13. Clint Bowyer

Friday, February 2, 2018

Clint Bowyer scored three runner-up results in 2017 and another pair of third-place finishes—but that only compounded the frustration fantasy owners had with the new Stewart-Haas Racing driver. He came oh so close on several occasions only to slip soon afterward—and the No. 14 team was never able to sustain momentum.

With 13 top-10s to his credit, it would seem like that some of these would come in waves, but Bowyer was never able to string more than two together. His best time span came in late June through early August when he scored back-to-back runner-up finishes at Sonoma Raceway and Daytona International Speedway, was interrupted by a 13th at Kentucky Speedway, scored another top-10 at New Hampshire, crashed out of the Brickyard 400 and then posted consecutive top-10s at Pocono and Watkins Glen.

Hidden in that streak were some predictable highlights, however, that raised his overall fantasy value. The seventh he scored at New Hampshire was part of a sweep of the top-10 on that short, flat track. He also swept the top 10 at Martinsville Speedway with a seventh in the spring and third in the fall, which suggests he should have been a good value on the 2.5-mile minimally-banked track of Indianapolis Motor Speedway if not for the accident. Had he survived that race intact, it is likely he would have recorded seven straight top-15s, which would have made him fantasy relevant like he was in the first 12 races of the season.

While Bowyer failed to string top-10s together, he nevertheless came out of the gates strong with 11 top-15s in the first 12 races. The only time he failed to finish that well was when he crashed out of the season-opening Daytona 500. That raised expectations that were mostly dashed in the closing races; it seemed that the majority of resources went to teammates Kevin Harvick and Kurt Busch with their playoff efforts and Bowyer was a forgotten man.

The short, flat tracks behave similarly to road courses, which was another venue where he excelled. On the twisty tracks, he swept the top five and that made him a particularly good value because he is not one of the drivers one generally associates with that course type.

While he did not run particularly well at Richmond International Raceway, Bowyer has won on that track in the past. The short, flat tracks and road courses give fantasy players almost a dozen races where he can be allocated in 2018 and that makes him a good value in both salary cap and pick ‘em games.
