Power Ranking After: Homestead

Friday, November 23, 2018

Joey Logano got on a hot streak at the right time to win the Cup, followed by Kevin Harvick, Martin Truex Jr., and Kyle Busch. They were the top fantasy earners as well, but as is always the case players needed to be aware of the remainder of the field and what momentum they brought to the weekend.

Unfortunately, aside from Harvick from the Championship 4, only Aric Almirola was able to close the year with three consecutive top-10s. Brad Keselowski and Matt Kenseth joined Busch as the only other drivers with back-to-back top-10s in the final two races.

1. Joey Logano (Last week: 1)
Weeks in the top 10: 27
FPR#: 4.44
Some players may have questioned Logano’s No. 1 ranking for the past few weeks, but his performance at Homestead should have dispelled that. He led the most laps during the race, had the best average running position and won the championship. Equally important, he did so as his competition finished second through fourth behind him, which meant the pressure never went away.

2. Kevin Harvick (Last week: 2)
Weeks in the top 10: 36
FPR#: 5.37
Harvick was disappointed to lose the championship, but standing on pit road after the Ford 400 he was quick to point out his eight wins. From the beginning of the season until its end, this team did not let up. They failed to keep up with the adjustments needed to challenge Logano during the closing laps, [https://nascar.nbcsports.com/2018/11/20/nascar-america-kevin-harvick-failed-to-keep-up-with-miami/] but Harvick still led the second-most laps at Homestead and scored his third straight top-five.

3. Martin Truex Jr. (Last week: 3)
Weeks in the top 10: 31
FPR#: 6.52
Last year Truex won the championship because he has a fast short run car. This year, he could not stay with Logano over the final 15 laps. If the race had gone longer, his handling would have improved and the outcome might have been different. Truex earned three top-fives and another top-10 in his last five races of 2018.

4. Kyle Busch (Last week: 6)
Weeks in the top 10: 35
FPR #: 6.98
Despite winning twice during the playoffs, Busch actually seemed to lose some momentum. His performance in the Ford 400 was less than optimal. Despite being gifted the No. 1 pit stall by his teammate Denny Hamlin, he couldn't capitalize. Busch‘s bad day in Florida still netted a top-five finish, however, and that was his fourth in the past five races.

5. Chase Elliott (Last week: 7)
Weeks in the top 10: 21
FPR #: 7.22
Very little attention was paid to any of the non-Championship 4 last week in Miami and Elliott had a seesaw race. After winning twice in the second round of the playoffs, he lost some of his power and finished either sixth or seventh in three of the last four events. After the Miami race, he said that his team is going to have to improve on that track if they ever want to win a championship.

6. Kurt Busch (Last week: 5)
Weeks in the top 10: 37
FPR#: 8.00
Busch ended his likely tenure with Stewart-Haas Racing and the 2018 season with a 10th-place finish – his 22nd of the year. That put him fourth on the chart behind the champion Logano (26) and the two dominators Harvick (29) and Kyle Busch (28). Dollar for dollar, Busch was the best value in most games.

7. Aric Almirola (Last week: 8)
Weeks in the top 10: 12
FPR #: 8.15
Almirola finished fifth in the standings in no small part to the fact that he ended the year on a high note. In the last 60 days of the season, he scored eight top-15s in nine races including his Talladega victory. After that win, his worst finish was an 11th. Consistency helps fantasy owners win their league.

8. Brad Keselowski (Last week: 4)
Weeks in the top 10: 32
FPR#: 8.51
Keselowski’s fourth-place ranking last week was partially attributable to the rash of wins he had at the end of the regular season and beginning of the playoffs. After that streak ended, he struggled to earn top-10s for three weeks but ended on a high note with four results of sixth or better in the last five races. Inconsistency in the playoffs kept him from challenging teammate Logano for the Cup.

9. Kyle Larson (Last week: 10)
Weeks in the top 10: 34
FPR #: 9.97
It has become fashionable lately to consider Larson a favorite at Homestead and believe he has a shot at a championship if he could just be in contentio0n entering that race. Unfortunately his performance this week is typical of that witnessed over the past several seasons: running the highline, he ‘jumped the cushion’ eventually and slapped the outside wall hard enough to damage his car and drop him to finish 13th.

10. Ryan Blaney (Last week: 9)
Weeks in the top 10: 30
FPR#: 10.42
Blaney ended the year among the top 10, but he faded dramatically during the playoffs. His Roval win and a second-place finish at Texas kept his nose above water in part because the drivers just outside this mark (Denny Hamlin and Clint Bowyer) struggled equally.

Big Movers outside the Top 10

19. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (Last week: 21)
Weeks in the top 10: 0
FPR#: 18.03
Roush Fenway Racing improved throughout the season but they still have a long way to go before being considered for a permanent position on one’s fantasy roster. Stenhouse qualified well in his last two races of 2018 and that could be something the team can build on next year.

15. Alex Bowman (Last week: 13)
Weeks in the top 10: 1
FPR#: 14.57
A rising tide lifts all ships in the harbor. It remains to be seen if the changes made at Hendrick Motorsports between Jimmie Johnson and William Byron’s team has a trickle-down effect to Bowman, but fantasy owners should be hopeful. He ended the year with four sub-25th-place results in his last seven races.
