DRAFT MLB Strategy: Tuesday

Tuesday, September 11, 2018

Building a team on DRAFT’s DFS platform is an excellent way to make the action even more exciting than just following your favorite team. If you aren’t familiar with DRAFT, it’s an innovative DFS game with a live draft feature -- instead of building within a salary cap, you're participating in snake drafts that typically last 2-5 minutes. On top of that, anyone you draft is yours alone -- if you take Jacob deGrom with your first pick, nobody else in your league can have him.

You can find more information at Draft.com or quickly join a contest from anywhere after downloading the app!

The scoring system is similar to FanDuel with a few small exceptions. For one, starting pitchers aren’t quite as valuable relative to their hitting counterparts. You can read a detailed explanation of these along with other DRAFT MLB Strategy Tips in our preview article.

Best of luck and happy drafting!

Editor's Note: Compete in a live fantasy baseball snake draft right now! Drafts take as little as 2 minutes to complete and last just one night. UNDERRATED PLAYERS

These players have a great chance to outperform their DRAFT projection.

Rhys Hoskins – OF – Philadelphia (DRAFT Projection: 0.0)

There’s a chance DRAFT could change this projection at some point during the day, which is a thing they sometimes do. However, as of Tuesday morning, Hoskins is buried with a 0.0 FP projection despite smacking a round-tripper in three straight games. Take note that Philadelphia and Washington are playing a double-header, and this matchup looks towards the 7:05 ET tilt vs Tanner Roark. Hoskins has solid numbers against the Nationals’ righty, and there’s a good chance he will continue his tear.

Jose Quintana – P – Chicago Cubs (DRAFT Projection: 9.5)

Quintana is better than he’s given credit for on DRAFT. They have him ranked 12th among starting pitchers, where I have boosted him to sixth in my personal rankings. I certainly believe he’s viable in the later rounds of drafts carrying six or more people, taking the bump against a Milwaukee team he pinned down for two earned runs, five strikeouts, and a win through 6.2 innings last week.

Steven Souza Jr. – OF – Arizona (DRAFT Projection: 8.7)

Colorado RHP Antonio Senzatela has gotten roughed-up by allowing 10 earned runs through 9.1 innings over his last two home starts. That creates an excellent opportunity for Diamondback hitters to take full advantage of the “Coors Effect” in Denver. Souza is a power hitter who is underrated within that, as his projection should at least be a full fantasy point higher.

OVERRATED PLAYERS

These players may not live up to their DRAFT projection.

Marco Gonzales – P – Seattle (DRAFT Projection: 11.0)

The matchup is good vs San Diego, but I can’t trust Marco Gonzales at the moment. He hasn’t pitched since August 22, nursing a neck injury in the meantime. Gonzales was in rough shape leading up to that, allowing 19 earned runs through 13 innings in his past three starts. DRAFT has him ranked fourth among pitchers, but I’m completely removing him from consideration. We aren’t sure how many innings Gonzales will last while coming off injury – or even if he can avoid getting shelled for the fourth straight time.

Joe Musgrove – P – Pittsburgh (DRAFT Projection: 10.2)

Musgrove has virtually the same projection as Chris Sale. That shouldn’t be the case. The Pirates’ righty has been decent this season, but I really don’t like the matchup at St. Louis tonight. In fact, Musgrove faced the Cardinals on the road a few weeks ago, allowing five earned runs through six innings. I wouldn’t be surprised if a similar performance came out of tonight. I’m removing Musgrove from consideration through all league sizes, as there are much better pitching options to replace him with.

Andrew Benintendi – OF – Boston (DRAFT Projection: 10.1)

I’m not a huge fan of the lefty/lefty matchup for Benintendi. He’ll step in against Toronto southpaw Ryan Borucki, which is enough to cause a marginal downgrade in my opinion. DRAFT has him ranked as the fourth best infielder of the day, but I’d rather take lower projected guys like Blackmon, Hicks, Pollock, Hoskins, and Renfroe ahead of him.

OVERALL STRATEGY

Pitcher rankings. Most of the movers and shakers at pitcher were highlighted in the write-ups above. Brad Keller and Tyler Glasnow received marginal downgrades while Quintana, Fiers, and Suarez are elevated into consideration for deeper leagues ... Chris Sale gets a substantial downgrade, as he's only expected to throw around 40 pitches tonight - so keep that in mind.

  1. Jacob deGrom – Tier 1
  2. Michael Fotlynewicz – Tier 2
  3. Shane Bieber – Tier 2
  4. Mike Fiers – Tier 2
  5. Jose Quintana – Tier 2
  6. Zack Greinke – Tier 3
  7. Miles Mikolas – Tier 3
  8. Andrew Suarez – Tier 3
  9. Jhoulys Chacin – Tier 3
  10. Brad Keller - Tier 3
