26. Ryan Preece

Friday, December 7, 2018

In 2015, Ryan Preece made a handful of Cup starts for Mike Curb in the No. 98. His best result was a 32nd-place finish at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in a field of 43 cars. Preece finished within four laps of the leaders that afternoon.

That was hardly enough to secure a full-time ride in the big leagues, so he went back to the Xfinity series and climbed into one of Johnny Davis’ cars in 2016 – scoring one top-10 at Darlington Raceway that season.

In 2017, he made only four starts, but he made the best of them with a sweep of the top five for Joe Gibbs Racing including a win at Iowa Speedway.

The 2018 season also got off to a great start with another win at Bristol capping off a seven-race top-10 streak. Still running only a part time schedule for Gibbs, he earned 10 top-10s in 15 starts.

Preece is not a household name for most fantasy players, but when it came time to consider replacing AJ Allmendinger, he must have been an easy choice.

Granted, Gibbs has a much greater advantage over the competition in the second series than JTG-Daugherty Racing has in Cup, but that is not a primary concern for players. In most games, Preece will be a good value when he finishes in the 20s. Given the strength of teammate Chris Buescher at times during the past couple of years, there is even a chance that he could finish in the teens on a few occasions.

With a new rules package coming down the pipe, some of the mid-pack teams are going to outperform expectations. Preece knows how to win. In addition to his pair of Xfinity victories, he has scored 25 trophies in 172 Whelen Modified Series races. In 12 seasons in that division, he has never failed to earn a top-10 and had top-fives in all but his first year.

Look for Preece to be at his best on the handful of tracks that host modified races. New Hampshire is a likely place for him to shine and as an extension of that he should also be relatively strong at Ingenuity Sun Media Raceway and Martinsville Speedway.
