robert Woods (0, 4, BYE, 1, 0, 1), Todd Gurley (2, 0, BYE, 1, 0, 3), Brandin Cooks (2, 1, BYE, 0, 1, 0), Josh Reynolds (0, 3, BYE, 2, 0, 4), Gerald Everett (1, 2, BYE, 0, 1, 1), Tyler Higbee (1, 0, BYE, 0, 0, 0)

RZ Carries: Todd Gurley (1, 3, BYE, 6, 1, 2)

CB Catches-Yards-Touchdowns Allowed: Marcus Peters (3-22, 4-53, BYE, 2-8, 3-16, 1-4), Nickell Robey-Coleman (0-0, 2-14-2, BYE, 4-19, 1-8, 7-59), Aqib Talib (X, X, BYE, 1-24, 5-43, 5-132)

Observations: The Rams have elusive sixth-round rookie John Kelly, second-year pro Justin Davis (day-to-day) and recent signee C.J. Anderson available if Todd Gurley (knee, day-to-day) can’t go. If any project to take on Gurley’s role, it’s Kelly, but even that’s a true question mark. Los Angeles will likely enforce a committee against the Cardinals’ swiss-cheese No. 24 rushing defense DVOA. If you’re still playing for an incentive and remain desperate at tight end (and who isn’t), Sunday isn’t the worst spot to stream Gerald Everett. The 4.62-40 mammoth athlete has sneakily run 59 routes to Tyler Higbee’s 33 the past two games, accumulating seven targets in both performances.
