The Roundup: Snedeker controls

Saturday, October 6, 2018

Recap of the day

Early Movers: Bill Haas posted a 5-under-par 67 to leap 20 spots on the leaderboard and post a target of 11-under 205. Sam Ryder made the same number to jump over 30 places and end the day 10-under.

Leaders: Sungjae Im made a 69 to better Haas on 12-under. Kevin Tway soon topped that with his 68 for 13-under, but none could catch Brandt Snedeker's 69 for 16-under 200. Phil Mickelson's sombre words about his true form came true and he posted a 2-over 74.

Low round of the day: Bill Haas and Sam Ryder's 67

Updated betting: Snedeker 8/15, Tway 5/1, Im 10/1, Haas 16/1, Baddeley 33/1

Sunday weather forecast

More of the same in the Napa Valley: sunshine, clear skies, low 70s, little chance of rain, but watch out for the breeze. Nothing too tricky, but at 20mph more of a challenge. More importantly, there is a Red Flag Warning out (fire alert).

Leaders after at 54 holes

Brandt Snedeker (69, 200) - Only 7 of 14 fairways and 12 of 18 greens in regulation, but a solid lap of consolidation that ended with three straight birdies to provide an overnight buffer.

Kevin Tway (68, 203) - Holed three birdie putts in the 6- to 13-feet range and found the cup from sand for another par breaker on the eighth.

Sungjae Im (69, 204) - 3-under-par through ten he then dropped two quick shots, but fought hard and ticked 15 and 18 to get close to the leader.

Fate of the Favourites

Patrick Cantlay (73, 210) - He never really got to grips with the week and it finally showed up in his score on Saturday. Half the fairways and only 10 of 18 greens in regulation.

Emiliano Grillo (73, 211) - Another day when the long game went missing (10 of 18 greens in regulation). Without that he struggles.

Joaquin Niemann (75, 216) - Relentlessly found only half the fairways all week and -3.350 for SG: Putting.

Road to victory at Silverado Resort

2017 Brendan Steele – R1: 1st, R2: 2nd, R3: 3rd
2016 Brendan Steele – R1: 9th, R2: 16th, R3: 6th
2015 Emiliano Grillo – R1: 13th, R2: 19th, R3: 4th
2014 Sang-Moon Bae – R1: 1st, R2: 2nd, R3: 1st

Notes: All four winners inside the top six at this point and the most strokes any of them made up was four.

Fate of the 54-hole leaders at Silveradio Resort - where did they finish?

2017: Tyler Duncan - 5th
2016: Patton Kizzire - 2nd
2015: Brendan Steele - 17th
2014: Sang Moon Bae - 1st

Notes: When this course hosted the Champions Tour it was a very strong tournament for leaders ahead of the final round. Five of the last six converted the victory.

Focus on - Sam Ryder

Nearly two months off the course for the 28-year-old but he ended the 2018 season nicely and with the sense of there being more to come. The first hint was when in the mix during the first 36 holes at the Quicken National. Soon he made a brace of top tens at the John Deere Classic (T2) and Barbasol Championship (T7). He also smashed a second round 64 at the Wyndham Championship. T5 heading into the final round he can now use that little momentum to kick off 2019 in style.

Focus on - Maverick McNealy

The 22-year-old prompted plenty of hullabaloo when he turned professional, but it's not quite happened for him. He still lacks even one top 25 finish on the PGA Tour after 14 starts and he went 2-for-7 at the end of the Web.com season with a best of T46. He made the cut this week and currently lies T35 - that first half-decent PGA Tour finish is in his sights.

Focus on - Brandt Snedeker with a 54 hole lead

He is 4-for-10 on the PGA Tour, and 2-for-2 elsewhere (Web.com and the Fiji International). Perhaps more importantly, when he has a solo third round lead he is 4-for-6.
